Spoiler: There were no fireworks.
A visit to Fort Totten, for the 7th annual Fort Totten Fireworks. There were food trucks, and everyone enjoyed picnicking, with entertainment by Chicken Head Rocks along with the Phil Costa and the Something Special Band. Wednesday, June 26, 2024.
It was really very nice until the predicted electrical storm rolled in, as forecasted, and it turned disastrous quickly. Flash flooding, lots of lightning, and a tree fell on a car in the park pinning 3 people inside ( pix11.com/news/morning/tree-f... ). Outside Fort Totten, under the Cross Island Overpass, was the only shelter and we were wading through a good 6" of water surrounded by lightning to get there. Many cars were floating around in the streets, stuck in the flash floods.
I couldn't film it because it was so dangerous with the deluge, crazy winds, constant lightning, and it was DARK! NYPD funneled thousands through METAL barricades while yelling amongst themselves to not touch the barricades. If this was the evacuation plan, a better plan is needed. "vacate the park and find shelter outside" while being funneled through metal barricades on both sides with zero shelter available in the nearby vicinity outside the fort is not an emergency evacuation plan. Surprised, because nearly all first responders in NYC have staff and training facilities at Fort Totten.
This was the first large event we've been to at Fort Totten. We were aware of the rain, but my friend was really looking forward to going, so we went. Again, it was very nice, until it wasn't.
