Just going over how I construct my fursuit heads and what products I use, both for people interested in working with fosshape themselves and for clients who want to see how they are made before committing to a commission.
Products mentioned are:
Fosshape
Galvanized steel wire (rust resistant)
Fabri-tac
EVA Foam clay
Free Form Air Epoxy

Adding that ive since updated my technique a bit. I now skip the fabriTac step, and I dont use rubber paint for sealing the foam clay. I seal with rigid Creature Cast neoprene, which waterproofs and adds strength. Ive also switched to 3d printed hinges as they move better and I find them very strong.

Shoot, I'd been hoping that fosshape was a flexible, color-able, see-through fabric---I was thinking about creating a frog headpiece that's a little difficult to describe in words, but I'd wanted a flexible throat for the frog, and I'd been hoping to have the throat-part be in front of my face: if I can find material that I can see out of, then I can get really good visibility.

I've been out of the costuming hobby for a while but I'm so glad I came across this. I LOVE seeing people find and experiment with new materials! The potential of the materials you use is exciting :)

This is how furtec would make many of their heads! Lance is a huge fosshape fan.

This is really cool! I love seeing non-traditional head bases. I might try this for my head one day.

This is brilliant, completely unlike any construction method I've seen so far, thank you so much for sharing!!! If you're ever considering making more tutorials, would love to see one for the steaming method you mentioned for smoothing fur

Wow, this is a great way to make suits! I've seen paper mache clay used, and I thought that was uncommon, but this is so unique! I might use this to make my Khajit cosplay!

I'm new to the fandom and considering making a fursuit in the future, but I have anhidrosis and overheat easily, so I've been looking for work-arounds. This definitely seems much safer than upholstery foam! Thanks for sharing, what a neat material. How does it compare in price to foam? How do you mold it into shape, do you use a foam/resin base?

This is a very cool thechnique! :D Ive been wondering how to make fursuits more breathable, as i overheat super quickly and just can imagine wearing a suit in summer. This helps a lot! ^w^ I wonder how you would go about cleaning it? Since hot steam is used to shape the fosshape, im wondering if luke-warm water (Plus stuff like dishwashing liquid and softener) could destroy the shaping and make it all mushy. Should only a mix of scenter water-desinfectand mix be used for it?

fosshape activates starting at boiling temp, so anything below that is probably fine to wash with. since it's a thermoplastic i don't think dish soap would hurt it (unless it's been airbrushed), although personally i'd probably use a wash cloth or something to sponge on soapy water vs soaking it the way some people do foam heads.

How do you make the base itself? Do you put the fosshape on a mold of sorts and then heat treat it?

May I ask if you ever tried 3d printed heads and what is your idea or take on it? I find they're fairly easy to work with and light weight but this is much lighter for obvious reasons.

Ive never worked with them for a fursuit, but ive used them for my day job occasionally. They are neat, but not something I'd make since its been like...a decade since ive done any 3d modeling

How you you prevent the wire from snapping or being a poking hazard? Is that what the clay is for?
@StoicVeR
@StoicVeR 2 жыл бұрын
That seems to be the case. The molding and seal keep the wire stable, since the wire is very pliable and constant use such as moving the jaw and animating the suit would warp it very easily

could you wash the bases without them deforming? I've been trying to make heads that are laundry friendly and I very much dislike the idea of a thick foam base soaking up a ton of water possibly leaving you with mold if it doesn't dry out completely
@feralfacade2049
@feralfacade2049 3 жыл бұрын
They dont deform with water, but I wouldnt throw them in the washer. I would hand wash in a sink/tub or use one of the wet vacs (i think the brand is bissel? or something like that)
