Fostex MR8 HD pt 1: how to bounce tracks and record synth sequences synced to Fostex's MIDI output.

Күн бұрынi have a love/hate relationship with this fuckin thing. it's a dinosaur but it is the ONLY affordable portable multi track recording device that has a MIDI clock sync feature. If you use synths or drum machines or anything with MIDI and wish to go "DAWless" then the Fostex MR8 HD has a purpose. Otherwise it's a counter-intuitive piece of shit relative to modern multitrack recorders.
It does not have MIDI IN, just MIDI OUT. The only input that will receive a synthesizers output is 1 "Line" input on Fostex's Channel 1. All the other channels are Unbalanced inputs that do not work for Synths.
MIDI syncing where you are sending clock data to a triggerable sequence (like a sequence you save on a Keystep or a synth's internal sequencer) can only happen if you follow a VERY TRICKY AND FINICKY set of procedures on the Foestex. But it's far better than nothing and allows me to record anything away from a computer.

Welcome to the arcane old world I am in. You can set the pre-roll (2 bars) to zero, and combining that with Auto punch-in may help you get things lined up.

I knew about the pre roll edit, but didn't consider auto punch ins. That's a great idea. Thanks for being a helpful Fostex buddy. There aren't many of us walking around.

Just by luck I happened to be revisiting my machine now to finish some projects from a while back. Indeed I wanted to see how this thing interfaces with midi keyboards.

Do you know if that midi out on the side would keep clock time to help tracking in and syncing up the synth . Also , what does that setting in the menus do that says loop . does it make possible to loop playback of a small recording .

I just got the mr16 and wondering can u use a midi to usb to the pc to record?

I do not own an MR16, just the mr8. But I do know that the MR8 has midi out only, not midi in. So it sends midi as a master device to slave devices. I am not sure about the MR16. I would look for the PDF manual online. Also, I am not sure if it sends more midi data than just midi clock data. So I don't know if the midi CC messages that are generated when you press play or pause or whatever on the device will send those same midi CC messages to the PC or whatever slave device you have
