The First Underground railroad
Episode 6
Did you know over a century before the Underground Railroad went North it went South to Florida?
In 1689 the Spanish authorities in Florida would begin offering asylum to escaped slaves from the southern English colonies. In return the escaped slaves would have to convert to Catholicism and join the militia to help defend St Augustine. Fort Mose would be constructed in 1738 and would become the very first free black settlement in what would become the United States. Fort Mose would play a significant role in Spain's defense of St Augustine in 1740. The Militia would prove itself in the "bloody battle of Mose" against the English. Check out this awesome site full of artifact and a state of the art visitor center.

Rewatching some of your older videos since you cover hidden gems, did you hear about archaeologists dredging the pond where the fort once stood earlier this month for artifacts?

I appreciate that. The older ones are a little rough editing wise so grant me some grace 😂 I did hear that but I’m not sure what they found. I’ll have to look that up. The team here in St Augustine is phenomenal.

The Museum is located in the United States so it's displays are in English. The museum highlights Spain's culture in St Augustine during the 18th century.

The Spanish also had black slaves. The difference between the English and the Spanish was that the Spanish allowed their slaves to work side jobs and save up to buy their freedom. This was the law throughout the Spanish Empire thanks to the reforms Father Bartholomew De Las Casas worked for. The French and Portuguese allowed this also. The English and Dutch though kept enslaved people as enslaved their entire life and could not buy their freedom at all.

This Guy is not telling the whole story at the beginning of the Spanish conquest of the Americas; they never allowed slavery, only in the last part of the Empire when, before he fell under the English, made the weaken Spanish impire to agree to do slavery because the English imposed this ftrade as a way to commerce and make profits. That's why you see slaves at the end of the Spanish Empire.but Spain have antislavery laws and mix marriages since 1514 by the queen Isabelle of Spain. And for all Anglos remember that Spain was THE ONLY empire of meztisos or MIX RACES PEOPLE AND CATHOLICS

Not really sure what part of the story I am not telling regarding Fort Mosé. It was comprised of escaped and freed slaves from the English colonies. This isn’t a video about the entire Spanish Empire like you are inferring. Spain utilized African slave labor in colonial America just like everyone else so not sure where they didn’t allow slavery.

Look up the Sentencia-Estatuto, the Spanish instituted the first set of racial exclusion laws in modern history. Don't know where you are getting this information from.
