Lyme Regis Fossils

Lyme Regis Fossils

Жыл бұрын

I am fossil hunting West of Lyme Regis today.I’m going fossil hunting along the Jurassic Coast at low tide. I’d like to find some of the beautiful little pyrite ammonites that wash out along the beach at low tide. Little nuggets of gold delight, saved from the shifting sands. I recommend wearing safety glasses and sturdy rubber gloves when hammering the right little rocks. I am going to show you right at the end of the video an old film of me splitting an ammonite out of a little limestone rock. This little rock splitting video has done very well on KZfaq for me with millions of views. I ask in the short form video is it an Omanyte, snail or ammonite? The rock is whole before i tap the ammonite out of it, but some people have suggested the rock was split already. So look and learn how i spend alot of time sizing the rock up. Fossil hunting really does take hours of patience and persistence .Remember the cliffs are dangerous and liable to fall suddenly and without warning. Keep away from the dangerous cliffs, the best fossils are washed out onto the beaches at low tide, by the sea's actions. Look out for the slippery seaweed on the ledges and rocks. I offer fossil walks along the Jurassic Coast on the following website, so feel free to take a look at the website I made, with our online fossil walks ------www.lymeregisfossilwalks.com There is a fossil collecting code of conduct in place along the Jurassic Coast.

Love watching your videos! I’m disabled and unable to get to any of the areas of beach where fossils are likely to be found but it’s a great second best to see what you find. Thank you so much! I shall continue to dream of finding one of the tiny fool’s gold ammonites.

Thanks 🙏 for your comment, I did well last Sunday fossil collecting 🍀! The sea 🌊 had been rough the days before, so I think it had washed some more fossils out - at low tide. I think 🤔 it’s taken me 30 years to really have a good knowledge on all the geology, rocks and fossils around here 🙌

I take guided fossil walks out along the Jurassic Coast- at low tide. I’ve been lucky 🍀 enough to get the family groups out onto the beaches doing some sieving work to find fossils. The kids have so much enthusiasm and better eyesight 👀, plus they are closer to the ground. They seem to find more than me when I teach them where to look. They have a really good eye for finding fossils some children do and a great knowledge for their years .

When you say you go west at Lyme is that looking at the sea or land? Towards beer or west Bay?
@LymeRegisFossils

West of Lyme Regis heading towards Seaton at low tide. I get into Pinnhay Bay area and look for fossils. As the tide comes in quickly and cut you off I often only get that far - and I walk fast .

You can walk a little further then from the ammonite pavement, over the oyster shell beds to where there are some big boulders - Seven Rock Point. There are patches of iron pyrite in amongst the boulders, with a few ammonite fossils in. I have found Crinoid and vertebrae there as well. I find there is always something washing out at Seven Rocks point! To get around into Pinhay Bay is a bit more difficult, and you really have to know the area well and get the tides right. Sometimes there are some really good low tides and I venture further West of Lyme Regis than usual. I always go out in conjunction with safe tide times. The cliffs are dangerous and liable to fall suddenly and without warning. Some fossil walk guides take you along this stretch, but only when the tides are right.

Thank you so much for the quick reply! I am flexible.. well...time wise that is😊 I would like to plan a trip soon somewhere between November and April. I was reading the sea provides the most gifts because of the rough waves in that time period. I probably will come alone because I don't have friends who are interested enough to have a walk collecting stones whatever the weather. I spent so little money during the pandemic that I gladly can now spent money to be in the company of a real long-time expert. I plan the rest when I know when you have a 2 hour gab in your kalender. I will contact you soon. Until then, take care and all the best!

The very best time would be to come in January or February when the stormy ⛈️ weather has done a lot of erosion of the mudslides. The sea does the work for you washing the fossils out onto the beaches. I can check the tides for the best times to be on the beach later, when they get worked out . You can message me on my E-mail on my website. The walks usually take 4 hours with a bit of fossil prep
