You totally have to visit the Austrian GP. On TV, you cannot really experience how breathtaking the course is and how much altitude differences there are (especially when looking at the straight between turn 1 - nowadays Lauda - and turn 2 - nowadays Remus). It's like they are climbing a small mountain.

The track in Argentina is named Oscar and Juan Galvez and regularly hosts local categories such as TC2000, Turismo Carretera and Turismo Nacional. There are plans to bring it back into shape to bring back formula 1

apparently, they are thinking about using the loop, that goes around the lake in the area. With some sort of chicane to slow the cars down.

That brazilian track with a long Portuguese name was actually known simply as Jacarepaguá, which is the name of the neighborhood where it was located. "Jacarepaguá" is a tupi (one of the main native brazilian languages) word and it sounds quite odd even to brazilians.

Kyalami is very much up and running now. It's one of my favourite tracks. They've redesigned it slightly, made a couple sections wider, made the first section faster and taken out the penultimate chicane/corner. It's still got the amazing views from the hairpin at the top of the hill.

Fun fact about Nivelles, when it was abandoned, the local youths used the deteriorating track for illegal street racing in the 80s and 90s. It's now a mixed estate for industry and leisure, with the main straight being broken up by a roundabout (you can still see where the exit from the final hairpin is when driving down the roundabout). A good resource for many abandoned European tracks is Circuits of the Past, here's the article for Nivelles-Baulers: www.circuitsofthepast.com/lap-nivelles-circuit/

Alex, a Brazilian here to help you. Interlagos was the 1st place to held the F1, then it went to Rio. The ractrack was best known as "Jacarépagua" (DJa-ka-RÉH-pa-gua), was one of the best racetracks in Brazil and was demolished (sadly). Now a days many tracks are in rick of being destroyed , like Interlagos and Curitibas's International Track

Really enjoying a lot of these videos! Being from Canada I loved your videos from last year's Canadian GP, I haven't been. Anyways I have a track for a "lost tracks" video. I live fairly close to a to a circuit here formerly called "Mosport" home of the first Canadian GP back in the 60's, and continued through the 70's. It's still a very active track hosting some Nascar series, IMSA and Perelli World Challenge.

Estoril track is not abandoned, every weekend they made track days for people and they have motor racing series and gp3 etc ... Portugal has one project to put the new Portimão track on the f1 calendar but they need 800 milion euros investement ... So it is almost impossible that to happen.

Igor Vieira Estoril is pretty much "abandoned" they don't even have International events of note. All the infrastructures are lacking maintenance, the track Hotel is abandoned, all the surroundings as well... Now they only host track days, portuguese series, and/or minor motor events. They are rented for some teams training as well... It's a shame to see such an iconic track as it is... (And all of this i know, i raced there last year for the portuguese Drift Championship) Cheers

If you are doing lost f1 tracks a huge one to put on the list would be Watkins Glen. Used to run F1 there until 1980, and to this day it still holds NASCAR Cup and Xfinity races, IMSA sanctioned 6 Hours of The Glen, and several other small events.

Just a word on Kyalami. The track is open for international competition and on 23 November it will host the final round of the 2019 Intercontinental GT Challenge series with the Kyalami 9 Hours (the other races in the series are the Bathurst 12 Hour, California 8 Hours [Laguna Seca], Spa 24 Hours and Suzuka 10 Hours). The GT series is open to GT3 and GT4 cars. Lost Formula One tracks would be a good video as there are many that still hold major racing, just not F1. Tracks like Adelaide, Brands Hatch, Donington, Zolder, Dijon, Le Mans (Bugatti), Istanbul, Fuji, Sebring, Indianapolis, Watkins Glen, Magny Cours, Jarama, Long Beach, Jerez, Mosport, Sepang and Imola immediately spring to mind.

The abandonment of the Milwaukee Mile is quite sad for me living so close to it even though it is not F1 and an oval. There was a lot of history including Jim Clark’s first win in the USAC at Milwaukee in his rear engined Lotus bringing the revolution to the U.S.

sorta surprised no US tracks mentioned. since the early years, there were 10 different tracks used here in the US. the more recent and known tracks include Riverside, now a housing development. It also saw the final race of the year for NASCAR for years. The others are Long Beach (street), Detroit (street), Dallas (street), Phoenix (street), Seabring, Watkins Glen, Indy Oval (Indianapolis 500) and Indy road course.
@Starfire_Storm
@Starfire_Storm 6 жыл бұрын
I mean, Street Circuits don't really count since they're used all the time by normal traffic, unless you're Valencia. Besides the only tracks that don't see any racing are Dallas and Phoenix, Long Beach is used in IndyCar and IMSA, Detroit is used in IndyCar, Sebring is used in IMSA and WEC (next year), Watkins Glen is used in IMSA and NASCAR with IndyCar going sometimes and both Indianapolis tracks are used in IndyCar with NASCAR using the oval. So yeah, they don't fit in this series, maybe in the future series.
@REBELsst
@REBELsst 6 жыл бұрын
Long beach is a different layout from Indy car. Riverside is gone, like i said. As far as i can remember, the F1 layout at Indy was only used by F1. Indy car and motorcycles used different layouts. Sebring was using the old layout back when F1 ran there. there is some history at those tracks.
@Starfire_Storm
@Starfire_Storm 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, both Long Beach and Indy were different, Long Beach changed for numerous reasons and Indy is just a little bit different, turns 5,6,7 are gone and is only a chicane going to the straight in the IndyCar race and the last corner (banking) is not present, they use a set of three corners that go infield that avoid the banking, the Motorcycle layout is basically the same excpet it goes the other way around and it goes infield to avoid the banking and Sebring, although changed, it's still there, and everything that was used in the old layout it's still in use, it's not abandoned

got another obscure one. came across it by accident actually. Ontario Speedway in California. It was an actual 1:1 copy of Indy. the short shoots between the turns were banked and the track was one lane wider than Indy, making it much faster. It also had a road course. It was also the first track to have electronic scoring. they even got a bunch of bricks from Indy to pave victory circle! It hosted the 1971 Questor Grand Prix, a non-point event. there was supposed to be a points race in 1972, but they track didn't make enough money. it is now a shopping center, condos, a hotel and Citizens Business Bank Arena.

Nivelles-Baulers, first it was too safe, then it became too dangerous: " Designed by Roger Caignie to be a safe alternative to Spa, Nivelles was perhaps too safe. It had massive runoff areas, was flat and featureless, and was described by many drivers as being bland and sterile. Nivelles was not popular amongst the paying spectators since they thought that they were not close enough to the action. The track ran into economic problems very early in its life. The organizer went bankrupt in 1974. They were however able to find enough sponsors to organise that year's Formula One race. In 1976 it was once again Nivelles's turn to organize the Belgian Grand Prix, but the track was not considered safe enough for Formula One because of the condition of the tarmac."

Regarding the Argentinean circuit here's some info. The circuit changed hands many time and in the early 2000's due to financial issues it lost almost all Argentinean local races. There wasn't any maintenance done and it still stands as it was when the 1998 GP was held there. About two years ago local government and private companies started a project to get it back in place. Some work was already done and they're expecting to take FIA grade 2 certification shortly. In order to get grade 1 and host a F1 race again there are some major modifications needed, Charlie Whiting visited the track not long ago. Still, the mayor limitation they're facing to bring the F1 GP back is the fee that needs to be payed (around 40 millions US). The new layout combines the old track (used until 1981) and the new track (used between 1995 and 1998). You can see the proposed track layout in this link: www.clarin.com/deportes/automovilismo/autodromo-buenos-aires-poder-recibir-formula_0_B1b0_Bu5b.html

Comment's 8 months too late but I just want to say that I live not far from Spielberg (AustrianGP) and the ,,westloop'' does still exist. It's used as a car park. During the F1, DTM and MotoGP weekends there is a fan area where the former ,,Hella Licht-S'' chicane was. There they built a (very slow) chicane again at the end of the run-off area of corner 1 at the red bull ring. The chicane goes in the different direction than the old one used to be (left-right-left). But you could possibly drive a lap at (nearly) the old layout...

Going down the old mine shaft corner at Kyalami took serious balls, dropping and turning, you essentially cant see where you are going at 280kph. Not sure the current track will work for F1 sadly, so they wont return.

I'm from Argentina and i can tell you why they stopped coming here: 1 As you said, money. The Argentine economy wasn't good back then and it isn't now. If they try to bring it back, it will be an unorganized disaster, i swear it. 2) The track was good in the 80's and shit in the 90's. Why, you might ask? The track configuration. Between 71 and 81( The 76' race didn't raced because we had a takeover of control by the militaries that lasted 8 years) the track was run on the n°6 configuration,which was pretty good and liked by many drivers,but during the 4 years that F1 came back (95 to 98, with financial problems eliminating the 99' race with the season already started, leaving a 5 weeks gap between the 1st race and the 3rd) was run on the n°15 configuration. This last one made overtaking nearly impossible if it wasn't on the backstraighway. And if they try to bring it back, with how wide are F1 cars today, it will be the same as the 90's. Good video!

Yeah, it would be a disaster, I mean, Mexico is basically the poorest country (if we say GDP per capita, not total GDP) and they can do a good organization, Argentina is in a worse state than Mexico, so it wouldn't be that good, but I think that they could pull it off, barely, but hey, they're still the 3rd largest economy in Latinamerica and the 5th in the entire Americas.

Starfire Storm Argentina is the N°1 Country with External Debt. If i'm not wrong, we are owing something closet up to 300 thousand million dollars. So, to resume it, our economy is fucked and so are we.
@Starfire_Storm
@Starfire_Storm 6 жыл бұрын
Juan Manuel Bonzano Damn, I didn't knew that, but, I don't think it's the biggest exteral debt, last time I checked México had an external debt of around 420 billion dollars (420 mil millones), that's 120 billion more that what Argentina has and we do just fine, not good, but not terribly either.

What about the three Portuguese tracks (Boavista, Monsanto, Estoril) or the Moroccan Ain-Diab Circuit which hosted only one World Championship GP in 1958? I think it would be a good idea to include them in part 3 (if it's ever going to be made).

Just checked some onboards of the old Kyalami track and it looks much more flowing than the current one. I understand it got dropped after the changes they made, I remember watching an A1 race round there and I think there literally wasn’t a single overtake

The revered Kyalami is no longer, it was hacked to bits and the current track is absolutely shit. The long straight is now Kyalami Boulevard, and passing on the new layout is virtually impossible.

Mate.. your section on Kyalami.. you've used an aerial view of Cape Town (table mountain is in the back ground), whereas Kyalami is in Johannesburg?? You may have confused Kyalami with Killarney race track in Cape Town... also, Kyalami is once again at FIA Grade 2 status with a lot of reprofiling of track sections having taken place, along with a brand new pit building. Lastly, Jean Todt recently visited and it has been mentioned that they simply need to invest in TecPro barriers to get it to Grade 1 status

TC and TC2000 are two really different and very popupar series here in Argentina, I don't think TC200 was supposed to be replacement. As for the track, is not up to international standards but it's completely functional but it holds races for both of those series, as well as plenty other national ones too. And supposedly there are plans to improve it in the near future...
