Mamlambo Fossils

Mamlambo Fossils

5 ай бұрын

I started my road trip down to the tip of the South Island by driving from Christchurch to Dunedin, stopping at a couple of places to look for a fossil or two of course!
The geology museum at Otago University is definitely worth visiting, it has some very informative displays and great examples of fossils from the area.
If you want to check out more footage from my university adventures, I have uploaded quite a few to my Patreon channel: / mamlambo

That was was fun! That beach was just absolutely covered in those shells! Wow! And that campus was gorgeous! What amazing displays! All those angustiden teeth in one plate is incredible! And that dolphin or small whale skull was amazing! But I was blown away at the size of that penguin! Holy moly was it a big boy! And you found that tiny crab too. Day one was just amazing! Can't wait for day two! Thanks Morne!

Those teeth are very reminiscent of Otodus obliquus. I know they're not, but they're still very reminiscent, nevertheless. I must go to Dunedin museum if I'm ever able to visit the rellies in NZ. It still looks like a proper museum.

@@MamlamboFossils you know penguins started to evolve to get big soon after the KPG extinction. and I know it's of Kairuku which lived during the Oligocene but cool to know how creatures evolved after the non-avian dinosaurs and other creatures died out.

My comment about the crab vanished. I was told the fossils on that beach are 200,000 years old and are called false fossils due to their age. I have an excellent specimen that I think I have shown you last time you were in Oamaru but KZfaq didn't like me linking photos of it here. Had you walked another 500 metres you would have encountered massive drifts of fossils literally covering the beach. Last time I was there they were over half a metre deep.
