Fort Steuben Mall - Steubenville, OH. A mall that is trying to come back. With repairs and walls covering old empty tenants, this place clings to life. It lost 2 anchors in 2016 and 2017 which really hurt this place but Walmart may be why. However is Walmart the reason the mall survives?

Ahh yes the Fort Steuben Mall. Worked in that area for 5 years. Use to go in the mall from time to time. Looks like they are trying to improve and bring some life back. The Ville restuarant is very popular. I remember the radio shack and LJS/AW right by the entrance by Walmart. The skylight just by the old Macy's is very neat.

They built a brand new mall in Robinson Township, PA which is about 30 minutes away. It’s a really nice mall and there isn’t any state sales tax in PA, so most people from this area go shopping in Pennsylvania. I remember being a kid and growing up going to this mall. There were so many stores and so many people! So sad to see what’s its become. However, the downtown area was the place to be until the mall killed it in the early 70s.

Fun fact.... Sam Walton worked for James Cash Penney in Des Moines, Iowa before Sam started his own business called Walton's 5 & 10 in Bentonville, Arkansas which gave Sam the idea to open his own retail store as James Cash Penney did with JC Penney. I miss Waldon books & B Dalton Books.

I'll need to check it out in December when I'm back in the area for a couple weeks for some Century 3 nostalgia (although I'll be doing most of that at Century 3 itself since it's supposed to be demolished in March next year according to the permits).

What killed the malls is online ordering. You have Amazon, etc. Rent for a business in a mall is expensive. Prices are jacked up because you are paying for the convenience of a mall. I remember in the '70's, malls were booming. The times have changed. It's very sad because I have fond memories of the malls during the 70's.

@@davinp I agree. I live in Minnesota and of course (in the cities) you have the Mall of America. I'm sure they're doing well. But society has changed also. I don't know if teenagers hang out in malls anymore with their friends. The internet has changed how we shop, that's for sure.

I love the editing choices in this video even more than the last one! Even that abrupt stop on Walmart; Walmart tends to kinda stands out like a sore thumb when in a place like this. Kohan is well known for letting malls rot. Woodville Mall in Northwood, OH (suburban Toledo) is a prime example. The city eventually condemned and demolished it due to the faulty roof, no heat in the mall, and faulty sprinklers.

You keep getting better with your filming without losing your personal style and vision. It's a sad mall, but maybe the owners should look at getting a big name tenant IN THE MALL, at Kaufmanns. Maybe Boscov or KOhls or the Marshalls and company line of stores. It's trying to stay alive. Does the WalMart have a mall entrance or is it completely a very close outside parsell? I would not be surprised if WalMart wanted to stand on it own. Stupid WalMart. I think the mall goes on thanks to the other outer stores like Dicks and Rural King and Pets Supply Plus (which I would shop to avoid giving my $$$ to PetSmart, have a story there.)

The Walmart does not have a mall entrance which probably hurts it more than anything but I'm sure Walmart didnt want an entrance. The layout is kind of weird anyway, so even if it did, it would require a whole new wing or hallway to be erected to connect the buildings. Kayla and I have both said the same thing, a Boscov's would be the saving grace of this mall. They do great everywhere they exist... even at places like Clearview Mall which is dead. That store alone had more customers in it than the whole mall. But still, it brings money to the mall. Boscov's would be a great addition. The Sears was recently sold and I didnt mention it in my video to spread would could only be speculation but word on the street is the Sears will be a Fun Fore All indoor activity place. So life is coming back to the mall at least a little bit anyway.
