Fort San Cristobal | The Largest In America

Күн бұрынwww.puertoricobygps.com - Fort San Cristobal is the largest military structure built by the Spaniards in the New World. The original fort was completed in 1783 and it covered an area of 27 acres. Today the fort is part of the San Juan National Historic Site, which includes Fort San Cristobal, Fort San Felipe del Morro, Fort San Juan de la Cruz (better known locally as "El Cañuelo") and three fourths of the original city wall. The other third of the city wall was demolished in 1897, along with a significant part of Fort San Cristobal, to help ease the flow of traffic in and out of the walled city. Even so, Fort San Cristobal is still the largest military fortification built by the Spaniards in the New World.
The main objective of Fort San Cristobal was to protect the city of San Juan from land attacks coming from the east, while Fort San Felipe del Morro and Fort San Juan de la Cruz protected the entrance to San Juan Bay.
Spanish forts in Puerto Rico were built using the latest technology of the day. And while they seem simple today, there are actually many engineering, architecture and military strategy tecniques built into the forts that still surprise the visitor. Be sure to ask your friendly park ranger about the construction of the city walls and the tunnels at Fort San Cristobal and Fort San Felipe del Morro. There's a lot more there than you might think.
The San Juan National Historic Site was added to the UNESCO Register of World Heritage Sites in 1983. It is operated by the United States National Park Service. For more information call 787-729-6777.

Irish soldiers in the Spanish Army helps to construct part of this edifications after they leave the English army for abusses against them after that Irish soldiers married Puerto Ricans womans and even some Puerto Rican people tell them to leave others Puerto Rican people love them and wanted them to stay in the Island because this Irish soldiers help Spanish soldiers in the Spanish war to keep Puerto Rico safe but United States at last take the island of Puerto Rico as their territory after Spain lose their Colonies in America in the Caribbean sea but that's why you can see some Puerto Rican people with Irish last names.

Nice video, very informative! Just one hair-splitting detail, though, there are a handful of other walled cities in the New World, like Ville de Quebec in Quebec, and (I believe) Campeche, Mexico. San Juan WOULD however be the only walled city in the US, which would be wicked awesome :-) .

Jacob Hoss the biggest fort in the new world is the Morro in Puerto Rico del Felipe 11 built by Spain in 1578 Latin America don't have a fort like this one no one does I feel El Morro belongs to the Puerto Rican people is our Spanish culture I will protect this fort with my life if I have to that's how much it means to me

Actually, I don't know of any city in America that is walled all around. In fact, the only one like that in Spain is Ávila. That's what I was referring to. If they hadn't destroyed the missing portion of the San Juan wall, Old San Juan would be the only walled city in the new world (walled all around).

Yes. There is a multi-day pass for $7 that covers both forts. You can visit as many times as you wish.

Irish soldiers constructed something in this fortress castles I read somewhere and also this Spanish edifications of the El morro fortress and the san felipe castle was more big edifications but part of this fortress was eliminated to make new buldings, streets after Spain lose Puerto Rico in the Spanish War against United States, this is sad because they destroyed part of the Puerto Rican story when they destroyed part of this edifications of the el morro and San Felipe castle but even they destroyed part of this edifications in San Juan Puerto Rico this fortress still the biggest edifications in the new world the story say.
