Project Past History Unscripted Series
The First Underground railroad
Episode 6
Did you know over a century before the Underground Railroad went North it went South to Florida?
In 1689 the Spanish authorities in Florida would begin offering asylum to escaped slaves from the southern English colonies. In return the escaped slaves would have to convert to Catholicism and join the militia to help defend St Augustine. Fort Mose would be constructed in 1738 and would become the very first free black settlement in what would become the United States. Fort Mose would play a significant role in Spain's defense of St Augustine in 1740. The Militia would prove itself in the "bloody battle of Mose" against the English.
