Lightbulb moment.
Midst is an audio drama in which three mischievous narrators spin a surreal, reality-bending, sci-fantasy space western about a crotchety outlaw, a struggling cultist, and a diabolical bastard making awful decisions in a world on the edge of disaster.

The most sickening part of all this is that Loxlee probably did all that completely legally within the Trust. He knew what he was doing was wrong, and that he was taking advantage of Lark's mother, but instead of feeling literally any guilt or remorse about it, he just deducted an inconsequential amount of Valor from his account and thought that made everything right.

@@anorak8934 The creators of Midst call The Trust bureaucracy horror for good reason. Good horror takes something bad in our world and exaggerates to horrific proportions, puts it center stage. Each character is a reflection of how we deal with it. Lark rebled and rejected the whole system, went to live in the wild, free from the system but alone. Phineas is caught in the system. Trying his best to do the right thing in a system that demands he do the wrong thing and is eventually rejected by the system itself, because of his desperation to be a part of it.. Moc Weepe is the slick lier. Working the rules to cheat the system, thinking he's so smart. Until he is forced to see that it's so much bigger and more insidious than he could ever have thought. Now become a puppet of the system he thought he could control.

Self-fulfilling prophecies are always juicy. There was this other story I read where a fortune-teller made a prophecy foretelling danger entering a rival's path (the idea being that he would fall to that danger, or that the augur would claim victory while the rival was occupied), but failing to recognize that the quickest path to make that calamity occur was via his own death.

I love how all of this pretty much shows that no matter how complex the Valor-Caenum system is, it's still very much flawed and it will never be perfect. I mean, babies racking up Caenum? Indebted in a way they can't repay because they were rescued from somewhere they didn't choose to be? Notaries having to do all the work of calculating people's Valor with which the information may be untrue or incomplete? That's not good at all.

Dang, that is some major lore drop. Phineas's story was heavily implied, but the daily tests and bills was just ouch. Lark's story shed's (fold-safe) light on her motivations for the killing. Even more sickening is the fact that people were so upset about the death of the oh-so illustrious Loxley that none of them stopped to consider that the killer's mother was the last person he was willingly around and went missing the same day. Or maybe the workers did bring it up but were dismissed. (Is it wrong that I'm curious what the fold in those vats did to her body? Would she have melted or turned to stone?)

A bit weird, I would assume a place in the Highest Light would have all kinds of surveillance, mechanical or otherwise. That they got into Phineas' apartment when there's no reason to assume him dead almost feels like a trap to be sprung.
@kingskelett6265
@kingskelett6265 2 ай бұрын
That is true. But either they lack any recognition software, afterall I doubt they would have someone checking every single camera, or his disguise is actually working. Honestly though, I also have the feeling that the reason for lacking surveillance (if it is lacking which i think it is) might just be because they don't feel the need to. The problem with such big powerful systems is that they can become very arrogant and feel untouchable. Especially with their valour-kainum (however you spell it) thing being a usually usable deterent. Do something bad and you risk going into debt.

@@kingskelett6265 Again, there are no video cameras. The highest forms of recording technology we’ve seen are teletherics (radio) and the Incendiary Imaging Device (camera). And the Imaging device was a fairly recent invention. It was so easy because there is no video surveillance.

Keep in mind that even with the ridiculous fantasy mechanics happening here, it's meant to be technologically set roughly somewhere around the Industrial Age. Their idea of a 'camera' at the grand gala is extremely close to what the original cameras used to be - a questionably contained explosion that seared onto a plate. There's no surveillance because there's no such thing as film as of yet.
