FOX Weather Correspondent Katie Byrne has been touring Houston communities since Hurricane Beryl made landfall in Texas on Monday. She spoke with one resident who said “It’s Hell on Earth in Houston” in regards to the brutal heat and humidity and lack of power and air conditioning since the deadly storm hit.

I'm here in Houston, 5 miles from downtown. After Beryl passed through, all of my neighbors came together outside and immediately began cleanup. People we never see came out of their homes. It was a strange yet comforting realization that we are ALL affected some way from the storm, all in it together.

That’s so lovely. We are Texans and Houston’s! Gotta stay together. I remember doing Hurricane Harvey and Katrina, people all of sudden were nice and helpful and asking do people need this or that. No government came, only a few churches came out in big trucks and with canned food and bottle of waters they had stockpiles of. It was such a bad time and the people humanity made it better to withstand the tough times. It’s unexplainable

After Frances in 2004, in Orlando we didn't have electricity for 3 weeks. We have a well, so that meant not electric for the well pump. I'm an Operating Room nurse and 8 had to go in at 5 to shower and get groom before work. My hubby did the same at the gym. There were lots of pizza, subs, and Chinese. Be strong, Houston! 💪

At least we have a governor who cares about us and invested in the fire departments and acknowledge the effects of climate change! We also have a solid electrical infrastructure because again, our governor held pG&E responsible and we aren’t even having rolling blackouts like we did a few years ago. We can’t help the weather but we can help how we deal with it and how to help residents through it.

This was a CAT 1 hurricane that only formed close to where it landed south of Houston. Imagine if it had more time to get to CAT 2! The conditions on the Gulf would have allowed for a CAT 2 had Beryle has more time before land fall. This is a sorry state of all the damage, why are these types of trees allowed to grow if the roots are so shallow that with rain-soaked soil the 80-mph wind knocks them down? Maybe there isn't any kind of tree that would survive CAT 1 wind speed. All these neighborhoods need to get the power lines installed underground instead of up on poles where tree limbs intertwine. You pay once or end up paying every time a hurricane comes through. Houston is just a jumble of no zoning law neighborhoods where developers can get away with all manner of shenanigans. Hurricanes uncover all the weak spots. Time to clear out some trees and then think of something besides putting the same type of tree back in place.

The trees fell because they planted as grown up trees, they didn’t grow up on these spots, that’s why their roots are not deep in the ground and easy to fall on the street. Houston is beautiful city, with wonderful people, but weather is unbearable in summer or winter 😢.

From black ice in February to flooded streets and I-10 in the summer from two tropical depressions (which I had to white knuckle drive through from Baytown back to Houston not once but twice) and get covered in sweat while walking less than 30 feet from my apartment to my car due to the heat and humidity at 7 am, I counted two weeks of excellent, humidity free weather. Excellent restaurants, lots of shops and great entertainment aside, that weather is a no go for me, and one of the primary reasons I chose to start my career in the SF/Bay Area over a similar opportunity in Houston. You are spot on about the wonderful people as I was treated with kindness and Southern grace.

47 native here, you are correct. This is what happens when you plant trees on the sponge they call the gulf coast prairie. Developers use the cheapest trees they can find and no one wants to take ownership and spend the money to maintain them properly. Now here we are. @@recyclingrevolution4905

When Sandy hit New York we lost some evergreen trees. Maples and oaks are tough and will survive. I agree the trees were adults when planted. They have to be young so they'll take root properly. Palms have shallow roots but are pretty.

Yes, they are frustrated but that does not excuse gathering in crowds around line crews - most of whom have come into Houston from places 100's of miles away to help - and shouting abuse, curses, throwing bottles and rocks -- all to get the power on quicker? No wonder the world is such a mess - too many places where civility and love of neighbor no longer exist.

Yeah that’s dumb forrreal , gotta show appreciation they coming to turn on the power. During the winter freeze it took like a week or two. Hurricanes it’s usually a week tops. They need more backup generators and more of these people in the work force. They also need to try making underground power lines, I don’t know if they would help though.. Texas got one of the biggest power grids ever.

It's why the old time houses were built with high ceilings, wrap around porches, shuttlers, awnings, upstairs porches, screened windows on all sides of the house, to do what they could do beat the heat and humidity - it's why the south swapped hot tea for ice cold tea, lemonade 🍋, and peach 🍑 infused drinks. It's why they eventually got rid of the petticoats, jackets, and vests.

Lived in Houston area going on 28 years been through now 7 adverse weather events. Common denominator... Living on the coast in Texas is hot, humid and we are subject to mother nature especially at this time of the year. This is nothing new or novel. Nor will it be our last event. Its miserable I know. But, one thing I know about the citizens of Houston metro is we are resilient and we always bounce back.

Yes. I know what you mean. I spent 40 years in Honolulu. In the 70's it seemed like the power was out every other day. We had hurricanes, tsunamis, and just strong wind and lots of rain sometimes. We lived close to nature in a strong environment. We just took it in stride and figured it was worth it.

@@bigdreams5554 Except that hasn't occured. Last hurricane to hit Houston was Harvey in 2017. Hurricanes on average hit Houston once every 5 to 8 years apart. Beryl came at its due time. Its the life such as it is living on the coast.

Nothing about poor or cheap or flood or mud. I commented on the Gulf Coast. 125,000 square miles of space, with a vast array of different economic categories and infrastructure. Dude, the horizon where I was born was completely packed full of pine trees when I was a kid. Ther was no horizon. But then we rode out hurricane Rita and when I woke up the horizon was completely changed Wasn’t used to seeing the sky under the treeline

A lot of those pines are not natural especially on the south side. Too many were planted because they were cheap. They are lacking deep taproots that the natural ones have, which is why they fell over so easily.

My understanding the power grids past issues were not addressed , preparation of beryl was not properly coordinated . And abbot is in another country . Cutting peoples driveways out and clearing roads. When I got a generator I handed out cold water and cooked for neighbors. I've got blisters and sores all over my feet and can hardly walk without pain. So I'll take my snack and ac lmao

Trees provide shade, to keep the Texas clay soil from cracking during hot weather, lowering costs for irrigation, and lowering temperatures so your AC doesn’t have to run constantly. It saves energy. But there’s always risk.

In Baytown when hurricane Alicia hit in August 18, 1983 wasn't it? We were taking cold water showers for ten days just to cool off. My neighbor Jim Upton really did most of the work with his chain saw. Jim was helping with rescue in hurricane Harvey in 2017, had a heart attack and died.

I was living in The Woodlands in 1983 when Hurricane Alicia hit. Talk about a terrifying experience! I was 14 years old and I remember that day like it was yesterday!

Everyone not on the coast, a cat 1 is still enough to cause serious damage. And with hurricanes, the scale is so huge. You may have to drive 40 mi just to find any gas or any place with power... If you can get past flooding and downed trees

This is houston. I grew up here. This is why it used to be so cheap to live in houston. We would have to increase our electric rates by 1/3 if you want it to be more reliable after a hurricane. This will happen at least every decade. Prepare, have an emergency fund so you can leave the city if you can't have a generator. After the storm, maintain your generator. Clean the air filter, clean the spark arrestor, change the oil if it ran for more than a day or two. If you use gasoline make sure that you follow the proper maintenance for gasoline to clean out the carburetor. This will happen again in the future. It may even happen again this summer. I have friends that live in Austin and they say you can't live in TX anywhere with out air con in the summers. Even at night it's hot and humid. .

Why is it that probably the second richest state in the USA cannot afford generators and can't run their power lines in a manner so that a mere Category 1 landfall doesn't disrupt the power supply? I live in Louisiana and have been through a couple dozen hurricanes from Cat 1 to 150mph Cat 4, and the only one that knocked out our power more than 2 days was Ida. Even Katrina only knocked the power out for 2 days. Louisiana is one of the poorest states in the nation and we have a lot more trees to fall on power lines, yet we're somehow better equipped to deal with it than Texas? Sounds like mismanagement to me.

when the power went out for a week recently in Dallas the gas stations were down for miles around me. The natural gas generators went down on day 2 from line demand. l learned in the case of a long-term widespread blackout those w/ solar/batteries and EVs will be the only ones w/ AC, transportation, food storage etc.

Keeping a "thin film of mist" from a spray bottle of water on yourself will help if must work outside in the heat. Heat gets absorbed by the water, so that it can better transfer away from your body.

My prayers are with you all. We also lost power but immediately I prayed that it would be restored and I plead the blood of Jesus over the prayer and an hour later the power was restored. THANK YOU LORD JESUS! (This was the first day the hurricane occurred).

If you are in a good place, and God has made a way for you. Please pray for those without generators, in poorly insulated housing like trailers or with elderly, with infants. People are dying of heat exhaustion, and they don't report those deaths, only the ones from the storm impact.
