Children need to learn how to manage powerful emotions like anger, frustration and disappointment, and this video series will help you teach these emotional intelligence skills. You’ll hear from Cherilyn Orr - an education consultant and adjunct professor at Vanguard College in Edmonton, Alberta - as she introduces an emotion coaching strategy explained in her book Signals: How Brain Science and the Bible Help Parents Raise Resilient Children.
This strategy for teaching emotional regulation is effective, firstly, because it uses a simple three-colour model that kids can readily understand. Also importantly, it takes a holistic approach to training the child by making the pursuit of emotional health a family affair. Thirdly, this strategy takes into account how stress diminishes a child’s cognitive ability - something traditional methods of discipline often overlook.
