This past installment of the Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine grand rounds, on Friday 8-December-2023, focused on frailty as described by Fred Ko, MD, and William Hung, MD.
Dr. William Hung is a geriatrician and Director of Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center, and professor in geriatrics and palliative medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He is a health services researcher and has extensively developed and evaluated geriatrics models of care, including a care transitions model enhanced by the use of a Regional Health Information Organization; an inpatient model for geriatric care, the Mobile Acute Care of the Elderly (MACE) model; and a geriatric consultation model using telemedicine to serve Veterans in rural areas (GRECC Connect).
Dr. Fred Ko is a geriatrician and Associate Director of Clinical Innovation at the GRECC, James J Peters VA Medical Center, and associate professor in geriatrics and palliative medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. His clinical and educational expertise centers on the management of geriatric syndromes including frailty in older adults across clinical settings. Dr. Ko's research focuses on the biology of frailty and surgery-induced stress and their intersection with adverse outcomes such as physical decline in aged organisms. Drs. Hung and Ko co-lead a study investigating frailty trajectories and frailty-targeting interventions in World Trade Center general responders.
