I know, right? She seems like this cute Jewish grandma and like...how did she dial it in so hard to tease out the best in this complicated, storied, iconic and stubborn British artist? She couldn't possibly have been a fan back in the day. Yet she was able to create such a safe, curious, well-researched, and grounded. space for this exchange to casually and innocently unfold. I really freaking love it.

Absolutely not. In Great Britain he's very influential; even current day. He's so quintessentially English eccentric. With regard to Smiths songwriting, that would be Johnny Marr. Morrissey the lyrics. Regards from Kensington and Chelsea; in London.
@mrjelly5718
@mrjelly5718 8 ай бұрын
@@steffanhoffmann I agree. he is influential but again as I stated nothing near what he should be given his years of writing excellent music. Even in England he is not as influential as most artists sadly. Yes most musicians give him praise (Noel Gallagher etc) and people know of him and hood the smiths as one od the best bands of all time but given how many years he has been putting out top quality music, he is still not where he should be. I wish he would get the full recognition he deserves. Also, while marr wrote the music to smiths songs just like street, white, etc wrote the music to Morrissey songs, the melody and lyrics has been morrissey and while yes the chord prorgression of morrissey songs and Marrs guitar playing is held as one of the best guitarists of all time, morrissey ability to write lyrics and the melody is by far most important since he has proven to create quality music with various different musicians. Reminder that most people Judge a song by the melody and lyrics not by chord profession. He is not just a lyricist. Best wishes to you.

@@mrjelly5718 I agree with most of it, except melody chord progression. To my knowledge, he doesn't play a musical instrument. Even in the Smiths video of How Soon Is Now, he can be seen with Marr, who is showing him; where to put his hands on the fret. So unless you can convince me otherwise, I'm afraid we'll have to agree to differ.

Been a fan since I was in high school in Springfield MO in 1987. I can't even begin to explain this man's impact on my life. I have dragged my kids to his concerts. Flown then across the world to see him, Including the Broadway stint in 2019. I have even met and hung out with Johnny Marr (who despises Morrissey and considers Morrissey's mom even more of a "fascist" than the man himself). And in all of my research, my travels and my journeys -- including all the adorable '80s BBC interviews we are lucky enough to get to access online now -- this was by far the most disarmingly casual, humble and sweet interview I've found. It sure helps to be neutral when interviewing such a polarizing figure. This little lady did not have a dog in the race. And that made it a perfect moment.
