This was taken on 27March2019, while I was participating in the evening flag detail at 10th Mountain Division Headquarters in Fort Drum, NY. This was the daily lowering of the colors, which happens everyday at 1700 (5:00 PM) to signal the end of the duty day, with the flag being lowered, folded, and retired for the night. The ceremony is accompanied by the playing of “To the Colors” and “Retreat,” along with a cannon salute. The cannon can be heard up to five miles away. I was manning the cannon in this video, and it was an extraordinary honor for me.

I never thought there was a day I would miss this. Yes, I've done flag duty on a weekend. Yes, it sucks in the moment, but looking back now, being in charge of our countries colors for a day was the greatest honor ever. The other one was the funeral details I got called to do.

I was part of flag detail on Christmas at Fort Leonard Wood in 2022 and we raised the Garrison flag, which was enormous (20’x38’). Such an honor 🇺🇸 🫡

The garrison flag is always the biggest and best to raise. I also actually did flag detail at Fort Leonard Wood earlier this year while out at ALC, was also the cannon guy.

I spent 26 years in the Army, and i remember each day that we waited for retreat and to the colors before we were released, such an amazing patriotic ceremony

Man I miss Drum. I thought I would hate it and the first winter I did. But, it quickly became my home.

👏😐 Soldiers are the reason why we are free. This is the reason why I'm proud to say that I am an American. We are a place without any specific religion. This mixing pot I call home is a historical art. I am a lucky person to be here in America right now. 😁

theNYANkittyCAT I will say that Christianity is the dominant religion within the United States, but yes, anyone who lives here is free to practice any religion of their choice. It’s what we fight for. Thank your for your support!

@@zachlang1982 After all, it was founded on Judeo-Christian values. Which is why we have the freedom of religion. God bless all our military servicemen. Thanks my man.

The National Guard is the reason we're free, they were the first organized branch of the US military, the US Army as a whole didn't come around until just before independence. This is why the National Guard has kept the Minuteman symbol and logo.

This gun rocks the house! I enjoyed watching this in the mornings when I was working for a while on the fire suppression downstairs. I'd love to have one of these to wake up the neighbors every day for sure!

I got unlucky enough to get stuck on division staff duty back around '08 or 09. I got to pull the lanyard on the cannon both at reveille and retreat and, being a grunt who's never touched a arty piece in his life, I remember the pull being a little (lot) stiffer than I thought it would be and my first pull did not fire and I missed the first beat of reveille. Never talked shit about the cannon firing late again after that. Was great fun setting off car alarms all around Hays hall though.

I never knew that the salute was fired before the start of To The Colors. Being on the far south of the post, the sound never reached us until after the bugle started on our speakers.
@zachlang1982

So it’s technically supposed to be fired on the first note of “To the Colors,” but it’s easier to pull the lanyard during the pause between the two bugle calls. It also sounds better by doing that.

Normally I hear Retreat and the National Anthem, that is because I’m on an Air Force base. I am currently nearing March AFB, which I can hear 3 miles away.
@zachlang1982
@zachlang1982 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah the Air Force plays the National Anthem during their Retreat. In the Army we have a bugle play “Retreat” and “To the Colors,” and most major Army installations have a cannon to fire a salute with.

Saw a comment of your’s from 5 years ago on a video saying you were gunna join the Marine Corp. Guess you did. Congratulations! Did you learn how/when to joke about other branches? Because that’s what the thread was about. I’m sure 5 years have made a huge difference in you. The video is called “Marine Corp drill instructor massacres recruits”

Senseless Nonsense Actually that’s the irony behind it... I joined the Army. Halfway through high school I talked to a lot of veterans and even rubbed shoulders with an Army recruiter and I chose the Army lol. All of those comments I made a few years prior I regret and look back on them as childish. I love the Army overall and glad I joined.

@@zachlang1982 Hey, that's part of growing up. I know I'm a very different person than who I was 5 years ago and look back at some things and think, "What was I thinking?" lol Glad you chose a path that spoke to you and didn't stubbornly stick to something just because. Congratulations!
