How to save Foxglove seeds and direct sow them for blooms next year. The key is early sowing!
I grow tons of Foxgloves and have for 20 years. I love the ease of these cottage garden flowers and this is how I save seeds to replant, swap and share.
The hummingbirds love these flowers too!

Some years they come back thicker than others, I think it all has to do with what kind of winter I get. One thing is for sure, the gophers won't bother them.

The humming birds are beautiful you're so lucky having them in your garden as we don't have them here in England. They certainly love foxgloves. It's amazing how an introduced plant to the US, designed by nature on this side of the Atlantic for bumble bees, can feed humming birds! That's nature for you tho 😊

i think its because they are so small and gets away deep down or away with the water. as in the middle of this summer i was sorting foxglove seeds by an table (i handled likely millions of them) from 3 or 4 plants i think and obviously i dropped some on the ground. its actually right over or besides where the water runs from the mountain and now months later there are perhaps ten , obv foxglove plant leaves, growing right where the stones are and the water runs trough. like one meter from where i sat

So I just purchased a foxglove plant from a nursery and planted it in our yard. Should I collect my seeds before the first winter frost?
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse Жыл бұрын
You can but I let mine reseed at will during the Fall, it loves the cold of winter. But if you want to save half to replant in the Spring you can do that too. Just know what falls to the ground and reseeds itself will bloom but the ones you start later usually won't bloom until the following year.

Will the original plant that you took seeds from come back every year? Is it a short live plant?
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse 6 ай бұрын
Foxgloves are biennials. The majority grow the first year and flower the second then die. But they produce so many seeds and readily reseed themselves that it is worth having them in my garden. But, here is the caveat, when I plant all white ones from seed they will cross pollinate with the other colors in the garden and rarely come back true, meaning the seedlings will not be white, they will be another color. I may get a white one here and there but mostly they will be various colors. So yes, they are a short lived plant.

Does the soil have to be bare before you shake the seeds off on it, or is it okay if the soil is mulched?
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse 2 жыл бұрын
It depends on the mulch. If it is a shredded bark or wood mulch you would need to scrape it back. If it is a compost mulch you can spread the seeds on top of it.

Thank you. Do you know the foxglove variety you use? It sound like at least one of them is a hybrid since you mentioned the seeds won’t grow true. I’m now to foxglove growing.🙏
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse 3 жыл бұрын
No, it isn't that they are a hybrid, it is they are open pollinated so you will get a cross of all in your garden. So I could scatter seeds from the white foxgloves and still get pink from them, the bees bring pollen from the pink foxgloves to the white one.
