A very special shopping culture in Japan every new year's is the buying of fukubukuro or (literally) "lucky bag" in English. Although, some stores call them "happy bags".
Each bag has a set price, but the items inside costs more than 50% of what you paid for. The catch is that you don't know what you'll get until you buy and open the bag. No returns, no exchange, too.
In past years, you can only buy the bag at stores. But since the worldwide bug, many stores opted for online reservations. They then send a message with the dates (about 10 days) to pick them up at the store. I reckon this is to prevent people rushing to the stores to get their hands on these very sought-after fukubukuros.

Bag 1 costs ¥2990 with Hello Kitty as the main theme
Bag 2 is ¥3990 also with Hello Kitty theme
Bag 3 is the most expensive with ¥5500, and yes, you guessed it. Hello Kitty theme.

Bag 4 is another ¥2990 fukubukuro, but this time, with My Melody theme.
