Father Ho Lung's family came to Jamaica, from China, in the 1930s where they struggled to survive operating a small shop. He was taught by the Franciscan sisters. Their Franciscan spirituality seemed a natural extension of the Buddhism of the Ho Lung family.
Through their witness, young Richard was baptized and was eventually ordained a Catholic priest. In 1980, Father Ho Lung founded the Missionaries of the Poor to serve the poor and downtrodden in his island home through service and song.

That a single man can make such a difference in the lives of so many of our brothers and sisters who live in poverty, is absolutely amazing to me! Blessed be God and Blessed be His Holy Name for calling this holy and humble man to the priesthood. May God bless you Father Richard and may He continue to bless the work of your hands.

I love the Journey Home Program and the testimonies I hear and see there. It reminds me of my own Conversion when I was 27 y/o. I had been a Protestant up until then and was not dissatisfied. However a Priest knocked on my door once and asked me to lunch. We never talked about religion but a friendship developed and one day he asked me to accompany him to Mass the next Sunday as that Parish had asked him to give a guest Homily. We sat together in the pew and he wore His black uniform and white collar. When he got up to give the homily I was shocked and amazed by his humility and the fact that he spoke from his heart and not from his head. It was no wonder why everyone in the church leaned forward in rapt attention and no wonder why it was obvious that all of the people loved him so much. I remember the thought that I had, "If the Catholic Church can produce a man like this it must not be all bad." The Protestant Church I attended was only somewhat anti Catholic not rabidly anti Catholic like many are. When It came to come up for the Eucharist I knew I was not allowed to do this as I was not Catholic and not wanting to offend anyone I decided to stay in my pew. As I was sitting there I felt a warm, masculine, caring, Presence and these thoughts came into my mind, "Al, would you refuse me? As a Protestant this scared me greatly as we had never been taught that anything like this ever happens. It took of a total of 3 times for this to happen before I went and went up to partake of the Eucharist. I never told my Priest friend and it took a little while before I was sure that this experience was Jesus talking to me. I became Catholic soon after that for the main reason that I now was sure that during the Catholic Mass it was really Jesus in the Eucharist and it seemed that by this experience Jesus was calling me into the Catholic Church. Fr. Richard Ho Lung, and his deep Humility reminds me of the Priest who was my friend and who had invited me to Mass. I had not intended to write this much but could not stop after I started.

That's a very serious accusation! If it were correct,it would mean most of the population of the Republic of Ireland, Poland and a fair few other nations were paedophiles- have you any evidence whatsoever to back up such a claim or it it just a malicious slur based on your bigotry? I'd say the latter, and it's just your spiteful and rather pathetic attempt at character assassination on a sweeping scale.It has made you look like an ignorant and unpleasant person,who wants to believe the worst of whole groups of people whom you know very little about!! It says far more about you than it does about us!

Not Amused You bet it's serious. Christianity is a fraud. In some of the first Christian churches ever found, dating to the 3rd century CE, archeologists found many double throated vases. The priests were pouring water into them and pouring out wine. Stupid people, like you, were going around saying it was a miracle. In the 5th century CE, a historian reports, (After the Pope insisted that a barn transported to Rome from Judea, was the birthplace of Jesus brought to Rome by "Angels.") It was impossible for priests not to meet each other in the streets of Rome without breaking into laughter at how gullible and stupid Christians are.

This Network is doing a great job. The truth shall set us free and on the right Path. Thanks you Jesus and your mother Mary for making this possible. Many are not happy and they profane the Church but you are with us till the end of times. Behold the church is set on the Rock that you established. I cannot imagine those who say they love you Jesus but they cannot stomach your mother. I wonder is they would like people to like them and hate their mothers. Pray for us sinners.

I watched a little of this. Fr. Ho Lung is a wonderful, spiritual man. However, his Buddhist background didn't seem very strong, so it was probably not a big jump for him to become Catholic after attending a parochial school. What's unsatisfying about this interview is that it really doesn't discuss Buddhism and its various branches. Just as there are branches in Christianity there are "vehicles" in Buddhism: Theravada, Mahayana, Vajrayana, Pure Land, Tantric, etc. I hope Mr. Grodi will at some point have someone on who can really discuss this instead of just talking about "Buddhism" as one monolithic spiritual path.
@MrRezillo
@MrRezillo 9 жыл бұрын
In fact, I don't think Fr. Ho Lung can really be called a "former Buddhist," as he became a Catholic at age 12, and didn't have much of a Buddhist upbringing before then.
@willcoburn6046
@willcoburn6046 9 жыл бұрын
bixntram There are no "branches" in Christianity. There is only one Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, the existence of which can be supported by thousands of documents written by the Early Church Fathers dating back to the first Century and up to the creation of the Bible in the 5th Century. Are you speaking of the heretical sects stemming from the Reformation that purport to be different "flavors" of Christianity? Also, is declaring someone a "former Buddhist" purely subjective, or is there a standard to which one must look for inclusion into Buddhism? Curious.

Will Coburn and there is only one way to the father.and that is through jesus- the catholic church seems to forget this... jesus christ is the only way,--no church--no mary--no rosaey--no lighting of candles like the pagons.. the catholic church is a CULT, and i thank jesus after 39 yrs in there,he brought me out.. i now trust in jesus alone..
@MrRezillo
@MrRezillo 9 жыл бұрын
john jonson This sounds like a standard misunderstanding and misinterpretation of the Catholic Church. One could well argue that each of the Protestant sects is in itself a cult. You might try reading Scott Hahn's "Rome Sweet Home," or on another level, Thomas Merton, or G.K. Chesterton, or Cardinal Newman, or Saint Augustine. By comparison, evangelical Protestantism is pretty light weight stuff, pace the late Francis Schaeffer.
@MrRezillo
@MrRezillo 9 жыл бұрын
Will Coburn As an RCIA catechumen, I tend to agree with your main point. However, the catechism itself is not so judgmental about Christians outside of the Church. And they ARE Christians: Protestants, Eastern Orthodox, Coptic, etc. I'm not sure what your point about Buddhism is. My point is that Fr. Ho Lung really didn't discuss Buddhism at all, so to consider him a "former Buddhist" for the sake of The Journey Home discussion, misses the mark. Perhaps Mr. Grode will find a real former Buddhist who can explain why he moved to Catholicism.

Have You Ever Been Deceived?
@GoTitans747
@GoTitans747 8 жыл бұрын
Have You Ever Been Deceived? Mike Gendron Proclaiming the Gospel Which is worse: to be insulted, embarrassed or deceived? The Nature of Deception If I were to insult you, you’d feel the sting immediately. If I were to embarrass you, you’d be the first to know. But if I were to deceive you, you might never know it! As painful as being insulted or embarrassed can be, at least you’re aware of what’s taking place. But people who are being deceived are noteven aware that they are being misled, unless they are confronted with the truth. Tragically, many go to their graves deceived about life’s most important issue: “What must I do to be saved from eternal condemnation?” Choose Your Source For Truth What is your source for truth? Is it trustworthy? Will it protect you from the schemes and lies of Satan, the master deceiver - whose servants disguise themselves as apostles of Christ? “Such men are false apostles and deceitful workers” (2 Corinthians 11:13-15) There is really only one truth source that is absolutely trustworthy. Jesus Christ declared, “I am the Truth” and He said, “Thy word is truth” (John 14:6, 17:17). Knowing this, our only protection from beingdeceived is to abide in Christ and His Word (John 8:31-32). Who Will You Trust? Many believe their pastors or priests uphold the truth of the Bible. But how can we know for sure? We must do what the first century Christians did. They examined the Scriptures daily to test the truthfulness of the apostle Paul’s teachings (Acts 17:11).Since Scripture was the standard for testing an apostle’s teaching, the same standard must be used for testing all religious leaders, including popes, priests, pastors and Sunday school teachers. The Danger of Deception Since your eternal destiny depends on what you believe and whom you trust, do not be “carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming” (Ephesians 4:14). The most terrifying words anyone could ever hear will come from the Lord Jesus when He tells the victims of deception, “Depart from me, I never knew you “(Matthew 7:25). This is why you must “examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves” (2 Corinthians 13:5, 8). What are you to look for when you examine your faith? The first question is simple: Is your faith based on the infallible Word of God, or on the fallible teachings of men? (Romans 10:17) Are you trusting in Jesus alone as your all sufficient Savior, or are you adding sacraments, purgatory and other religious rituals? (Hebrews 7:25). Are you trusting in Christ’s finished work of redemption, or your own works? (Ephesians 2:8, 9) Are you trusting in the baptism of the Holy Spirit for your conversion or water baptism? (1 Corinthians 12:13). Are you trusting in His righteousness as your passport to Heaven, or in your own righteousness? (2 Corinthians 5:21). If you failed the test, you must repent (change your mind) and believe the true Gospel of Grace (Mark 1:15). God’s Word Exposes Religious Error The Bible reveals that man is saved, not by what he does, but by trusting in what Christ has accomplished (Hebrews 10:10, 14). Any religion that teaches salvation is obtained through human effort and merit, is nullifying the grace of God. Grace is the only means by which God saves sinners! The Bible says, “If by grace, then it is no longer because of works; otherwise, grace would no longer be grace” (Romans 11:6). Misplaced Faith Some people blindly put their faith in religious leaders, assuming their leaders would never deceive anyone. Yet the Apostle Paul warned that “from your own church, men will arise perverting the truth to draw the disciples away after them” (Acts 20:30). Other people simply ignore God’s Word and listen to teachers who say what they want to hear (2 Timothy 4:2-4). Then there are people who have a zeal for God, but not according to biblical knowledge (Romans 10:1-4). It was misplaced faith that separated Adam and Eve from God. They were the first victims of deception when they ignored God’s Word and put their faith in the devil and his lies. That fatal decision brought spiritual and physical death to them and all their descendants. The only way anyone can be reconciled to God is by faith; that is, by trusting Jesus and His Word and renouncing the fatal lies of false religions. By repenting (changing our minds) and turning to Christ in faith, we receive spiritual and eternal life. “He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him” (John 3:36). Are you basing your eternal destiny on the eternal truths of God’s Word or on man’s teachings and religious traditions? Where Will You Spend Eternity The Bible makes it clear: we will either spend eternity enduring the wrath of God or in His loving presence (John 3:36). Jesus said, “Whoever rejects Me and does not accept My words has something to judge him: the word that I spoke, it will condemn him on the last day” (John 12:48). Those who reject the words of Jesus and follow the traditions, opinions, and vain philosophies of men will be condemned. By contrast, how wonderful are God’s words, “as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name” (John 1:12).

+Jason Phung I am 72 y/o and was converted to become a Catholic Christian when I was 27 y/o as I described in a comment I wrote just a little bit ago today. I have had a very extensive scientific education in all of the sciences and became a Registered Nurse in 1978. Disregarding your remark about the Dalai Lama because it isn't germane to my point, in your remark about being enlightened by the reality of Science and technology, are you talking about the teaching of modern science that says a stream of electrons in the form of a lightening bolt hit pure H2O, which was the only thing that the ocean consisted of before life came on the scene, and that this stream of electrons hit a total of 2 types of atoms, Hydrogen and Oxygen, and somehow created an extremely complex one cell living being that was composed of over 50 (maybe a hundred) types of atoms and that this one cell living creature, by accident turned later into a chicken, a cat, a dog, a whale, a giraffe, and a human being? If that is the science that you prefer to the idea of a Supreme being creating everything, I will stick with the power of God creating everything and leave the ridiculousness of modern science to much smarter people like yourself.

+Albert Nygren religion is the root of weakness in human, therefore it can be use to exploit the human mind. All religions are a cult. All religions are man made. Nothing last forever. Just like the religion during the Greek era, Jesus will one day become a fictional character like Zeus is today. Religion by upbringing and conditioning is not spiritual awaken. It's brainwashing. The mind is empty at birth. What parents and traditions put into the mind of a child will be tattooed in their reasoning. The truth can never be falsified. If you take two children and do not influence them with traditions and family religion, they are more likely to be optimistic and question their surrounding and eager to find answers. Answers that are concrete and can be tested and verified with observations and experiments. Thus can be considered as the truth or a fact. Look at within the last 100 years how much science and technology have gave us. Religions give the weak human mind comfort.

+gabsylv so you're telling me what science can't explain one must look for it in religion? Praise someone that doesn't exist to satisfy the unknown answer. That's how primitive mind works. Something we cannot explain it must be of a higher being?. Science cannot explain everything now because human are still evolving. What cannot be explain 100 years ago can be explain now. Imagine what's the next 100 will be. Look at how science has evolved in the last 100 compared to the last 1000 years.
