Yeah, as someone having watched gymnastics since Mary Lou Retton's days, I never understand why it's always some older men and women ---- unknown, out of nowhere who likely were even gymnasts ---- who're in charge of making crucial selection decisions. I've always wondered why men & women, former elite gymnasts themselves, were never put in position to make decisions. Surely, some level headed women & men who've gone through these trials & tribulations SHOULD be in better positions to JUDGE (on very technical grounds) and to ADVOCATE for athletes in a very demanding and brutal sport that requires literally a decade to 2, to master basics...

Who would have thought that 16 years ago, two teenagers Alicia and Chelsie we saw win silver for the US in Beijing, would now be heading up the women’s program for USAG and really making the changes needed for healthier athletes. I love their personalities and attitudes, and that even though they look the same, they’re standing on business to protect their girls!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸

Have to ask but WHY is there the high stress Classics meet AND Championships AND an Olympic Trials? When sports like Track, Swimming and Diving use Trials in an Olympic season as the de facto National Championships? All condensed into one. Gymnastics has all these qualifying championship meets back to back to back with intense practices and then more National team Camps and workouts between Trials and the Games? How do they expect these athletes to stay healthy through all the pounding on their bodies in a short span?
@aliciadear
@aliciadear 7 күн бұрын
It’s to show consistency. Other sports are different and have a lot more opportunity for international competition/ncaa competition for those eligible during the year. That’s not so much the case for the US. We actually typically send B or C teams to international comps (minus worlds) because the top level athletes are protecting their bodies.

@@seensay2132you have to realize trials are once every 4 years. They can’t take out a competition due to it being too much. Not every gymnast gets the opportunity to compete at trials. It is sad those 3 got injured but there isn’t much they can do about it, they are looking out of every elite gymnast, not just one
@nabojsa
@nabojsa 7 сағат бұрын
@@seensay2132 even if you take out trials there's still lots of INTENSE training going on in these few weeks before the olympics and those athletes would probably get injured there, or even worse at the olympics... it's better to lose an athlete earlier while you can still put together alternative team, than at the last second when they can't be replaced anymore. Tokyo was the great example: Biles was out and couldn't be replaced anymore because the competition had already started... now imagine losing Skye, Shilese and Kayla during team finals, leaving only 2 athletes able to compete when they need 3 scores to count... also Skye said that her injury was inevitable... just as Iordache said during 2017 worlds - she knew her achiless was weak and there's great chance she'll rupture it but chose to compete anyway hoping for the best. Those gymnasts are pushing their bodies too hard literally every day, not just during competition days, so it's more like WHEN will the injury happen, rather than WILL it happen.

Transformative. I watched these ladies gym careers! Look at these graduates! As much as the spectators think about individual medals, it has been team first and that's not going to change unless they cannot put together a competitive team. Simone is not meant for the foolish.
