A brief overview of four popular generators. For the complete review, see the June 2012 issue of QST magazine.

Wonder if the RFI be further reduced if the green "grounding" wire were run thru the choke filter and a ground rod connected to the "floating" grounding stud on the front panel? Am guessing the "neutral" terminal of receptacle is also floating and not bonded to ground as would be in an AC main panel box.

I thought this was going to be a review of the 4 generators like the article in the QST magazine. You state the specs and some features of the generators but not actually reviewing each generator in this video. From the article in the magazine, i think the Honda unit seems the best. It would have been nice to hear how each one sounds in this video and how each respond to different loads. Like your statement this is a real brief overview.

Very interesting... so, if the generator, at some distance from the FD site, is using a very short cord to a battery charger while charging up a battery, would the noise generated be negligable? Is it mainly the 100' extension cord, as shown in the video, that radiates the noise? Is there an even better filter system to more thoroughly eliminate the noise?

Years ago I used a Honda EU2000i generator at several Field Day events, and one year on the second day the entire FD site was on my generator alone. I used a 50' contractor cable fed into an APC UPS, and we had no RFI at all. The generator wasn't grounded either. Now I have a Yamaha EF2000 and I want to test it with my IC-7000 to see if it generates any RFI.

How about some detailed information about the EMI filter he described.

ARRLHQ Hey Bob, looks like my comment got messed up with the google+ integration. Did you have the generators grounded when you did this test? I use a Corcom FC filter and 6 type 31 ferrites in series with my inverter grounded. RF is pretty much S1 or non existent. Ungrounding the inverter caused the common mode noise to return, though not as bad compared to if the filters were absent.

Bob, are all brands of inverter-type generators equal in RFI emissions? Which one is best? TNX de KT1R Lou in WV

Okay my field day group has 'experimented' for a few years with generators and filters. The only non- RF noise solutions are Honda EU2000i or a conventional generator (the audio noise is almost as bad as the RF noise on the other non-Honda generator. I made several attempts at filters. The Generac I own I put ferite beads even inside with no help, its actually turned into a joke about the noise it creates. Didn't use ground as our site is on solid lava rock. One new guy has Honda, no problemo. 73s

Check out smart power filters and ESP power surge protector and filters. Used on ebay about $20.00 retail price $100.00 plus. We have been using them in the copier industry since the 1990's. Every ham should be using them
