I fell in love with Nakaya's Dorsal Fin v.2s and managed to get my paws on a few of them before the unfortunate earthquake in Japan which stopped production.

E vs W. Both make great fps. Personal opinion is that I have found that brands like Pilot and Sailor have really tight QC control. I have never experienced dry nibs, hard starts, flow issues

That they do, Santini is one of my favourite western brands. Superb pens. But there’s something about Asian brands that’s undeniably cool.

Nice video Andrew. Sadly, Sailor no longer produces special nibs like the King Cobra. Zoom and Naginata-togi are still available more or less. The 21k nib is also, sadly, seemingly ruining Sailor’s financials as the price of gold is sky rocketing. Nakaya does the best nib tuning, truly superlative and essentially free as you say. Tohma learned nib making from Kubo and Tohma is pretty much pre sold for over a year. Kubo is ever so slightly more “available” but works best if you are in Japan to order in person. Tianzi is a great entry into urushi pens and they write very well too. Pilot has, in my opinion, industry leading nib quality control and now offer the widest array of nib tipping options of anyone. Of course, the Namiki brand is industry leading urushi and maki-e. Pilot is really the 800 lb gorilla but a nice one and us enthusiasts are lucky that Pilot’s financial success has very little to do with fine writing, yet, as a company they care about it deeply.

I’m not exactly the most unbiased person here, since I’m thoroughly in the camp of Japanese pens, and only own 2 steel nibbed Lamy pens. The main reason I bought gold nibbed Japanese pens (Pilot Elite 95s and Custom Heritage 92; and Sailor Pro Gear 21k standard model) over western pens is that other than the Lamy 2000, most of those equivalently priced German, Italian and French pens are steel nibbed instead. For those who appreciate western sizes and nib tuning, I actually recommend Pilot 14k nib pens. They are usually quite smooth and wet flowing, and fine-medium and medium sizes are just about the same width as Western fines and mediums, respectively. While Pilots and Sailors might be a little less exciting to look at than European pens, they are very reliable, competitively priced pens.

One of the biggest challenges that European companies face, is the cost of manufacturing is usually much higher! Especially, considering that brands like Leonardo has quite small outfits. Material costs are also much higher as well, where you might find sailor and pilot use injection moulded pellets, companies in the west tend to favour acrylics which although aren’t that expensive, do raise the cost somewhat. However, I do completely agree manufacturing costs in Europe versus what you have in Japan and other Asian countries is significantly different.

Some lovely pens. I’m dreaming of that Tamenuri pen. So elegant. East/ West seems a bit hard not to overgeneralize. So much depends 😅n the company and price point. And no mention of Indian pens I’ll look forward to your point in part II.

No mention of Indian Pens, partly because my experience of them is very little. I do own a ranga giant 9b, but I’m afraid that’s my only experience! Tamenuri is perhaps the pinnacle of skill level and it’s certainly my favourite urushi technique outside of Maki-e. Are you looking for Tamenuri from any particular maker? And you’re absolutely right about the difficulty in over generalising. Trying to keep content to a certain length, does mean one has to sacrifice. But perhaps I’ll delve deeper into some specific companies over time if that’s of interest?

@@PenFriends I like ebonite pens, and Ranga and a few companies still make lovely lathe-turned pens... but at a more affordable price-point. I love tamenuri, but don't quite get other more wild forms of maki-e. I love Japanese food, but like izakaya food over Kyoto fancy ryotei cuisine. It's cool that you can appreciate and afford maki-e. There are so many traditional crafts. I understand your point is to keep it light and presentable to larger people, but I think the joy is in finding unique creations that meet your taste (and budget). Even generalizing Japanese pens is tough as each company has some differences, but you are right that the excellence in the nib is the hallmark of Japanese pens, even at the entry level offerings, which is very impressive. I think you are correct about the importance of good EF nibs for writing kanji, but I think it also shows Japan's long history of steel-work and TQM and pride of manufacturing. Have a good weekend.
