I agree. It blows my mind how these scumbags can openly steal from honest people and then just shrug their shoulders and say "Talk to my attorney". I PERSONALLY know some people who were scammed by guys like this (not this much money but it was upwards of ten grand) and based on court filings and bankruptcy laws the scumbag could hide behind, my friends are out of luck, but the person who stole from them live in a gorgeous house and live a very good life. I don't understand how THEY aren't afraid of someone taking care of them, if you get my drift.

We did and at the time we hired them, they did have a license and most of their reviews were very positive.

@@andwhat346 How do you know they had a license at the time? If they used to be licensed previously, Rob would have mentioned it, so I doubt they ever were. As to reviews? Don't trust online reviews when spending massive sums of money. Only use contractors who get personally recommended to you by people you know, and only if those people had jobs completed by them already, not just started. Every contractor I've hired came highly recommended by people who vouched for their work. I did have one plumber who turned out to be lousy, but thankfully it was a pretty small job. Usually, though, if your friend says they've used the guy several times in the past five or ten years and he's always done a great job, you should come out okay. Online reviews? Those can be faked easily enough.

And especially to someone as sketchy looking as this guy. No legit or reputable business needs all that money up front to provide services your business claims it can provide. Licensing is really not the relevant point here. The government's imprimatur is what you're looking for? I could care less if my contractor/electrician/plumber is licensed: I care if they're good. If multiple friends/acquaintances have used them in the past and have been happy with the result, that works for me.

We needed a bunch of work done when we bought our house a few years ago, so we were hiring a roofer, an electrician, a plumber, an inspector, someone to install central air, a floor guy, as well as a general contractor for a bunch of other stuff (e.g. painting, reinforcing the deck, fixing the ceiling, and a bunch of other stuff). A year or two later we had to get some work done, including putting in a new deck, after a 60 foot tree fell on my house. As I said, the original plumber was really lousy, but our plumber since then has been great. The contractor was solid. The deck guy was good, the roofer was great, the electrician was too. The a/c guy? Meh. He was okay. Not great, not terrible. That's all I can remember now. The only guy who even slightly would be called a ripoff artist would be the first plumber, but that was minor stuff, and we called him out on it in time. I think he was more stupid and incompetent than crooked, although there might have been a little of that as well. I would never, ever use him again. FWIW, when we had plumbing work done on our rented apartment back in the day, the local guys who spoke no English and were unlicensed did better work than the American college grad licensed plumber. Nice guy, he, but the other guys are naturals. Prior to buying this house, we rented an apartment in a different town, so this was all new to us: A house, owning, new neighborhood. So we leaned heavily on the recommendations of others, and for the most part it worked out. My wife might have checked up on who was or wasn't licensed, I don't know. I never did; I just relied on the recommendations we received. For example, is our current plumber licensed? No clue. I never asked, and I doubt my wife did either, because we needed him in a pinch when we moved in and had no such luxuries. He's done work for us a bunch of times since then (this is a pretty old house), and he gets the job done, and he is not money hungry, and he comes at all hours. Whether or not the government gives him a piece of paper for the right price has no effect on his work, and doesn't matter to me one whit.
