From the homeless vagrants down the street, to the rising temperatures that will kill us all, to the personalized ads that seem to know when you take a shit, dystopia is all around us.
A great writer knows how to borrow details from history and the present day to create a memorable dystopia. Sometimes all an author needs to do is be born in North Korea, but sometimes you have to go further, paying close attention to the news to really understand the horrible ways we're all going to die. If you're writing a dystopia about a religious cabal who takes over the US, just start going to church, and you really want to understand what how a soul-crushing cult could take over the world, consider working for Amazon.

Thank you @After-t13e. I say the same thing to people all the time, but they mostly get up and find a new seat on the bus.
