Fox gets his HEAD stuck in a METAL PIPE!

Wildlife Aid

4 жыл бұрын

We've seen foxes stuck in everything from garden fences to car tyres, but this particular patient (filmed for Wildlife SOS series 9) left us scratching our heads a little!
He was rushed into the centre after the RSPCA found him with his whole head stuck in a metal pipe. Despite efforts, Simon and the team were unable to dislodge him with the plastic funnel technique, so it was time to break out the power tools...

Hi guys, for those of you worried about the angle grinding, yes it was a grinding disc, but we had no cutting disks available and no time to try to go out and buy one! This was filmed several years ago now and we have since made sure our tool supplies are ready in case something like this should happen again :)

It's such a classic thing with foxes. Unless it's those who dart right into the underbrush and disappear, those who do run down a path or a long distance across a field, tend to give one last look, some even stopping and turning to give a long last look, like a sign of gratitude. Always nice to see. 🤗

I can't even imagine the stress level of that fox, being stuck like that, in a cage and surrounded by humans. And when you started cutting that piece of metal, this time it was me who was so stressed! And when the disc grinder slipped, I think my heart missed a beat. The Fire Brigade's cutting jaws probably wouldn't fit into the gap between the fox's neck, their equipment is not designed to operate in very small gaps like that. Anyway they had the pipe off in a few minutes well before any possible help from the Emergency Services could materialise.

Simon, you might consider buying cutting discs for that angle grinder in case something like this happens again. I've seen low-spark alternatives that were about 1 mm thick - would have been through that tube in a third of the time, if not even quicker. Also, please please please, keep both hands on the grinder and try to find a posture to the side and "behind"! That way you'll have much more control over it when it decides to try to run off on you.

Oh My G! Yes, now that was a heart stopper! Great job once again you guys!!!! Especially Simon! I've done plenty of metalwork and welding in my time. So I have some safety advice to adhere to when using any hand held "spinning disc" type cutter. Observe the spin direction of the disc and think about the direction that it will pull when in touch with the material to be cut. Then, if it's possible, which it would have been in this case, angle the main weight of the machine backwards, away from the pull that the disc gives. This makes it more likely to jump up, and not forwards so much, when the disc does snatch like it did. And during any cut "through" the material, move the grinder back and forth a little, this generally widens the area of the cut a bit, helping to prevent the disc snatching as much as possible. Angle grinders are very powerful when the disc is spinning at maximum speed, due to the momentum of the motor and disc combined. It's why they work and it's how they work.

Hi, couple of things here, you should have been wearing decent eye protection, normal glasses are not for angle grinder use as they are not suitable for high speed impacts, and sparks and debris can find their way around and into your eye, I know because I have had it happen. That disc you were using was a grinding disc, a thin cutting disc would have been much better and quicker, less heat and easier to control, you should have also been wearing gloves, as you were very close to a potential kickback there and your hand would not stand a chance. A better tool to look into would be an oscillating multi-tool with an appropriate blade, they are similar to the tools used by fracture clinics to remove casts, they are much safer in close proximity to live flesh, very easy to control and are much safer for the operator. I know the temptation is to 'get on and help' the animal, but you don't want to become a casualty yourself, a cut from an angle grinder hurts like hell and debris in the eyes is no joke either, stay safe.

As someone who works in maintenance in a large manufacturing plant, grinders are an everyday part of life and I have to agree with this, I had a very close call with kickback and a tyvek suit saved me from a serous injury. I now where leather gloves and a full face shield when using any sort of grinder. Please be more careful next time, grinders are extremely dangerous if not handled properly.

The thing is, even with all the mentioned personal protective equipment, kickback could still cause serious injuries to the fox. In my opinion a good quality dremel + a cutting disc might be better for a delicate application like this... this model I just googled seems powerful enough to drill through 1/8" steel, but maybe situations like these don't happen often enough to justify the investment kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i8eTZpd0pqy5fX0.html

While you lot were poncing about with the correct tool for the job and the correct disc and your precious ppe the fox would be a long time dead. is it beyond the scope of your imagination to realise that sometimes in life people do the best they can with what falls to hand? Just respect the fact they got the result and stop being such know-it-alls

They stop when they touch something conductive so you cant use them on metal

As Chisel says, that technology for for cutting non-conductive (or at least poorly conductive) materials and the retraction mechanism is only practical for a table saw rather than a hand held grinder.
