THANK YOU for this video!! I have been trying to figure out WHERE on Euclid the Arena was!!! As a child in the 1950s my parents always took me there for my March birthday when the Ice Capades (or Follies, can't remember which one came in March) came to town each year. I have so many fond memories there. We saw a few hockey games to at that time. Then in 1964 the Arena hosted a "Beatle Booster Ball" which was for all us Beatle fans (I was 17 then) emceed by Tom Clay of CKLW radio from Windsor/Ontario/Detroit area. CKLW came in very strong in Cleveland and Tom Clay was a very popular DJ here, then. It was a fun day of Beatles music and dancing. Me and my friends attended it. After graduating from Kent State in '69, I moved to Detroit and lived in several other cities until I came back home to Cleveland in 1998. SO the arena had disappeared before I came back, since I was only a child and a teen the last time I was in the arena, I really couldn't remember WHERE it was located!! THANK AGAIN, GREAT VIDEO!! As a lover of old ballparks and arenas, I very much enjoyed this video. I’m from New York City. I’ve never been to Cleveland. But while traveling across Ohio in 1977, I stopped to see the Richfield Coliseum, from the roadside. I was amazed that a sports arena would be built in the middle of nowhere. You neglected to mention the NHL’s Cleveland Barons played at the Coliseum for two years, ‘76-‘77 and ‘77-‘78. They had been the California Golden Seals, and moved to Ohio from Oakland, taking the nickname of the old Cleveland minor hockey league team. Their attendance was dreadful. After the second season, the owners merged the Barons with the old Minnesota North Stars. Great video!

Great video, it brought back many memories. I was lucky enough to see several Indians and Browns games at Municipal Stadium. I forgot about the "catwalks" in Muni stadium but as soon as I saw them, the memories came back. I never saw the Cav's in Richfield but saw several concerts there. I've attended many Browns, Indians and Cav's games in their new venues and they all are great places.

Nice job on the video. I ushered for the Browns and Indians for 18 years at the old Municipal Stadium and Jacobs Field. I was at every game of The Miracle of Richfield except for the final game against Washington because my brother was getting married in Falls Church, Virginia just outside of D.C. and the priest was a Bullets fan. That final game was the same night as the rehearsal dinner, so we gave the priest a little grief, LOL! Also remember a lot of Cleveland Crusader games at the Coliseum, and lamentably the only two years of the NHL Barons before they merged them with the North Stars. Saw many AHL Barons games at the Cleveland Arena, and I even got to play a 10 minute exhibition game at halftime of a Cavs preseason game as a member of a team that radio DJ Jim Runyon put together to face a squad that Plain Dealer TV/Radio critic Bill Hickey assembled which included Browns legend Dick Schafrath, and Bevo Francis, who once scored over 100 points in a college basketball game. However, Runyon was able to secure the talents of former major league pitcher and Cleveland State baseball coach Garry Roggenburk, who also had been a high school basketball star at St. Ignatius, and we, Runyon's Rebounders, came out victorious vs. Hickey's Hot Shots.😊

Moved to Columbus from Texas in '92. So happy I got to see a couple games and the "final play" at the old Municipal Stadium and saw Peter Gabriel in Richfield. I thought, "These are real rock fans!" compared to what I grew up with in KC and Dallas. Great memories and video!

Great video and music choices too. I still remember as a kid, going to the old municiple stadium for indians and Browns games. The food was so good, atmosphere back in those days was so amazing compared to today where there is really no connection, lost feelings of the past. To see people make videos and still keep memories alive is a blessing! I remember going to Browns winning playoff game against Patriots in Municiple Stadium with my dad. Many beautiful summer nights with Indians playing in the old stadium. Then going to Richfield Coliseum watching the Cavs play, great moments. one thing I will always remember, not just the games I attended in those stadiums, but the architect, the style, it had the old school vibes, feelings, man I miss those days. #NeverForget

This is one of the best videos I have seen in quite awhile. My father seen Babe Ruth play in League Park. He took me to see the great Jim Brown play in his last year in Municipal Stadium. I also seen many great Cavs games at the Coliseum along with many great concerts like Skinner, and Frampton, Yes, Bad Company and many more. I can't tell you how many Indians games I seen along with the Beach Boys, Pink Floyd and many more there. Ya, I am old. LOL, great memories of all of this tho. I feel lucky after watching this, thanks.

I love this video. I'm a life long Detroit resident but have spent much of my adult life going to Cleveland cause my in-laws live there. I absolutely love this city and I'm excited everytime we visit family which is a lot cause it's only 2 and a half hour drive. When I come here we always go to sporting events and I love the venues and the teams. So watching this video and learning the history of former venues and the history.

Awesome job! I grew up here in the CLE - in my 50's now and this video brought back many wonderful memories. I'll never forget spreading out during an Indians win, top of the ninth, everyone would grab the seat on either side and bag the metal on metal seats. It sounded like a train going through. Great video. Seeing the Barrons hockey games at the Arena brought back memories.

The thing that I like about the new Browns stadium is that it is on the same site as old muni. While walking there, we walk past the same buildings and lots that we walked by decades ago with our families. The street vendors and ticket scalpers are in the same locations that they were when I was a kid.

The back corner entrance to the Coliseum was eventually used as an additional entrance. It was what we used coming from downtown because it was the easiest to access from I-77

Awesome video. I went to a Cavs game in 1970 when I was 9 years old. That old Cleveland Arena was a dark place. It's amazing how they completely removed any trace of that Richfield arena. Those demo guys were very thorough.

Thank you for putting this video together. Great memories of Rock Concerts @ Cleveland Arena. Going to Municipal Stadium to watch the Indians and Browns. Cleveland did a wonderful job of building a Football and Baseball Stadium, plus a Sports Arena to replace what was lost.

Went to many concerts at Coliseum. That was the place! Also worked with a company that rented the construction trailers and portable toilets that we called "red heads" to the builders. I was 18 years old and that was my first "real" job. Thanks for the memories. Great video.

Great video! The Old League Park site is neat. I have been to it and you can actually go out and stand on the field. Saw many Indians games at Muni. Caught a foul ball from Steve Lyons during a double header on a Sunday afternoon with my dad. I only went to Richfield a few times, what I remember of it, it was a nice arena. Like you said, in todays world, it wouldn't have made it unless they built up the area around it. Great job!

Back in the 1950's, radio station WERE in Cleveland, the Indians, and a tire company went in together and formed the Cleveland Indian's Knothole Club for the kids. The reason for "knothole" was the kids could go to the stadium and peek through the knotholes in the outfield fence. I still have my membership badges. They let kids in for free to see the home DAY games. Thanks for the memories. Jon

Great video, Thank you, I grew up less than 8 miles east of the coliseum in Hudson. As a teenager I remember when the property was chosen because at the time people were no longer going downtown and there was a real need for a multi venue complex to attract people from all walks of life over a vast area connected by an interstate system. At the time it was the answer to a weak economy and a way to draw people to this great area of northeast ohio. The concerts were great, The Coliseum was a regular concert venue for us growing up, with its first event being a concert by Frank Sinatra and the last being a concert by Roger Daltrey in 1994, which was also the last official event at the arena. The first rock concert at the Richfield Coliseum was Stevie Wonder in October 1974. The Boss was there every year for new years and it was for years the place to go with friends There was a complete running track ,exercise area around the upper mersilene. Unfortunately the developers underestimated the cost to upkeep the complex and it fell into disrepair at the same time people began going back down to the flats.It was great to see this video as I also remember going downtown to watch the Harlem Globetrotters and Big Time Wrestling with my grandfather as a boy. I am in my sixties now and miss this part of Ohio. I think maybe I will go back !!!!. THANKS AGAIN !!!

From North Royalton, OH originally living in Lexington, KY now. There was a place we ran at a handful of times in college called Kendall Lake (and the Kendall Ledges) and my college coach could see The Coliseum from the ledges. I drive by that open field (Located on OH-303/Streetsboro Road in Peninsula) on my run to Lock 29 whenever I run back home. Love that place.

great video! summer of 1980or 1981 saw bruce springsteen and the e st band with the michael stanley band. there was 6 of us, dropped off by one of my friends dad in his 1977 ford LTD country squire. told us all to meet him at that triangle mound. we waited for awhile due to him getting stuck in traffic but it was a beautiful night and so many other people there waiting. burning butts and re singing the boss' songs lol. still got the concert tshirt!! good times man... never realized they tore down richfield coliseum. i'm glad that is still untouched and the land is nice. man, if that was here in the boston area, that would have a stupid mini city with over priced townhouses on it. i miss ohio. excellent video!! thanks for posting.

Thanks, lots of memories between the Coliseum and Municipal Stadium (I'm 43 so the Arena was before my time as well) There really needs to be a plaque on Euclid in front of the Red Cross with a commemoration of the Cleveland Arena. On March 21st, 1952 it was the site of the first Moondog Coronation Ball hosted by WHK DJ Alan Freed, regarded as the first ever rock n roll concert. Also, Elvis Presley played there in 1956. So it does have some historical significance. The Cavs were never very good until the 1976 season at the Coliseum. Other minor league basketball teams existed at the Arena going back to the 1950s, and the IHL Barrons were briefly popular locally, but no other sports team that played there were major league NHL or NBA, so there was little other national historical significance other than the concerts. There should be a plaque on 303 as well. At 20:10 you talk about all the trees and woods behind where the Coliseum used to be - Larry Nance and Brad Daugherty of the Cavs used to go hunting back there after practice! Also, I'm surprised you did not mention/show the center court from the Arena when you showed the Coliseum center court. It's hanging there in the Fieldhouse as well. I know Jim Chones (power forward/center for the Cavs 1973-78 now radio color analyst for the team) said many times on the radio how warped the floorboards were in the old Arena, and how a lot of the nails were protruding making it an awful court to play on his rookie year - if you look close at it you can see exactly what he's talking about! As I understand it, the 50 yard line now in First Energy Stadium is roughly 20 yards west of the 50 yard line in Municipal Stadium. Muni was a horrible baseball stadium but perfect for Browns football.

I have many fond memories of Municipal Stadium. My dad took us to many Indians games there. The seating capacity was way too large for baseball, but as kids we loved it. It seemed a magical place. The only thing I remember about the Cleveland Arena was that it was old and sad looking. I have NO nostalgia about the Richfield Coliseum. The building itself was fine, and I saw some great concerts there, but I always got miserably stuck in traffic on Rt. 303!

Excellent video... Great history...I remember being backed up leaving the Coliseum....it was a fantastic facility. I played a preliminary game at the Arena prior to a Cincinnati Royals - Baltimore Bullets game. Lorain County Community College vs Cuyahoga County Community College basketball teams. Loved and hated Municipal Stadium but it my stadium growing up..Great memories

I remember the Richfield Colusiem well. Went to the miracle of 76. Took my son to the Circus there. My only regret was not going to a Elvis concert when he was there not to long before his death. When they tore it down it took Richfield back off the map.

I miss the Coliseum, it was the best concert venue!

I used to drive past the old Stadium every day on my way to and from work. One day it was on fire after the Browns moved to Baltimore.

In addition to the Indians, League Park was also an NFL venue. The Cleveland Rams played there from 1936-45. They were NFL champs in 1945, their last season before relocating to Los Angeles. And the Browns used it as their main practice field into at least the late 1960's

Fascinating history, although a bit long winded on the Coliseum subject. Only went to music shows there, never sports. We used to cut school to go to opening day of baseball. I think seats were like $2??? Moved to Florida end of 2000, so a bit out of touch with some of this, but either way excellent video and thanks for sharing. JT

At the time League Park was built, E 55th was the city limit, so the park was built at the end of the streetcar line to drive traffic on weekends. The neighborhood was originally filled with commercial buildings like the ramshackle structure across the street, but most were burned down during race riots in the 60's, and then in the 70's and 80's they tried to build a bunch of suburban style houses there so it never regained its density... Oddly enough I grew up about in the suburbs a couple miles from the Coliseum and even though it was the middle of nowhere, it was very much like Ebbits field for me as a kid, On game days you'd have traffic backed up on the freeway and all the local streets and there'd be searchlights in sky.

First motocross race watched there.I worked on the Komatsu PC 750 used to dig out all the foundations and assembled it on site and disassembled it .Gave my family and friends bricks from the original dawg pound and seats. INDEPEDENCE EXCAVATING DID THE WORK.

I remember about 25 years ago, bringing my son to League park, it wasn't as nice as it is now, there were crackheads everywhere, and there was just one part of the seating foundation left there.

The Coliseum was a much nicer facility than the Gund Arena. I went there several times. Never go to the Gund anymore . Too dangerous to venture into downtown Cleveland....
