Foundation Season 2 Episode 1 Breakdown. An in-depth recap and review of S02E01 “In Seldon’s Shadow” with the ending explained. Please Subscribe 👉 bit.ly/PetePeppers
Foundation is back for Season 2 on Apple TV+. In Episode 1 we see that the Cleons are drifting apart genetically and Brother Day (Lee Pace) is planning on marrying Queen Sareth (Ella-Rae Smith) to produce an heir. This will be the end of the Genetic Dynasty and the plan has created tension between Day, Brother Dawn (Cassian Bilton), and Brother Dusk (Terrence Mann). He has also started sharing his bed with Demerzel (Laura Birn) and is almost assassinated in his chambers.
In the Season 2 premiere Gaal Dornick (Lou Llobell), and Salvor Hardin (Leah Harvey) are stuck on Synnax. Things are uneasy because Gaal had no idea she was a mother and Salvor is extremely eager to build a relationship based on the bond she imagines that exists between them. The two characters are outliers and are naturally complementary but it will take time for them to get to know each other.
Hari Seldon’s (Jared Harris) consciousness is along for the ride and he will likely play a role in Gaal and Salvor’s stories. We were introduced to Yanna Seldon (Nimrat Kaur) a new character from his past that he refers to as the love of his life.

In Seldon’s Shadow
Hari finds himself trapped in a mysterious prison. An assassination attempt leaves Day shaken. Gaal and Salvor devise an escape plan.
Apple TV+ released Foundation season 2 on July 14, 2023. They've released the Official Trailer for the new season which we break down in this video. The show is an adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s Foundation book series.
More than a century after the season one finale, tension mounts throughout the galaxy in “Foundation” season two. As the Cleons unravel, a vengeful queen plots to destroy Empire from within. Hari, Gaal and Salvor discover a colony of Mentalics with psionic abilities that threaten to alter psychohistory itself. The Foundation has entered its religious phase, promulgating the Church of Seldon throughout the Outer Reach and inciting the Second Crisis: war with Empire. The monumental adaptation of “Foundation” chronicles the stories of four crucial individuals transcending space and time as they overcome deadly crises, shifting loyalties and complicated relationships that will ultimately determine the fate of humanity.

This was definitely a promising start for Season 2. Curious to see where Gaal and Salvor go next, and how things are developing on Terminus. Sareth seems like a good way to make things even more difficult for the Genetic Dynasty and it will be interesting to see how Demerzel receives her. Let me know what you think.

I more curious about Gaal's ever changing accent...one minute it's New Zealand the next South African and then finally plummy posh British which must be her/their natural accent. Very poor casting.

It's actually fascinating that South African + London accent = New Zealand accent. But yeah nah I think the actress has done a great job considering it's her first big acting gig, and only her fourth overall. Her weird accent in the narration repeatedly reestablishes how far removed these humans are meant to be from us, which I like. Also props for calling her they/them, but it is Salvors actor that in Enby. Appreciate the effort though, cheers for that.

@@lucycarr6065 Her accent changes from scene to scene that my friend is just poor acting. Every other characters' accents in the movie such as Salvor, Hari, Empire etc remain constant, hers does not. So it has nothing to do with the future setting merely her limited acting ability.

@@The_Reality_Filter It does remain consistent though because it's just her natural accent, which sounds weird because she grew up in different places. Personally I find Salvors fake American accent far more jarring than Gaals natural accent.

Possible spoiler alert....Hey there Pete -- True to my word, I m not following the series. I've chosen instead to follow your synopses, and I'm glad I went in this direction. You question those things I would question, so kudos! I do miss the exquisite cinematography . I'm reaching out to you here so as not to lay out a storyline from the books, which may - or may not - add up to a spoiler alert. I don't know how far people go inside the various threads that open within a given set of replies, so here's hoping.... I wanted to make one comment about the teacher that Hari had as a child. There were 3 additional brooks written by three other SF writers of notable repute. In one, we learn that the robot that would become Dors was in her first iteration the one teacher in Harry's childhood that supported and encouraged Hari's math skills, and pointed him (very specifically) towards developing psychohistory starting from a very young age. I think this is what you are seeing inside of the cube when Harry is talking to his teacher - I certainly hope so. There are several twists and turns in how psychohistory comes to Hari, how he is selected to become the mathematician that he becomes, and more about Dors to be learned. This thread is seamless in the books. Here I'll stop. These tiny threadlets in the series gives me hope that Goyer may start addressing the role of robots in the Foundation throughout all the books,and if I ever see you identifying this theme, I'll renew my subscription and watch the series. Thank you for your wonderful reportage!!

I think there is a ton of subtext in season one that Cleon I and the Demrezel were in love. That would be why he saved her and kept here true identity a secret. She even stated to Cleon I in flashback, "we could revisit the idea of taking a wife." Which he rejects as an unthinkable act since she is his true love. The whole scene played like their relationship was much different than advisor or family member. I think he created the genetic dynasty not just so he could be a steadfast ruler forever (instead of rolling dice with random people where some could be good, while others would inevitably be terrible and destroy what he had built), but so he could also be with his love forever (after a fashion) and she with him. She even stated in a very melancholy way to Brother Night, "...you always leave me." Demerzel gets to spend eternity with the Man she loves. She also has an emotional break after what she does in the finale. Further demonstrating how much she cares for each Cleon and her capacity for emotions, including Love.

My theory is that the assassins were never supposed to kill Cleon XVII, but rather come close to killing him as to create suspicion among the brothers. This plot would help the queen get rid of those who are opposed to the marriage and secure her own ambitions in the long run.

Plots within plots within plots! This is why I LOVE this Show! Interesting theory nonetheless, but I'm still very cautious about Demerzel! This is a powerful being, who's been pivotal in evolution of Empire, having served Cleon the First way back when. Her motives are still very much unclear and, right before the assassination attempt, she did appear to lull Cleon into a false sense of security... But then, on second viewing, she did tell him to open his eyes, right before the attack... I think that her role in all of this is key... As the last known surviving robot in the galaxy, what is it that she actually wants? But yes, this season has kicked off well! And now that the foundation has already been set in season one, excuse the pun! I'm hoping to witness a much more grounded season two, from which this complex story can develop further! This show is High Sci-Fi at it's Best!!!

The small changes in the clones hairstyles to their behavior really emphasizes just how much the DNA changes and the impact of knowing they are no longer "pure" copies have impacted them collectively. Returning to DNA mixing will be interesting, and I wonder about the genetics aspect of the adulterations. The assassins-the clones threw suspicion on his new bride-to-be, which includes them. I don't know why, but I still think Demerzel has something to do with the adulterations and the attempted assassination. Nothing concrete, and I'm thinking that may come from the knowledge of the books perhaps. Foundation is a potential suspect, because Seldon did point them towards Empire right before he disappeared again. Lastly, Gaal and Salvor-my favorite character interaction. I love them both, but the viewer really has to put themselves into Gaal's shoes to really figure out everything. For Gaal, it was only two days ago that Raysch killed Seldon. A day ago that she viewed Raych's murder, and today she is told that she has a daughter who is chronologically older than her. I think I can see how the Mule comes about, and I'm excited to see how they bring it about.

I can't quite figure out Dermezel, either. She seems to have another purpose that predates Empire, and I'm wondering if she understands psycho-history, too. If Tranter is going to be brought down by the emotional responses of Empire, then it makes sense that she interferes in brother Day's decision to marry. I'm guessing that Dermezel is a vehicle for other consciousnesseses, in the same way that Harry is meeting other minds inside the vault. More than one consciousness might explain how she compartmentalizes her contradictory roles of "mother" or "partner". But more than anything else, given her capabilities, I can't believe that she hasn't always been fully aware of Hari's plan and calculated her own plan in response.

The opening scene of Day having intercourse with Demerzel makes me think of the play Oedipus Rex. Similar to Oedipus, Day is having sex with his "mother" figure, one who changed his diapers as a baby. The fact that one of the assassins is revealed to have no eyes alludes to the end of the play where Oedipus gouges his eyes out in despair when he realized he killed his father and bedded his own mother. The previous season showed Day trying to break through the glass holding Cleon I, in essence, his "father", trying to destroy him just like Oedipus killed his own father. And by attempting his own biological heir with the new queen, Day will break the line of genetics ("killing" his own father in the form of Cleon I) and most likely bring facilitate bringing down the empire. The name Oedipus also refers to his swollen foot due to being pinned by his own father, Laius, after hearing the prophecy that he would die by the hands of his son. I think the corrupted genetics of the Cleon dynasty is the "swollen foot". Just my 2 cents...

I have read a lot of comments about Lee Pace's big scenes, as well as the brilliant FX/CGI that Goyer uses to create the awe inspiring scenes that we have all come to love - me included in that "we"! Yes, I have been known to call it the "StarWarsification" of SF (where, ironically, even George Lucas was imprinted by Asimov's work in his creation of C3PO, modeled precisely on one of Asimov's most important robots), since it has ,truthfully, become formulaic. To be entertained is why we all follow all of this, and it never seems to fail us - me included in that "us". But there is the matter of Jared Harris that I have now turned my attention to,and I hope that others will agree with my assessment (before episode 2 airs tomorrow m- sorry this is so late!). As an actor, his work is simply stunning, and I don't know why it has been overlooked. In his portrayal of a trapped man trying so hard not to go insane (shot in black and white -- kudos Goyer!!) I would ask: has he ever done Shakespeare? If not, he should. If anyone knows if he has, please let me know. I know that he and Lee Pace worked together in Spielberg's "Lincoln". In an interview, Lee Pace said he sought Jared Harris out to learn more about the art of acting. Right on, Lee! Right on!

It's been a very long time since I read all the Foundation and Robot short stories and novels, but one of the things that impressed me about them was how Asimov was able to tie together the two different story lines into a consistent and compelling narrative that ultimately transcended both. However, this left a lot of gaps in the development of the integrating plot threads, such as how the Second Foundation and Gaia were established and evolved, and the role of the Zeroth-Law-of-Robotics-endowed humaniform robots in human society once all of humanity left the Earth in today's not-too-distant future. I like how the Foundation series on Apple TV is trying to emphasize and expand on these threads from the very beginning, rather than focusing on them more as ingenious afterthoughts as it seemed Asimov did. This might be a bit jarring for people who watch the TV series after reading all the books, but I'm optimistic that it will eventually make sense and is something that the overall story arch really needs. It makes me wonder how Asimov might have rewritten the stories if he could have started again to recreate them all as an integrated whole from scratch.

I agree with your sense of things - how Asimov was able to marry so many disjointed stories into some sort of coherency boggles my mind. When I recommend the books I suggest starting with the three 1950's gumshoe murder mysteries (think Columbo), which introduce us to the robot characters that will play such an important role in the Foundation Books. These were originally written as short serialized stories for SF magazines, so they may seem a little disjointed at times. But the satisfaction remains. Yes, there are many gaps in the storylines, but I like to think that had Asimov lived longer he would have filled in those gaps (eventually).(there is a huge gap of 1000 years in the story line that I'm sure could be mined for a good SF read). The three books that were written by 3 SF writers with the approval of the Asimov estate tried to fill in some of those gaps, but .... While I am critical of the Apple series on many levels, I do credit Goyer for finding backstory information - sometimes from just one sentence that is found in the books. I'm not sure how he will end the series, as the entire Foundation storyline is predicated on one character's greater plan. I know Goyer is not allowed to use the character in name or body, so while I follow the series via Pete's synopses, I am skeptical of how this will all play out.

@@marijapokrivac1582 It's great that you've started reading the Foundation books! However, don't get your hopes up too high that these books will quickly shed light on some of the more opaque plot elements in the Apple TV series. Some things like Gaia and the role of the robots in the Foundation time period are barely mentioned until you get quite far beyond the original three books. Also, it might also help to read the Robot series and the Galactic Empire series by Asimov to gain further insight. Even so, the Apple TV series is interpolating lines between points that don't really have much in the way of concrete links in any of the books. But, if you're like me, the books will help you appreciate the thought processes of the writers while they were bridging the gaps in the overarching story line to make everything fit into a workable TV format. Enjoy!

While it looks like the clones have Demerzel, it's more like Demerzel has the clones. She created the whole system of the genetic dynasty - if you remember well from the 1st season. She compares to a "robot" as a nuclear submarine to a stone axe, she is not biological, but alive in every other sense and it seems she is well equipped (not like Barbie if you know what I mean). It's a simplification to see her as a mother figure, she is every kind of figure. She acts like a general partner of the empire, so the relationship makes sense to me.
@corriemayo2715
@corriemayo2715 9 ай бұрын
YES!. What i want to know is what her goals are now, that the genetic dynasty can no longer be. Is she now dedicated to the supremacy of the Galactic Empire as a whole or something more nuanced? Did she show emotional distress last season (the face pulling) because killing that Dawn got thru to an emotional center that we didn‘t think she had/was capable of?? Could Demerzel mind be a copy of the woman who birthed the 1st Cleon and has carried that emotional connection throughout the centuries as an sentient android

Good first episode, although the first Cleon scene was a bit jarring. But then again, it's something I've been looking forward to: The subtle (or not so subtle) differences in the varying personas of the individual Cleon clones over the centuries and how the actors would portray them. Still, the robot mother figure also "providing" such other "services", seemed a bit much. At first I thought it could be some kind of dream sequence, especially when the assassins entered and inflicted real damage. But man do they need to improve palace security. As for the audacious Queen of Cloud Kingdom, it seems a bit odd that in a centuries-old cloned dynasty of the Galactic Empire taking a wife and possibly producing a natural heir would be allowed. Are we to assume that such a potential heir would only play a role in Cloud Kingdom? Political motivations may obviously be found in the ongoing gradual decline of the empire but it certainly comes with existential risks. The plotting scene of Day, Dawn, and Dusk with Dermerzel after they found the imperial officer from Season 1 was a personal highlight. The other storylines (Gaal/Salvor's as well as Hari's) are still less interesting to me. But let's see where all this will go.

I keep coming back to who wanted to change the genetic makeup of Empire over time. I think that Demrezel was involved in that in some way and she killed Dawn to push any suspicion away from her, but it is also why she grieved and tore her face afterwards. I think she was trying in her own way to make Empire better, by over time shifting his personality - to rid him of the weaknesses which would promote the fall of the empire.

1) Good point on the "open your eyes", it actually made me think the whole fight was some dream-like sequence at first, because of how weird it happened. And like no soldier came. It was a bit unreal 2) "If people are aware of the prophecy, then it might change" - well, didn't Hari already shared that in this trial? And if the prophecy is end of human race, wouldn't trying to change it a good idea? :D 3) The marriage: I really need much more explanation on it. What, after 17 generations this one guy decides to marry and have his kid take over his place and just end the genetic dynasty? Sorry what? :D I assumed he could marry, but the next in line would still be the next Cleon. If it becomes something else, I would like to see some more arguments as for why

Depends on what you like. I think the first season was inconsistent but also huge and ambitious and entertaining. This episode showed they have an awareness of what didn't work as well and made some smart choices. If you like big sci-fi I'd say watch the first two episodes of the first season and see if it grabs you, it's worth it for the visuals alone. It's a massive story so there's potential for the show to go on for a long time. It seems to be heading in the right direction. You mentioned Silo which is more to my tastes and I think had a much stronger first season. But the scale and concepts are completely different to the point that I can see where Foundation might be preferable to slightly different tastes.

If you're looking for a fresh new distant-future space-travel sci-fi show with awesome visual effects and score, then Foundation is for you. But if you're an orthodox reader-fan of the original novels by Isaac Asimov, you may not like this adaption straying from some of the source material which has long been known as hard to adapt to screen.

Foundation is a 6 out of 10. Don't expect too much; despite its budget and source material it falls short on so many areas. But if you don't care about having a coherent plot or interesting characters, and if you really like CGI and Lee Pace, it could be a 9 out of 10.
