I got some F1 new Turbo era parts! Here i show an intercooler and wastegate from Ferrari engine that was used in Marrusia/Manor.
Dissasamble of intercooler. It have 16000 tubes in it!
These parts are used in 2014 season.
Edit: It is a: Mezzo's microtube coolant-air intercoolers mezzotech.com/performance-appl...
I am not an expert on these parts so if you know anything about this please comment so i can learn more!

Hi Peter. I believe me or not but I used to work for Marussia before it when tits up first time at the end of 2014. I have a little knowledge about some of the parts you have although I used to work in the aero side of things. For instance I believe that the waste gate is made from Ti and if you it looks like you've got an exhaust there too. Unbelievable that the collector between the wastegate and the turbo pipe was machined from billet Ti! The charge cooler is cool hey, it was fed from a air to water cooler that was fed and positioned just behind the roll hoop on the 14 marussia car. If you have any question, I can try and answer.

Really interesting to see how rough these parts are. Resin globs on the carbon fiber exterior and a really fast surface finish on the aluminum. Serial number on the aluminum looks like it might have been done by hand. F1 seems so polished and professional from the outside - it is interesting for me to see the imperfections and human elements.

Raw vacuum bag finish on the CF parts. Your normal carbon fiber hood or similar will have the finished outer surface made against the tool (mold for the part), and take the surface finish of the tool. A clear coat (or gel coat in fiberglass boats) is applied to the tool for an even better finish. On this the 'finished' surface is on the inside for smooth airflow, and the vacuum bag surface is the outside.

@alexhaws2377
@alexhaws2377 7 жыл бұрын
Those are generally called "charge coolers" rather than intercoolers but technically it's a "laminar flow air-to-water heat exchanger". Surface finish on the carbon is due to that being the layup side and also due to that side not needing to be smooth for any purpose other than aesthetics...so it's not (to save weight). Nice to see one torn down! Still surprises me that they use wastegates at all as the whole point of the MGU-H was to harvest energy from the turbo when producing more boost than required. Material is probably inconel or titanium.

The texture on the outside of the carbon parts is caused by the vacuum bags used in the molding process. The mold would be on the inside keeping it smooth but since the outside didn't matter they didn't make a mold side for it.

It's a normal water to air intecooler. minis tubes are used to maximise the surface area of heat exchange. you have more surface of material with numerous little tubes than bigger fins. moreover it allows more homogeneous exchange. Ethylene glycol is not allowed on tracks,so it's certainly just water,or water with sodium,or something enhancing heat exchange.

Just a small correction @6:40 If the air encounters a narrower diameter, it will actually increase in velocity but decrease in pressure. So I think the aim there is to have more air flow faster and leave a lower pressure "behind", for more air to flow through...just my two cents. :)

That intercooler is SUPER efficient. It should capable of cooling your lambo. Fi cars are pretty much full throttle always. That thing has huge heat removing capabilities. Plus how much water you run affects thermal mass alot. An 800 hp intercooler and a 800 hp wide open for entire race intercooler is a different animal. Beautiful unbelievable Swiss watch of intercoolers.

That wastegate is so much more free flowing than a right angle poppet valve overcoming fixed spring pressure. I would absolutely use the wastegate but it's not designed to sit in traffic. It's durability is probably quite limited. The same with the intercooler, you will need to run a high volume dual filtration system and possibly a marine anode to limit any corrosion.

I believe they use distilled water for the intercooler because its transfer heat faster than a coolant or antifreeze and thats why it has mixed with the aluminium residue resulting a sediment at the bottom part.thats why we can see the residue clearly because if using coolant they will put some color in a coolant if they using it to distinguish it from other liquid if something is leaking, i think the intercooler didn't share the water/coolant with the engine cooling system, btw nice video, this kind of things really amuse me because i love to learn something new about car technology and this kind of parts are rarely seen like u said its was a secret thing, i think i wont see any of this if you didnt show it in the video, cheers mate

Exclusive content ... Thank You! By "hydraulic" do you mean oil pressure? Pressure rises dramatically under load and drops on deceleration, so it could work ... maybe. If the five wires are actively controlling valving that could dial the system in. Maybe it's a independent hyd system all together. Would love to learn more about this stuff. Wouldn't it be fun pressing the 1600+ tubes into the intercoolers, assuming you only had a few hundred to make... not!
