Some folks were moving out, and we found a 74(?) CJ5 hiding in the woods. What should we do with it? Is it worth doing anything to it? What would you do with it? I know it can be had for a deal.......

All of us jeep CJ 5 & 7 fans would like to see it saved . Only if chassis's are wasted do you part it out if a chassis cannot be located . Cj5 chassis's are becoming even scarcer now . With some work and dedication , it's salvageable . Yeah , will take time , resource and money but if your heart is in it , it'll get done . Sounds to me like it'll go up for sale . Hope it goes to someone who has a big heart for CJ's . I'd make a bid in a heartbeat but I'm sure my dad will take a fit when I ask if I can keep it at his house until my two cj5 projects get done . Hey , I can't be greedy . It's got to go to someone who will show it love and NOT beat the tar out of it and junk it . Serious inquires only , I say . Praying it gets saved and restored to a acceptable repaired state , at least . The pop rivet patch work repair is shameful . This jeep deserves better . If you guys don't want it , please make sure it goes to a good home .

Good to know! I am more of a TJ/LJ/XJ guy and didn't have any documents to check on this pile, so I went with what was told to us by the previous owner.

Definitely a 76 or later.. the slant of that windshield is further back. 74 is straighter up.

The second number on the Vin is the year I think you said 6 if so it is a 76. The trim and color code numbers are above the Vin. The trans is a 3 speed T-150 tremec. The Transfer is a Dana 20. The rear end is likewise a 20 with a 2 piece axle. The front end is the Dana 30. You know it is prior to a 77 because the air intake vent on top of the cowing is flush not raised. The engine appears to be a 232 cu. in. Could be a 258 but I doubt it. The Vin will indicate correct engine. There is a code by the distributer that gives engine birthday. Not the Jeep just the engine. There is a code above oil filter that tell if there are factory over or undersized bearings during manufacturing. The oil pan skid plate is factory. Lotta rust there. But some guys will fix up worse. The Jeep with 32 in tires will run 70 mph interstate. This appears as a 2730 lb. jeep base model. Gross weight is 3750 lb.. Northern salt Jeep lotta rust. frame repair is a given. Be sure to put some oil in cylinders prior to turn over. Check oil in pan too. Turn over manually and watch valve rockets for lube before starting. Many a good engine on KZfaq is ruined by improper starting before it lubes. These engines were weak but they are very tough. If taken care of 250,000 miles before any smoke is normal. The ignition module is mounted under the data tag on the fender. The Jeep you have has an aftermarket distributer? It may have electronics like the chevy's. The carburetor is a Carter 7230s. 1 bl. Not sure that is correct it has a gas line from the canister beside the fuel input line on the bowl. 76 was first year of the War on America Motors by the EPA which lead to the death of the CJ 5 in 1986. Pollution crap which created a far worse problem than it ever solved. The horrible engineering around the Calf. Models were bad. The 49 state models did not have a Cat. See if the Sticker on the front above the passage headlight says Low Altitude if so it is most likely a 49 state model. Also the timing and idle speed are different on the low altitude 49 state models. The idle circuit in these Carters are trouble. Filter the fuel more than the factory Filters. The pump in these carbs has a ball bearing valve in the top pump cover not shown or covered by the repair rebuild itself that will stick open or get trash and not close causing the fuel to drain from the bowel over night. Remove the top pump housing and the the metal plug on the top housing. Careful not to lose bearing. Clean and put bearing back in. Tap the bearing slightly with a brass rod or small bolt to reseat the bearing so it will seal into the seat. Do not tap to hard or it may stick into seat. Replace the plug. Blow through the input an output holes to verify valve is working. Then finish rebuilding carb. Some one will rebuild this Jeep. It will need a lotta work and money. If done well as a stock CJ 5 the Dana 20 and drive train are fine. I ran them over 250,000 miles on and off road. Jeep did write the book. The 5 is narrower and shorter, although there was a few inches in length add around this time to them, this is good. They get between trees and maneuver better off road. I pulled several Trucks and larger vehicles out with the 5's. They don't need as much height because they are shorter. Also you can put 1 wheel in a rut and 1 on the middle hump and get between banks easier. The size is excellent in the 5. Even better than a 7 off road. Good Luck. Old Jeeps Never Die. I owned 3 that I didnt keep. To far gone in 1976 to rebuild. We purchased a 78 Sun Orange CJ 5 in. 77. As a caver I used the jeep as a dialy driver and on week ends Off Road mostly in Tennessee. As an NSS caver myself and others put a lot of miles on that jeep. After 265,000 miles in 1884 I pulled a car out of the ditch in a snow. I didnt know the front drive shaft caught the protection plate on the oil pan. Broke Motor mount. It ripped the spot welds a bit and by the time I got home I spun some rod bearings. No oil will do that. I put a 258 from a AM car in it and drove it a few months more. Needed a truck so I traded it. My wife and kids cried like babied. Jeeps are unlike any other vehicles. They are special. I have another 78 now I am rebuilding some. Nothing like a jeep. The little 5 is a work horse and never failed me. I stuck a few times. Scared the Heck out of my wife climbing road cuts and logging roads.

All correct except, if I remember correctly, CJ's went to a Dana 27 in the front for '76 and later; the intermediates ('72-'75) had the Dana 30. Or is it the other way around?

You are lucky I'm trying to build a 73 CJ5 and it needs a ton of work I have a 360 cubic inch V8 in it and it needs a whole body on it and needs it's frame fixed and I can't find parts for it sadly and when I do I can't afford the parts so yeah lucky

Good luck on the project. The best advice I have ever been given when faced with a major build is, "do ONE little thing on it every day." Doesn't need to be major, just something.

The Jeep is cool. It just needs repair and replacing parts. The Fiat 500 are very common and overpriced car in my country. The Jeep is just "make it start, drive, stop and the lights to work" Dont bother repainting it, it looks better like that, just water hose it.

Old Jeeps may not make a 100% come back, but often become multiple Jeeps. This one did just that.
I made this 1977 Jeep CJ5 run after it sat for 14 years!
