The U.S. government has experienced three major shutdowns over the past twenty-five years. In 1995, it was a fight over programs like Medicare. In 2013, it was over an effort to defund Obamacare. In 2018, it was over funding for a border wall. And while each crisis revolved around a different policy fight, they all followed a similar pattern: Republicans, egged on by right-wing pundits and talk radio, were pressured into forcing a government shutdown that eventually blew up in their faces.
Ever since the 90s, Republicans have become dependent on right-wing outlets like Fox News and Rush Limbaugh to rally and mobilize their supporters. That’s garnered them success in major elections, but it’s also backed them into a corner. Republicans know they can’t betray the conservative pundits who helped elect them, but those pundits are becoming more and more ideologically extreme, pressuring Republicans to shut the government down over even minor funding disputes.
As long as right-wing media has a stranglehold on conservative politics, Republicans will keep finding themselves steered into crises they know they can’t win.

@@TheeMoJo "Dems are too busy trying to help stop another shutdown" Trying again: -Dems shut down the government over $1.6B for a border wall, only a portion of the $5B, while still gaining other benefits (e.g., DACA extension, better asylum prosecution, immigration reform, etc.). -Democrat leaders in the HOR and senate all left capitol hill during the shutdown for vacation whilst Trump and the GOP speaker of the senate did not. -Trump gave dems some things they wanted in the proposal, see above, and they still said no due to the $1.6B for the wall (>0.05% of the total 2019 budget). -Obama shut down the government for Obamacare costing nearly $500B upon signing the bill, when upon execution cost $1.7TRILLION due to government bureaucracy. Obamacare wont pay for itself until 2040. -A wall will save us hundreds of millions a year, if not billions, reduce crime, increase wages for Americans, etc.

Bad Meme Yeah. We should give more money to schools so that it all gets sent into hiring more administrators instead of expanding the curriculum, paying teachers more, or fixing up the classrooms. Not to mention the fact that the money would probably go into paying welfare and Medicare for the illegal immigrants who don’t pay any taxes.

The fact that someone can say "in order to repeal healthcare we have to shut the government down" and not cause a national crisis is mind blowing. If that was said by a major TV host in a different country like The UK or Canada, they would've been destroyed.

@@davescott7680 Many Americans would rather pay $1000 to only pay for their own healthcare than pay $500 to pay for their own and everybody else's healthcare, because some of those others they would pay for might be lazy and thus not deserving of others paying for them. That that that's pretty far from the truth doesn't matter. Also, many Americans just have this indoctrinated hatred of everything that could be seen as "socialistic" for no actual, factual reason other than = socialism = communism = pure evil. Even if it's very clearly better and for the greater good.

News channels is not suppose to be biased but to be neutral throughout. They must provide information for the viewers to decide what is right and wrong. News agencies are not supposed to tell people what to think. And I think that is the biggest downfall for the country listening to news agents as I know that people are intelligent to make their own decision.

Ok you don’t fully understand, gerrymandering is on a gubernatorial level, where states draw district lines to better represent the party in power. This has nothing to do with the electoral college, although I hate both the electoral college and gerrymandering.

@Levity That's a very dismissive way to talk about millions of federal workers and contractors. Especially the contractors who will not receive backpay. How do you figure that many had rainy day funds? Considering several studies were published recently saying how 40% of Americans could not raise $500 for an unexpected emergency expense, and >50% could not raise $1000. News stories abound of the real world consequences to these poor workers. The flow-on effects of this will take years to analyse, it will tie in to loan sharks/pay day lenders, damaged credit ratings, credit card debt, evicted renters, psychological trauma from having to worry about all of the above etc etc. And Americans should not have HAD to make charitable contributions. This shutdown should never have happened, and would not have without Fox News attacking Trump directly to influence his decision making.

@MrTrainerGuy1 Why would Hegseth have said "I inoculate myself. Germs are not a real thing. I can't see them, therefore they are not real"? Why would the other hosts nervously be laughing? Why did he fail to say "just kidding, I believe the CDC and every other medical/biological science organization that washing hands can prevent germ transmission and that germs are real" in order to calm that nervous laughter from the other hosts? Did he retract his statements after the segment?

@MrTrainerGuy1 The Timcast channel is only making the claim that Hegseth's comments are not newsworthy. They aren't really newsworthy, for sure, but among Hegseth's office cohorts I imagine his revelation is quite newsworthy to them personally if he truly disbelieves CDC recommendations to wash one's hands, especially after #2. He seemingly never retracted his statement that "germs are not a real thing". If he did, good for him. Even so, the nervous laughter among his cohosts is quite justified in that moment.

Why not blame businesses for accepting labor from "illegal" workers if it's so detrimental? (side note: I put illegal in quotations because the law and what is just are very separate things and that should be recognized. Language itself should be recognized as a tool of power) Shielding yourself from the systematic failures (literally and metaphorically) and blaming a mythical other doesn't actually solve anything. I'll give you that the democrats are insanely hypocritical here though, as you're correct about their stupid policies in the past. I'll also give you the fact that Trump is a symptom and not the problem. He is clearly the democrats' "other" to blame.

For the people that claim they care sooo much about supporting the troops they sure seem to not care about forcing military members to work for no pay. I was in the Army during the last few shutdowns and the burden of not knowing when I would get paid but still having to go to work and live my life, not to mention taking on more work to cover down for the civilian contractors that weren’t allowed to work since they couldn’t be paid, was enormous and it wears you down
