FPV drones launch attacks in Sudden Strike 3?

Somehow, it has been possible to implement FPV drone soldiers as anti-tank infantry in Sudden Strike 3 like so.
Tethering them to infantry models was really the only practical way to add such tiny weapons to the game.
Their range is limited to about the range tanks fight at in the game, which a good translation of their real role to this game because the drones really do only travel about 2-3km. You be the judge.

I also need to rework the javelin to be ballistic fire and have a model for the missile (it should go over walls and terrain and strike from above) same with spgs. Overall it's balanced as the Russians have portable kornets and even Hamas will have fpvs and portable konkurs (in limited numbers). The next update is going to be epic if I dare say so

I mean the Russians will have fpv infantry too and also ZALA Lancets (they will be a proper unmanned plane though) but Ukraine will have good numbers in the Dnipro crossing scenario.

You should turn drone operators into a separate class, they aren't really trained for fighting with rifle on the frontline

I have slightly exaggerated their range, considering how much Sudden Strike compresses the ranges of units rather than portraying them accurately. "AT unit" already covered AT rifles and bazookas, so extending to ATGMs and FPVs is a fair choice. They can hit targets at 215m away. Bear in mind, this is a game where artillery guns with a 15km range in the real world will elevate their gun to 17 degrees to hit a target that is over 145m away. There are going to be a variety of gameplay reasons why this is the practice, across all similar games

Is the maximum range hardcoded? it would be a shame because modern hardware can easily run huge SS3 maps without any problems

I just disagree with doing that. The compressed approach to portraying battles with limited ranges and small maps makes scenarios playable in a comfortable time frame, removes excess scenery, distance and obstruction. It also makes the maps more cinematic and fun like a movie. And no value is lost in the game as a combat sim, either. Anything that can happen tactics-wise is exactly the same whether ranges are scaled up or not.

@@baldmanevil maybe but the ludicrously short ranges kills immersion for me. Which is a shame because otherwise it's amazing.

@@Truth_Hurts528I think almost all games do it, even those purporting to be the most realistic. It's a feature in all entertainment, including movies where soldiers fight each other at a stone throw's distance because it looks better on camera, and game developers continue to try to create a cinematic experience rather than a hyper-realistic sandbox
