We are excited to continue America’s Founding Families, a series of conversations exploring the families that helped create and shape America.
Next up is the Lee family of Virginia. From Richard, Francis, and "Light-Horse" Harry Lee and their impact on the American Revolution to their cousin and son Robert E. Lee who served the U.S. Army with distinction for 32 years but fought against it in the Civil War, Tom Hand, @americanacorner, and Owen Lanier, @the.civil.war.files, explore the Lee’s family legacy throughout the generations.

Interesting. I’m descended from the immigrant Richard Lee through the Ditchley Lees. Ironically, I joined the military to escape middle class and also became a civil engineer.

My Grandmother was a Lee. I have several Lee ancestors. Lee's mother was Anne Hill Carter of Shirley. People think that these families had money. Money was scarce. Their wealth was in slaves, furniture, land and other commodities. Back then states were your homes. There wasn't really a notion of patriotism as we have it today. Lee felt that his allegiance was to his home state, Virginia. Who knows what kind of decision would we make.

The States are still our Nations if we have the good sense to claim our birthrights as American State Nationals, and shed our U.S. citizen identification, which keeps your chained to the 'corporation' known as the U.S. government as their chattel. When we claim our birthrights, we become master of the government we created. Of course, they will never tell you that, lest you set yourself free.

You should visit Shirley Plantation in Charles City, Virginia. Perhaps you already have? If so, you have a relative there named Charles Carter. He, too, is a descendent of the Lee Family.

So we have some off the same lines that come before Lee and Ludwell. The first Lee to come to USA married a Hancock , and that started the Lee family in colonial times !! Cool stuff. We are related way back there !!!

@@proquciprodesse210 That is cool. I don't know a whole lot about the Lees in England. I know of the split between Richard and John. I know about Humphrey and his children, 13 of them. But when the split between Richard and John happened, and Richard came to the US, that's what I focused on due to I am in the US. I do know John's line leads to Christopher Lee, the late actor, whom I did get to meet a few times when I was much younger. Now I have some information for Ginette Lee. She did some posts about the lineage that clarified some stuff for me.

My ancestor was a colonel serving under lighthorse harry. They were also a big cavalry family. After the revolution he moved to Kentucky and more or less founded the horse racing industry. His kids went to west point and became cavalry generals in the civil war. At the battle of Gettysburg, one of them was the commanding officer squaring off against Robert e Lee.

They were basically American aristocrats! It's interesting how so many fortunes were lost in our countries history. These were huge farms & plantations compared to today. But not many survived.
