The answer is because it wasn't digital. The devs back then had to shove the entire game on a tiny limited CD. Today, most just don't bother to optimize.

I remember playing that spiderman game, it was one of the most fun games I played, the only problem I had with it was thet I got stuck on the Mysterio boss fight, it took me over a week to defeat him. Edit: I'm talking about the real boss fight not the 1 hit ko fight.

Def no game of the year, but my brother and I are both addicted to the combat and having a great time. We're not playing it just to try and pick out the flaws to trash it. We're playing to have fun and it hits that expectation great.

@@Pixiwish From what I gathered, if a game comes out and it's trash, it will be treated likewise. However, if an average game is marketed as one of the best games ever, when the game comes out and turns out to be just average, it's going to be treated like trash. Mass Effect Andromeda had the same problem.

@@Pixiwish But you're not overpowered, and you're not destroying shit. You literally just tap the right trigger while strafing, for way too long because even simple enemies take 5+ hits to kill. Sometimes you press the parkour button, that's it. There's no environmental destruction. None of the enemies can even hit you on the hardest difficulty if you just strafe and sometimes parkour. It's hot trash, and if you like this type of game, you are part of the problem with the game industry. A game that costs 80 euro should be fun to play for its full runtime, not for half an hour and then the rest be boring as shit. Empty open world, with the only thing to do in it be the "labyrinths" that aren't really labyrinths at all, just copy-paste hallways in a different color. Random enemies at spots like they think they're Elden Ring (and I don't even like Elden Ring that much) Get some standards. Please.

If you tap the punch button you spin really fast while doing it. It’s an instant kill move…the higher you are the faster you can spin

The reason it holds up is every spiderman game since that one, or maybe the one before that, has had the same basic move set with a few extra tricks thrown in each time and upgraded graphics. Even the new-ish one they released on steam after upgrading the graphics swings like that where he runs on the wall when the gets too close. They found something that works, that makes you feel like spiderman, and just kept building on the awesome foundation instead of trying to reinvent it every time after hiring people who don't know what they're doing.

If they at least tried to make the web swinging in the ps4 game the same then it'd probably have been the best but devs now a days think all their customers are complete Neanderthals that can't learn so they dumb it down and make it impossible for you to touch the ground while web swinging. Makes it way less replayable and really boring after a while.

These movie license Spider-Man games on Ps2 were fun but their graphics were not very advanced for the time at all. It's funny how Spider-man gets a dynamic shadow on the ground but every other character just has a circle shadow.

First Spider Man was fine but it in that you were webbing to air in a canned animation. It was Spider Man 2 that introduced context accurate (for its time) webbing. That shit was not surpassed until the most recent spider man games.

What happened to games like this? 2 phrases you'll see more often than anything else in video game comments. 1. Frame rate, omg my eyes its not 200 frames per second! because I need to jerk off over my hardware...as people care more about graphics and framerate then gameplay today. 2. Not every game has to re-invent the genre you know...because talking about how games are not doing anything unique or special has now become some level of crime to wish for and we should be much happier getting the same old games that work and are ok more than we should push for something different.
