I think the miniature effect is due to the fact that we are accustomed to see pictures and videos of toys with macro lenses or anyway at macro distances where the background is very out of focus, so when we see a similar ratio of in focus and out of focus obtained with a tilt adapter our brain associates it to the toys.

7:49 In portrait-shots long teles tend to emphesise background-structures. With longer teles you have more seperation between your camera and the model. This minimises blur. And longer teles bring the background-structures closer, so they get more pronounce.

I like tilting and shifting lenses. It's necessary to make a lot of test, but when you begin to understand the mysteries of the Scheimpflug rules, the results are amazing. I use genuine T/S lenses, and adapters also, on MFT, FF, and MF cameras. One of the nicest result is the possibility to choose by tilting which part of the image will be sharp in a portrait, or to modify the perspective in landscape photography by shifting. You can also modify the DOF.... I love your video which are full of informations, and because you are very understandable for a nonenglish speaker! Thanks

I agree with the miniatures effect being due to very limited zone of sharp focus. I own the Lensbaby which is a lens attached to a tilt base. I love it but agree that it needs to be used sparingly with suitable subjects.

I use flektogon 35 on m4/3 body for street and for getting vintage mood into photos, it is 70 mm for me but I generaly like longer lenses

Tilt adapters are great. The toy effect works when you look down on the scene with plane of focus running across the image. Ita comes about because when you try to take a photo of toys up close you end up looking down onto the toys so they the plane of focus a only cuts across some of the toys and gives a shallow depth of field similar to using the tilt lens from above.

The Kamlan 50mm f/1.1 is also available for Canon EF-M. It's one of my favorite lenses- though there is a Mark II version out now that I need to try.

9:54 This kind of image is a bit like the diorama effect in the Olympus OMD EM10II art filters. Maybe it fools the eye into perceiving there is very low depth of field, which makes you think that objects are close by and very small, like model toys.

Another great video, informative and entertaining. You asked why the tilt lens made objects look like toys. My first DSLR could simulate this and actually called it Toy scene mode. I think it is because we know how things should look even if we can't explain it. If we photograph a street scene full of cars, we have an expectation of how quickly the focussed area will fall out of focus on either side of the subject. If you change that to fall off more rapidly then we know that this is usually the result of photographing something much smaller and from closer to. What could be smaller than cars? Toy cars. I hope this is right as it is just a guess. Here's hoping someone else replies who actually knows. Tim

I know that you're fond of your Flektogon 35mm f2.4 but how does it compare with the CZJ 35mm f2.4 Praktica mount version? I've just picked up a copy in the PK mount for half the cost of the Flek and it seems fine. Is there a difference or is it just the must have for the Flektogon name? Liked the write up on the tilt adapter. I have the Samyang 24mm f3.5 TS in my Sony a7rii and it's great fun.

The reason tilt lenses/adapters give the appearance of models is that it causes the straighter lines to look vertical/horizontal where they would be slightly angled in a normal lens, and models, being as small as items usually seen as distance, have the same effect.

So, I found out the hard way that I cannot adapt Canon FD lenses to my EOS 5D Classic without a more pricey correcting adapter; but, I would like to know if screw-mount lenses would be any different, such as M43 or M42, etc. Do you have some advice concerning this? I think the reason for the tilt model feel is obviously the sallow dof feel, that we mainly see in macro photography.

I have a similar tilt adapter and it sure is great fun. Just like with your adapter it has max 8° tilt. But shouldn't the scale be from 0 to 8 rather than from 1 to 8? :D And arent't the scale also upside down and the position should be zero when there's no tilt? :D Haha, oh man. But great fun.

Try the Auton Chinon F1.7 55mm. The Bokeh is unique.

The Leica 35mm Elmarit also produces a nice bokeh at 2.8.

About this tilt adapter. From M42 to what mount ?

I can attest to the Zuiko 50mm 1.4, I have the later MC version and it really does produce dreamy images on my A7III. The characteristics are very different from modern lenses and its a joy to use. Another lens I have that I can speak to is the Helios 44. I have the Helios 44m-7 version from the early 90's and it swirls the background beautifully, but I noticed it's difficult for portraits unless you have your subjects face in the dead center because the swirl will overlap the face in any other position. Which is where my Zuiko comes in handy. It's much more versatile than the Helios.

You know.... if I am shooting manual focus I use red focus peaking and a black and white film simulation. Black and white screen with red focus peaking. I use a Fujifilm camera.

There is always a depth of field problem when photographing models that can't normally happen with the real thing, when you do create it, it gives the subject that appearance you only see with models.

10:12 Everything looks like toys, becaus there is much more out of focus. This can only be done in closeups, normally.

I think the "model effect" is because it tricks your brain by changing virtualy the DOF. Let's take a "car #1" that is real size and a "car #2" that is the miniature version of number 1. If the car number 1 is pretty far from your eyes and the car number 2 is close enough then they'll both look almost the same "size" within your field of view. Anyway you perfectly know the number 1 is real because the large DOF tells you it is far away : the car and everything around is neat. And for the same reason you know the number 2 is a miniature taht is close to you because the shallow DOF tells you so : the car is neat but everything around is blury. With the tilt effect, you see the distant car number 1 with the same amount of blur as you should have with car number 2. So your brain believes your looking at car number 2.

I'm surprised that you didn't include a 135mm (either common 2.8 or excotic like 2.5) Or a Jupiter 9 for that matter at 85mm f2.

I can't help but think that bokeh is an overrated characteristic. I don't think I recall term ever being used before the late 1990's.
