Four Reasons to Learn Unreal for Motion Design (even if you know After Effects)

Why bother learning anything in 2024?
Unreal Engine has a new Motion Design Mode, but is it worth learning something new, especially if you already know After Effects and Cinema4D?

It really is quite ridiculous that we can play an entire 3D scene with millions of polygons in real time, but After Effects can't play a simple, single video in real time. That same video, which can be played in real time in VLC 😲

Ikr! I kind of understand where they’re coming from - they have a program with a huge user base and they don’t want to throw the baby out with the bath water. I don’t want to speculate about engineering challenges but it does feel like Adobe has been losing ground for a decade or so.

Awesome video overview! I was a motion designer from 2010 - 2017, and then became a game dev (VR) using unreal engine from 2017-now. Its crazy to see these 2 worlds collide in such a cool way. And so depressing to see how little after effects has evolved since 2010 compared to unreal engine in the same time period.

I love the way you make your videos! They're entertaining, informative, and relaxed. I was fortunate enough during the pandemic to have already spent about two years working with Unreal as part of a project. Back then, I still had an active Cinema4D license, but not anymore. Nowadays, most of my 3D work is done in Unreal. I've found that the path in Unreal is never straightforward, but the results are always very satisfying!

Great video good sir! Thank you for being thorough and showcasing your thoughts from various angles, including the perspective I share of "should I learn yet aNOTHER thing?" I too am in this boat and am quite tempted but am looking for the smoothest journey to avoid some of the growing pains and shortcut to the good stuff. Experimentation is always great but if I can cut down on hours of frustration all the better. Thank you for your contributions so far and I'll stay tuned! Please let me/us know if there have been any channels covering UE5 so far that you'd recommend for general UE5 world building or for mograph on it's own. TY!

this video comes just in the right time. I'll pay attention to the next videos you publish to check if it's worth it learning Unreal in a design perspective. I use Cinema4D + Redshift and TouchDesigner on a daily basis, and now I am wondering if I should go with Houdini or with Unreal. The part of making interactive stuff and things for interactive installations makes Unreal appealing, but the look and style of Houdini + Redshift is great.

I agree about render setup being difficult in Unreal. I spent days trying to figure out why a final render didn't look like the viewport and there were so many gotcha things I needed to click or unclick and it all seemed needlessly difficult. Epic really needs to streamline that part of the workflow because it's a giant pain in the ass

Good info! While it won't help your use cases for continuing to use After Effects, if you're on a Mac, Apple's Motion is far, far closer to realtime than AE for a lot of motion graphics tasks, and for a one-off purchase of US$50 it's a bargain. It does handle vectors and you can use Pixelmator Pro to import complex vector art with every shape separate and editable. But... it's not a compositor and doesn't have a planar tracker, so it's not a complete replacement at all. Looking forward to getting more into Unreal, and thanks for making your template available.

After Effects specializes in motion design while unreal engine does not. People arent going to download UE if it's quadruple the size just for motion graphics. The UI is also another factor. The workflow is also another. Its like trying to use Blender for video editing instead of using Premiere or Davinci Resolve. Its just going to make the process a lot more difficult than it has to be.

Not sure if you started your "deep dive" video on motion graphics in UE yet, but I wanted you to know that if I see one more video showing how to do a keyframeless mograph cloner setup like the one in this video, I'm going to lose my shit. Well, okay not really, lol. But I do hope it shows more practical motion graphics because it seems like the only videos I can find on motion graphics in UE shows this cloner setup. Looking forward to your video.

My passion for learning Unreal Engine 5.x is bigger than anything I have wanted to learn in all my life, but.... The lack of a proper professional pipeline that one can put a track and walk through is extremely difficult to find, and the more "default" way to learn is to look for arbitrary tutorials, and then look for tutorials to trouble shoot all the problems you face.... It's a really bumpy road but totally worth it in the end. Kinda getting sick from After Effects anyway.

Hmm you should be able to see 5.4 preview - in your epic launcher, after you click the + button next to engine versions, it might show you a card with version 5.2.1 or something lower - but next to that number there will be a dropdown arrow. Click that, and you should see the option for 5.4 preview. Then once you install that, you should be able to enable the motion design plugin

Im not a ue fan because of the slugshness to open and the overcomplicated stuff, but i hate AE, theres a serious problem of monopoly with adobe. They have one of the worst software for what people use and stills the most used. I work with it daily and I simply cant get angrier by the stupidity it is to need plugins for every aspect. Gosh, i would love to use davinci resolve for it with a full real 3d thing because of fusion, or blender who has the same advantages, maybe a lesser quality shadows, but overall its incredible what you can do or any other software than being locked in AE.
