Mamlambo Fossils

Mamlambo Fossils

4 жыл бұрын

** Pre-lockdown footage **
I got a tip about a new site where there could be some fossils, so I drove about 4 hours and went for a look. It turned into one of my best fossil hunts! I found some amazing crabs and a few mystery bits and even a shark tooth.
I prepped 3 of the finds to figure out what species of crab they are.
Let me know if you enjoy the preps being done in the same video as me finding them!
Keep safe everyone!

That's so cool, you found crabs all the way from teeny-tiny up to Crabosaurus Rex. That one concretion reminds me of a pastry with it's weird shape, kind of pointy on two sides. And finding that shark tooth just randomly like that was pretty amazing. It'll be interesting to see how that jasper looks when it's cut and polished. Really nice shot of the sunset to close, too-fabulous day!

I'm fairly sure that's a Mako tooth. The tooth was likely lost before it was fully matured, which is why it's hollow.

The tooth is what was formerly referred to as mako, (Isurus hastalis) but now it is being recognized as a white shark and is now in the genus carcharodon. They are relatively common where I'm from, and some (rarely) are found where they are transitioning from C. Hastalis to C. Carcharias (modern white shark) and have developed serrations. This is why the genus was moved from Isurus to Carcharodon.
@MamlamboFossils
@MamlamboFossils 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for all that info Stephen! It makes sense, I've hear that the Mako shark had been moved to another genus but didn't realise that was why 😄
@stephengroff633
@stephengroff633 4 жыл бұрын
@@MamlamboFossils Yeah, it's the main reason for the move, but like quite a few sharks assigning a good genus and species is quite complicated. Since most all of the species of fossil shark are named from teeth the assigned names are changed frequently as more research is done. It also doesn't help that alot of sharks and other fossil were named along time ago when the most important thing was getting naming the most species, so things were names sloppily and sometimes without reason. That's why megalodon has moved from Carcharodon to carcharocles according to some people otodus ( carcharocles is the correct genus by the way, most paleontologists I know and myself believe that megalodon has changed enough to be a different genus than otodus). side note because things were named so sloppily in the past there are actually very common fossils like worn isolated miocene dolphin vertebra kept locked up in the Smithsonian as type specimens of species, that have no scientific value and are not diagnostic of species, but were just named because they could be.

hi Mamlambo, a nice assortment of fossils and my favourite has to be the shark tooth and I too think it's a mako and quite random finding it on the pathway :0) an idea with the fossils/concretions would be to have a stash point that way you won't have to haul all the goodies with you and can just take them on the way back :0) with the crabs different colour it could be down to the sediment they was in and coloured them that way :0) nice prep and would love to see more of them :0) have a super day mate and hoping your all keeping well and safe :0)

no probs mate :0) i'm pretty sure it's a mako, shame the root is not there though :0) a stash point would be good for you as that way you can get more fossils/concretions but you will have to carry them from the beach to the car or use the your red truck as you can put afew on that :0) we will mate and looking forward to the next adventure :0)

What kind of climate do you think new zealand had at that time? I happen to be pretty obsessed with what the climate was like during that time and own a house in france east of the brittany pennisula though I am myself French-American.The fossils that happened to have been found in the brittany pennisula date to the time that crab lived and indicate a subtropical climate like the gulf coast states including the cypress swamps of Louisiana and North of Florida. I am just curious if you have an idea
@MamlamboFossils
@MamlamboFossils 4 жыл бұрын
It was about 5 degrees warmer than the present day, the ocean was also much warmer than it is currently over New Zealand. The area I was in was probably under a few hundred meters of water 😄 Sounds like you live in a great place, I've always wanted to visit France!

@@MamlamboFossils I presume that is celsius and that the climate of new zealand was sub-tropical rather than temperate like it is now just like france would've been

Man, i think those crabs are heading the next level of extinction!!! If you are finished with them one day- there will be not one specimen left ;-) But Newzealand will have a new mountain....the one that grew out of your collection dude! Keep care of your spine, my friend, otherwise it will burst someday with those tons of cool stuff in your backpack!!! All the best...:-)

I like the crab that has the hole going into it, it shows that not just the waves breakup fossils but the creatures of that time may have played a part in the missing limbs / claws, but who knows, can’t wait to see the prep video on the big crab!

Yeah, I think something burrowed into that crab before it was a fossil 😄 Interesting to try and read the story of these fossils. That big crab is a beast, I had to flip it over and start again as I hit the ventral side!

The crab fossils are found all over the world, I'm unsure about Iceland - you want sedimentary rocks rather than volcanic. Ask at your local museum or rock club, they will know for sure 😄

77 lbs is about my max in a backpack, but I think your a bigger than me (: . So cool. Why were the legs on that first crab with the legs sticking still attached? That rock is very telling about how they were formed. For the most part they have very little erosion. If dug out of the hillside, I say none. But yeah that green one with all the legs poking out tell me these crabs and such were encapsulated inside a globular hot mass while free floating and then cured licked inside. The kiwis plastic matrix can’t always contain the entire crab and parts stick out. The nature of brokenness in your typical bone conglomerates tells me it was a devastating cataclysm of some type. Probably cometary in nature
@doctorofart
@doctorofart 2 жыл бұрын
While molten and hot Capillary action would try its best to encapsulate the entire mass. You can see at some of the extended bumps how the material looks as if it was stretched over the bump.
