Thanks for Crossroads for helping me set up this interview. I met Anje at her cafe in Toucheng and got a chance to hear her story. She's been in Taiwan for around 20 years, and has had a colorful career working in film, and running trading companies, restaurants, and a KZfaq channel. After a diplomatic dispute in 2018, Anje realized that according to the law she could be deported from Taiwan for saying the wrong thing, or for any other reason the government saw fit. Since she considered Taiwan her home at that point, she gave up her South African passport and became Taiwanese. The process took her over 800 days, but after passing a tough language and culture test, she finally became an official citizen of Taiwan. Now Anje wants to get involved in politics at the local level to help her city attract international tourists and connect to people abroad.
