What’s going on with Snake’s beard? It’s always bothered me how recent interpretations of Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid always give him a full beard like his father Big Boss. It always leads to a lot of confusion in the casual fan base because people can’t tell the difference between Solid Snake and Big Boss. In this video I’ll compile all of Snake’s mainline appearances and crossovers to figure how many times he’s appeared with and without a beard.

@@kero_drago Some adjustments on Raiden should be made that will be a major improvement. Why did Epic make him look like Owen Wilson? His chin is slightly too long/large. His skin is too tanned. His eyes are not intense/focused enough, expression is too relaxed. His lower body is too short, small, slender, while his ribcage slightly too large. His shoes look too heavy & bulky unlike the light & sneaky design of MGS2. His bangs need to be longer over eyes, hair more light & feathered, not thick & pasta. Raiden's face in some angles looks less angular & slim than it should be. Raiden's face shape is graceful, tapered & sharp. Please. Side-by-side compare it.

The only reason Sakurai chose the MGS3 model for Brawl Snake is because he wanted to represent Metal Gear as a whole, representing Big Boss and Solid Snake- despite the fact that it is clearly more closer to resemble Solid Snake. While Sakurai and the Smash Bros. team knows why they made this choice, Fortnite and other subsequent sources are just copy and pasting.

The problem with that thoe is because of the cartoon design of fortnite it makes it impossible to add stubbles without it looking stupid that's like the same think for mrbeast he does not have a full beard but they game him one anyway

No because typically default Fortnite skin must encompass as many of that IP as possible, that's why Superman has red trunks on his new52 costume and subtle hint on Chris Reeve version in Clark Kent dress up and way he combs his hair, that's why comic book Batman has new52 costume with soft belt with patches and with emblem like in TNBA era of DCAU, that's why TMNT have all different elements on each turtle and from Mirage (Raph's bandana is from original TMNT #9 and way he holds his sais on his back and the fact that Turtles "kill" and use guns just like in original TMNT #5 and # 9 last one even had battle royale) + 80's cartoon (buckles with first name letters) + 2003 (white eyes on multicolored bands) + Rise (Mike with One nunchuck) + Bay produced movies (additional armor + they all have different elements from each other) And Naked is as much main character now as Solid was, that's why in Fortnite and in Super Smash. It's just mix of two (+nv goggles from MGS1 title screen)

@@isayha1345 In Snake vs Monkeys in MGS 3 Persistance Disk Solid Snake has exact model as of Naked for his face. But then they didn't even bother to change locations, just naked them with Spanish names as if (Solid) Snake is in Mexico or Brazil jungle instead of Russia. Yeah, they could. Just like they could release pure red trunks costume with open neck and pure new52 costume for Superman, pure trunks 00s costume and pure new52 costume for Batman , all kinds of April O'Neil with all kinds of hair color and skin color and costume. But it is what it is in the end. And again, even Kojima wasn't as anal about facial hair as author of this video or "even" me. But again , at least we all have Old Snake 100% true to his canon appearance. Yes it is complete whack tho how main character became shafted in popularity by secondary/Legacy/prequel characters and now future fans of "that guy from Fortnite" will remember him by this mix mash from Super Smash and by his 4 look it is like if Batman was remembered by his The Dark Knight Returns look but most popular character was balding Green Arrow with cybernetic arm/without an arm or Joker.

Most likely the based his Fortnite skin on the smash model and thus he has a beard. As far as I can recall Fortnite has no characters with a stubble , since this is based on MGS 2 snake it could also be that they were faced with either making him completely clean shaven or to try and retain the facial hair and give him a full beard. Personally, I don't mind the beard because it encapsulates the franchise better as a whole.

So to simply put it, back in 2004, there was little information and a lot of confusion on the game Metal Gear Solid 3 featuring Snake as the main character but taking place in 1964, from the reveal of the game all the way to the launch. It’s only when people finished the game is when they get the big reveal that Naked Snake is actually Big Boss. Which is what created so much confusion in the community and partnering companies on who Snake in MGS3 was and the fact that he had a beard. After a year or 2 of the game being released, several blogs and gaming outlets cleared the air on all the confusion while giving spoiler alerts on who Naked Snake actual is. Big Boss, the father of Solid snake and Liquid snake

I think they chose the beard since its so similar to the Smash render, but also, Fortnite is kind of marketed to a younger audience, who may not know who Snake is or where he was from. So what does Fortnite do? They look to the 2nd most popular thing Snake is in, which is Smash, which many kids would probably know, so it makes sense that they would use this similar design, alongside that, the beard.

For Smash Bros. I always kinda figured they wanted to represent both Solid Snake and Big Boss as a single character. I think Kojima was the one who suggested mixing the designs too, probably for that reason.

They don't have all his genes, solid has every dominant gene while liquid has a the recessive ones. I believe only solidius has the genetic profile of big boss, though solid is pretty close cause he's getting any traits that were represented in big boss while Liquid got two sets of any traits big boss didn't have like blonde hair and blue eyes.

Although this would be scientifically inaccurate, as blonde hair is a recessive gene, but in the mgs universe, they use the terms "dominant" and "recessive" as synonyms of "superior" "inferior" physically wise.

It was always my head canon that snake was clean shaven until the beginning of mgs2 where he'd have stubble. As pliskin he'd have a short beard, not as big as venom or big boss... but... enough (more like solidus). For 4 he'd shave it for the mustache and if you were to see him after the events of MGS2 and before he become old snake... he'd have a beard.

I can see that happening. You can definitely tell that his pliskin beard is a little thicker, but like you said not quite the same as big boss. By the time Raiden meets up with Snake in arsenal gear though, he’s back to the same stubble from the beginning of the game.

perfectly valid. I just think it’s important that Naked Snake have a full beard instead of Solid Snake so it’s easier to distinguish the two from a design perspective.

As a massive mgs fan myself playing it since i was a child i really dont see the problem people have with it. I mean i love solid snake more than i do big boss or naked whichever people prefer to call him and his mgs2 design was always my favourite but the beard doesnt annoy me 1 bit. I mean he has been depicted differently in a few pieces of media now and in some cases he did at least have a stubble. So i dont see the point in crying over the beard as much especially if they are just copying the nintendo version (which i remember nobody having an issue with) As for him being skinny its fortnite. They always make the characters look goofy and snake is always depicted as a stealth character so they probably just designed it more with that in mind

nope, nothing wrong about it, konami just likes to use the best version of solid Snake which is the Super Smash Bros Snake, it's the combination of Solid and Naked Snake. I just wish we had a eyepatch big boss costume with some other costumes like naked snake sneaking suit portable ops sneaking suit naked snake fatigues and tuxedo

I see this take a lot and I see where you’re coming from but there’s just way more evidence pointing to him being Solid Snake in smash. Despite literally having Naked Snake’s face in brawl, the stage is Shadow Moses, the costume is the mgs2 sneaking suit, recovery uses a cypher, Nikita missle as side b, and not to mention codec calls with Otacon, Campbell, etc. That last one especially is the nail in the coffin for it being David in my opinion. You’re right about Konami really pushing this specific look for Snake though (with the beard). I’ll have to find the source for a future video I’m cooking up but I clearly remember a quote from Sakurai saying Kojima productions actually requested the face be similar to mgs3. Naked Snake’s model was also the higher poly model at the time hence why it was probably used.

Smash’s representation of snake was inaccurate, but it was intentional because he’s a fusion of all mgs. His stage is from 1, his suit is from 2, and his face is from 3. Everyone else’s idea of snake is inaccurate bc they only know snake from smash, and they don’t know better.

I always assumed that in Brawl they had a bearded Solid Snake because thay had to use the most recent model for the Wii, which I guess it's the MGS3 Naked Snake. As for Fortnite, they just googled "Solid Snake" and downloaded the SSBU model from somewhere to work on the skin, that's my guess. MGS is a curious case, because despite being such a revered franchise most people rather pretend they have played the games (hence why so many get mad when they're called out for mistaking Big Boss for Solid Snake), I wouldn't be surprised if the people in charge of modeling Snake for either Fortnite or SSBU just knew MGS through general culture and assumed he had a beard.

I'm gonna personally headcanon that the bearded solid snake is in-between mgs 2 and 4 & he hasn't shaved yet to just the stache so I don't look at him and think "man he looks way too much like his dad/brother/clone donor.". also same fully on them patching in the less bearded stubble look for him so that if they do add big boss in the future they do look distinct. also they need to give love to the mgs1 Shadow Moses sneaking suit as it seems they exclusively go for the msg2 sneaking suit. love them both at the end of the day and gonna main solid snake forever till maybe they add Dante from devil may cry then swap back and forth. but yee LOVELY VID~!!!

You should have made the distinction between his 5’o clock shadow in MGS2 (which you can shave in an easter egg) and his complete lack of beard in everything else. The definition for a beard is just the presence of facial hair on the cheeks or jawline so his 5’o clock in MGS2 technically counts as a beard. In Smash Brawl his beard was filled out a lot more and in Ultimate its just a full beard. Those are obviously the renders that Epic used when modeling Snake. Theres also a lot more wrong with his design in Fortnite but that’s mostly because of the games art style.

He has a beard in MGS2 and in the artwork for the it as well. It's just fuller in smash and fortnite. Its probably how it was meant to look.

Ohhh, so that's why i prefer using the old style! I'll be honest, i never had the chance to play this franchise but i know a bit about the lore and cinematics. Soo when i unlocked the skin, idk how to explain, but i didn't felt good with the normal aspect(i didn't even remembered the difference between Naked Snake and Solid Snake) so I only use the Old Snake versión because i think it looks way cooler (and also, it's the less used i think)

it's probably a stylistic choice like how RE Village Chris has heavy stubble and not a full beard in his game, but in fortnite they just gave him the full beard. I think maybe the same happened to snake.

This is BS. They are also adding Raiden only with his Sons of Liberty style and that's it. No Cyborg variant. This collab would have been PERFECT with: - Solid Snake with MGS1, 2, 4, and Big Boss Variants. - Raiden with MGS2 and 4 variants. - Meryl with MGS1 and 4 variants. - Revolver Ocelot with MGS1 and 4 and maybe 5 variants.

Honestly, it would be better if instead of the one alt visual with him wearing the night vision googles it should have been him without the beard, so then you would have MGS 1/2 Snake, Snake Eater Snake and MGS4 Old Snake in one character.
