There is A LOT of complicated advice out there (including on this podcast) focused on how to improve our well-being. In this episode, ‪@RickHanson‬ and I simplify the lessons we’ve learned from over 100 experts and 300 episodes. We explore the importance of individual context, focusing on what we can change even among difficult circumstances, the power of acceptance, influencing our attention, taking care of the body, social connection, and how we can identify, accept, and manage our unique needs.
Key Topics:
0:00 Introduction, and a disclaimer about generalizations
5:40 The belief that things can get better
14:25 How acceptance supports agency
24:05 Being thoughtful about what we consume, and where we place our attention
30:30 Bodily awareness and taking care of the body
36:15 Developing and appreciating strong social connections
41:20 Identifying our wants and needs
44:15 Identifying key values, setting goals, and letting those goals shape our lives

I love this podcast. Thank you so much Forrest for highlighting which is so often missed about people's circumstances. Your comments about poverty - there is often so little recognition about how difficult it is to start to look at wellbeing in a wider sense when you don't enough to eat - never mind real food!

also, is your dad neurodivergent? I only ask because I am and I really see similarities in him that I experience within my own experience especially what he said about people being more relational and also those of us who have had to take time to learn. Just wondering, because he has that 'spark' idk how else to describe that I find always seems to exist in fellow neurodivergents (like this pure expressive nature )

'The expressing of warmheartedness in various authentic ways, protects & feeds us as it flows through'. This is true for me. Thank you for giving it words.

I really appreciated the wordsmithing (46:00) of "contentment" and accepting the moment "as is." Thank you. Your work is meaningful. From Maine USA.

SO painful to accept those things that are a reality I didn’t see. I hoped and hoped and hoped that eventually if I just kept the faith these people or situations would come around. True there is a child like quality in my hanging onto the idea I am able to be completely open and honest with others and that’s going to be met in a positive safe reciprocal manner.

"Letting go is an agentic act" about 29 minutes in. I do not know if I am hearing this correctly. Can you clarify? Great topic BTW!

Generally people think of expressing their agency by *changing* things. But deliberately accepting things as they are (i.e., letting go) is also a way feel a sense of agency.

Since this podcast is complex, some concrete examples of the 7 lessons would have added to the overall clarity and understanding of the discussion here.
