An artist must be the trend, not follow it. RUnning after trends distorts the spirit. There is more joy and money in being oneself. The next question is how to match my joy with someone who loves it, too. Its no different than finding a life-partner, or a few friends to play bridge or hockey.

Thank you for addressing the fourth point Ellen. Especially your thoughts on NOT pricing too low. One other thought I had watching this - there is a difference between how we value / price original artwork, versus prints. I think the buying trigger for original art is much, much more an emotional dynamic than a product comparison dynamic. When someone “loves” one of our pieces, its value to them is much greater - great job and thanks again. Bill

Hello Ellen, I recently found your channel and am enjoying it. Good information, thank you! Having been in and around NY's high-end art world for many decades, I will only quibble with the idea of telling artists not to sell too low. There always has been, and likely always will be artists that undersell their work. It's the nature of the beast. You've never heard one attorney tell another "Youi aren't charging enough, you are bringing our market down!" Of course not. Because it is not the nature of that beast, right? Last month I just worked on an auction that brought in over $200 million. So no, Joe Smith selling his canvases for $25 each is not crashing any art market. Not yet. ;-)

I have thousands of prints and some hundreds of originals all water colorI have not sale in years. My art is in FASO some of my art are in the Artist’s Magazine I was the artist of the year in 1986. Things have changed a lot

Hello Ellen, thank you for all your helpful information. I used to be a gallery artist before the internet and then took a long break professionally. Now I’m back learning to be a business person which is the tough part! I’m just a little over a year in. Anyways how is snapseed any better than the tools provided with my iPhone camera? I usually crop, lighten up the photo and maybe saturate a tiny bit. The iPhone camera really gets very close and I don’t need to do much. I just wanted to ask because I looked into the app and didn’t see anything unique and maybe I’m missing something! Thank you

I agree about the shipping, when I see something on eBay for say $15 + $5 and the same thing for $20 I invariably buy the $20 item. Go figure. The bad thing for the buyer though is that, for example, if they buy 5 items they pay 5x the shipping even though in my case (photos in tubes) it would cost the same to ship 5 as it does 1. Maybe that's just a win for me, and to be fair nobody buys 5 prints at a time anyway. OTOH courier shipping overseas is expensive, no way that can be absorbed into a $50 item and just how much can you charge for a 10x8 photo/print? So maybe the free over $X is the only way to go. ugh snapseed is for iphone , .. thats not me. I will have a lot to see if i can find another app. I find the shipping difficult. I live in Australia and i can offer free shipping in my country but not really for the rest of the world .. these are useful tips though..

All the damn auction houses, and all the high end galleries, everybody is trying to sell online. It's insane. Etsy is like small fish.
