We are about to finish our fourth year and I still struggle to get out of the traditional school mindset. I'll talk about how our homeschool has changed over the last four years and drop a little advice to new homeschool moms who might be struggling with this as well.

4 yrs into homeschooling. My son has been HS from the beginning. I came out of Public School. My biggest struggle has been the "sit still, be quiet, don't interrupt" part of trad school. I know he needs to move and talk. He's a whole body learner. I still fall into trying to follow those trad school rules.

It’s hard to just let it all go when it’s all we know. But you’ve got this! I feel like each year I chip away at it a tiny bit more. 😊

As a former teacher who is told all the time to not have homeschool look like school, I’ve learned that it’s okay if it looks a little traditional! We have homeschooled off and on. We homeschooled then when I started teaching again, my kids went back to school. Then I pulled them back out last year. My kids do best with structure. I do allow them to do things with their hands while they learn, take breaks, etc which I guess is a bit different, but not for me as a teacher. I’ve tried doing things other ways and it seems to fall apart. Just do things the way you feel is best!

EXACTLY!! Customize to what works for you and sometimes that can mean a more traditional approach and sometimes not. And sometimes it varies for us even by subject. 😊

@@Making_Homeschool_Happen yes! My boys are teenagers (my daughter just graduated). They need structure. I’ve tried the “unschooling” thing and the interest-led thing. They just want to “do school” and move on with life. When I finally stopped listening to everyone else, we finally had peace in our school day.

@@courtneycrosland I’ve listened to multiple podcast on unschooling and I just can’t wrap my head around it. I know some homeschoolers that do it and it is the perfect fit for them. I don’t know if it’s something we could ever do but I think there are some kids who thrive with it! But I don’t think that’s us. 🤣

This is exactly what I'm dealing with after 5 years of HS. This I'm stepping out on Faith and ditching trad. HS. We will be doing more learning through books and experiences. I de-schooled my son when I pulled him out at 3rd grade, however I never de-schooled myself until now.

Anyone else have trouble letting go of the traditional school mindset?? It's something I have to work on all the time.
