He says Brexit is like "trying to get an egg out of an omelette" and a "stupid mistake". Our guest Pascal Lamy knows the issues involved better than most - he served as chief-of-staff to EU Commission President Jacques Delors, and was at the eye of the Eurosceptic storm as Britain’s The Sun newspaper published its notorious "Up Yours Delors" front page in 1990. More recently he served as Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Pascal Lamy tells FRANCE 24 what he makes of the UK’s departure from the EU; what kind of trade deal could be possible; and what it would mean for the UK to have a "no deal Brexit" and fall back on WTO rules. We also discuss the impact of Germany’s political uncertainty on Europe, and ask why France is bidding to host the 2025 World Expo.

Boris never believed in Brexit - he was positioning himself for a future career. Now hes is on damage limitation mode; to quote Alister Campbell, on Brexit day he looked as if his dog had been run over. "You only needed to blow the bloody doors off..."

It IS like getting an egg out of an omelette. However, we should just take our slice of the omelette away, then go and make our own with many many more Global eggs. And its not FREE TRADE, Its EU tariffs, set by the EU, to benefit the EU and at great cost to the UK consumer.

The idea of an economic union was a fantastic idea, it's just a shame it came with crazy conditions for political union too. Incredibly poor number of free trade deals mainly due to the protectionism of the internal market really hasn't helped sell the EU ideology right across Europe, hense it's ever decreasing share on the worlds economic stage.

+Torian Tammas Yes - note the word 'Market' - that's what we signed up to in 1973: a Common Market where countries in Europe could trade without tariffs with each other. Neither we, nor Thatcher, signed up to increasing political union, and Major completed his betrayal of her and this country with his signature on the Maastricht Treaty in 1992.

What’s the point of hearing this man? Brexit is a mistake he says, where in fact it’s the best thing for UK.

one of the complaints of brexiters is that the common man is left out of the growing economic wealth of uk, globalization and elite and so on. well, lemy explains it on 14:06. he says the brits have the idea that eu is punishing the uk...he said the view of eu on brexit was a 'mistake' and that eu does not, is not punishing uk and, in fact, it is the opposite because the well being of uk helps eu...regardless, how is it best for uk to leave?

From the beginning I found myself disagreeing with Lamy , take the USA/Canada trade regime , it does not require a political union ,take Russia and EU trade , again a political union is not needed , take South Africa(where I am from)trading with the africa , or Europe , or anywhere , a political union is not needed. Also since when did trade imply imposing border conditions and immigration policy , imagine if the EU did that to China or the USA Lamy is a case of paralysis by analysis and arugment by analogy , cant separate the egg from the omelette catch phrases , thankfully he no longer works for the WTO , but the newscast does not name his successor , it cant be Christine La Garde because she is busy messing up the IMF , having just clobbered Greece . The EU wants to entrap countries , and fears other countries might leave the EU , so it needs an army to stop them , not just a EU arrest warrant .

Mister Furious - He used the omelette as an example to show how hard it is to untangle the UK from the EU single market. He could have talked about integrated supply lines and what all comes with it, but this is not as catchy as a metaphor. Some a metaphor is when someone says you are a fox. He does not mean you have a bushy tail.

This person is so out of touch with the people. Just because Wall St. is well of and making money does not mean that the people are well off. Just because the city of London is making money does not mean the British are well off. He just has a banker and business mentality and is completely out of touch with the people.

So the UK is out of touch for not taking more migrants that is what was going to happen if they remain in the EU. Then I guess all Eastern European states are also out of touch since they don't want to take migrants. If people from the rest of Europe, Africa and the Middle East has not migrated to the UK in such big numbers to the point of affecting salaries and the NHS they probably the UK would have remained in the EU Einstein.

talk2me9ja: First, endless wars and amassed debt is not what is hurting America silly. Look at Japan and also the amount of debt the US ad after WW2 was double their GDP, now they have their GDP in debt. As for the American people don't have a say, silly. Look how they elected Trump over Hillary (that was the status quo politician, the one that was pro-Oligarchy). One more thing yo no soy Americano. Asi que deja de inferir cosas que no son por que suenas como que no sabes nada.

precisionpoint Did you even watch the video? He said that even though Germany has a strong economy the people don't feel it, cause they don't benefit enough from it. "Without Migration ... NHS....wouldn't have happened" And you talk about people being out of touché? Most immigration in the UK is non EU immigration and therefore has 0 to do with the EU. EU immigrants on the other hand pay more into the system than UK nationals. (According to anti immigration watch groups) 10% of NHS doctors are from the EU and as Brits in the EU are often retires, who need more care and medicine attention, while EU citizens living in the UK are mostly healthy working people (who need less care than retirees), the NHS actually benefits from EU migration, but the UK government prefers not to fund the NHS properly, but prefers to bomb brown people (which caused the refugee crisis and more terrorism)

What no facts . Here are some The 50% trade the UK has with EU is %8 of its GDP and costs the UK £80 billion deficit. The other 50% makes £40 billion Surplus . French and Germans two World Wars and now want a Army !

are you saying you import more than you export? if this is the case, what do you want to export to make up the deficit? what do you produce that eu need? that 8 percent is from the whole of eu which is much, much larger than uk, you can look it up. it might surprise you that the 8 billion annual fee for trading, of that 7 billion is pumped back into uk economy
