Forster Powder Funnel with Long Drop Tube

In this video I go over the Forster Blue Ribbon Powder Funnel with Long Drop Tube. When used with extruded powder this tool helps the powder to better compress as it enters the case to be able to fit more powder in the same case volume. We use 6.5 creedmoor cases to demonstrate what 51.5 grains of reloder 26 looks like when loaded with the funnel with drop tube vs a standard Hornady Funnel. The results are pretty impressive.

I've found that glass lab funnels(easily sourced from ebay or amazon) are a great way to basically eliminate static cling, and because they're clear, you can see if any powder is stuck inside the funnel or tube. Sizes, styles and manufacturers(with obvious pricing differences) abound, and since I like using a funnel that fits INSIDE the neck of the case, a small diameter tube is a great way to keep powder flowing at a more metered rate. My small glass tube cost me under $10.

Old trick for loading Black Powder cartridges. I made the drop tube I use for loading 45-70 it is 31" long and it settles charges nicely. The key to using a drop tube to its max advantage is to poor sloooooooow. This gives each grain a chance to settle before the next drops on top of it.

I know this is an old video, but I found out about this product watching it. It has made compressed loads and .458 win mag a lot easier to seat bullets in. Thanks

Spraying the funnel with StaticGuard will help. I've used StaticGuard since I started reloading 30+ years ago. It's very helpful for treating powder hoppers which sometimes are awful about having static cling but which offer no way to wipe the inside with a dryer sheet. Not sure if wiping the outside with a dryer sheet would be effective.

So are you spraying the static guard on the surface that is in contact with the powder? I never would have thought to try aerosolized static guard. How often do you apply it?

Interesting, wonder what effect this would have on a non compressed load of 41.5 gr of H4350 in the Hornady case with a 140 ELD-M using the drop funnel? Would the compressed grains burn more efficiently or no change?

I really think that this tool will keep you from smashing the powder as much for a given charge weight. My theory is this will do 2 things. 1 keep bullet seating more consistent, and 2 not break apart the grains of powder to better maintain its temperature stability. Only time will tell. It shouldn't have any effect on a non-compressed load. In that scenario, the kernels might be packed tightly at first, but they will move freely as the bullet is handled.

njgrplr2007 thanks, didn't even think about "handling" the cartridge after it's loaded. Powder will loosen up as placed in the ammo box and removed/loaded into the magazine :). Pointless funnel for myself as my loads are not compressed

I have noticed that some of my max loads will have some unburned grains of powder in the barrel. Pull the bolt out and take a look down the barrel on some of your compressed loads. Maybe this tool will help to provide a complete burn.

Wipe it down with dryer sheets, anti static and it should help

Yup. I use dryer sheets for any static issues with plastic items. I also have been using the Forster long drop tube for many years.

is that a 10th or 100th of a grain accuracy? if 100th could you please tell me brand and model# thanks!

It reads in .02 grain increments, however I can't tell you exactly which one that it is. They have many that look alike but you can't guarantee which one you get. It was from Amazon. BAR

The trick is pouring it slow. The drop tube helps a little, but pouring it slow is what helps the most. Should have tried slowly pouring with your Hornady funnel.

your powder dropping technique leads a lot to be desired. Use the sides of the funnel to create a swirl of the powder going into the case. This has the same effect as your drop tube in allowing better compaction of extruded powder.

Sorry chris but I completely disagree. Your technique may improve it, but no where close to a drop tube. It's a different planet.

@@BoltActionReloading I didn't mean to imply that a drop tube isn't helpful. Look up a fella called Mic MCPhearson... he did a lot of work on the organization and packing of extruded powder in a cartridge case. He proved with empirical data over thousands of rounds that swirling powder through the funnel increased the bulk density of the powder by several percent.
