It's sad to see the pleat wave and poor (wide) spacing uniformity @ 3:21 on the unused cheapened media Ultra. Doesn't hold a candle to previous "OG Ultra" two ply full synthetic glass wire backed depth media. EG and TG fiber endcaps, typical Fram construction for as long as I can remember. Ultra is best here, but that's not saying much up against the two fiber cap options. Oh, Max should consider using the longer 4386 application over the shorty 4967. Same specs, just 3/4" longer, more media area. Thanks for vid.

@@WhipCityWrencher go with the orange one if you could. I’ve used the orange Fram for 20 years with out any thought in my previous John Deere LT 180 with the Kawasaki v-twin 17hp. You can mention that in the video if you wish. Gave that mower to my sister and still use orange Fram filter because I can get it at Home Depot or Walmart. It’s been a fine filter in my opinion never any issues. I use synthetic Mobil 1, 10W-30. Got about 1900 hrs on it and it starts as easy as it was new. Replaced the fuel lines, took off the hydrostatic transmission and dumped out the fluid and refilled with fresh Mobil 1, 15W-50. New belts too. My sister got one hell of a deal. Before watching your videos never gave oil filters a second thought. I find it very interesting seeing how different companies make them. I’ll probably go with the Orange Fram after the 3 year Toro warranty since I’ve had great luck with that filter over so many years. Thanks so much for making the videos. You’d be a great neighbor. PS. I was a Power Generation Mechanic in the Army for 8 years and helped the wheeled Mechanics often because they had so much work.

You'll need to do an update on this later down the road. These filters have been changed to Supertech construction for TG and PH series. Another video on here has shown new PH. XG/titanium line going amsoil/royal purple/endurance construction without fancy media and wire backing. PH is now nylon ecore and medal end caps, while XG now has loveurs instead of holes.

Bought 2 Fram Ultra Synthetic filters in Feb 2024. Changed oil at 140530kms in my 5.2 liter 1995 dodge ram 1500 and at 143730kms noticed on cold start up it would take just under 4 seconds to read oil pressure on the dash gauge. When starting the engine warm there was no delay in oil pressure, It seems the drain back valve would not keep oil in the filter past a few hours. Changed the oil and filter at 143740kms and the second filter suffered the same failure at 145921kms, both filters failed being in use in less than 3200kms. I can only guess why both drain back valves failed as this is not something I've noticed in oil filters before, I can only be sure that I'll not be using these filters again.

My preference (yes comment chucker) would be the Ultra - the only one of the three to have endcaps not made of fiber/cardboard and the thicker anti-drainback valve. The can(n)isters are the same, the gaskets are the same, the baseplates are the same, the stamped metal retainer springs with bypass valve are the same. If it had to be Fram, I'd get the Ultra.

FRAM, always seems to be looking for the least they can get by with.! Cost cutting above all, like the thinner ADBV'S.!! I have a few suggestions for them to cut costs even further.! They should start using recycled toilet paper roll cardboard centers, for their center tubes.!! They would save money and, would definitely get a good bond with those matching end caps.!!!! They could also cut back on the amount of adhesive they use by a few ounces on each filter. I think kindergartners could do a better, neater, job than what we actually see every time one these are cut open.!! I honestly think that they know the average person is not aware of what and how they produce their finished product.!! The outside looks great so they sale like hotcakes.! They must get a great deal on the adhesives that they are using.! That is the the only place they don't scrimp on.!! THANKS WHIP!!!!!, for ALL OF YOUR TIME AND EFFORT.!!! Nice videos, I did an oil change with that Mobile 20,000 mile stuff a couple of years ago on my moms old 2.4l 2009 Mitsubishi gallant. Stay away from that stuff, half the oil leaked out of the front main and I was out of town for the winter. The Engine got damaged, and now sounds like a big diesel motor with no muffler. It burns oil, more so in the winter, but gas mileage has not decreased. I though my front main seal went bad again because I had to change it when I did the timing belt 40K miles earlier. I ordered a new one, but then noticed once I put regular oil back in it, it didn't leak or really burn much all summer.

Only way to beat a Fram Ultra is with the Fram Titanium (sold at Advance Auto Parts only), which still uses the old Ultra wire-backed pink media that scored great in actual ISO 45348-12 performance tests for filtering efficiency, low pressure drop, & dirt holding capacity. Rumors are that the Fram Titanium might be starting to be made with new media, not as good maybe, so I bought 2 Titaniums in my size just in case. The Titanium even beats the new Fram Endurance, all clues indicate, although the new Fram Endurance is pretty great too. Fram is putting a lot of choice out there ! Endurance, Ultra, Titanium, ToughGuard, ExtraGuard, all will basically work OK.
@WhipCityWrencher
@WhipCityWrencher Жыл бұрын
Thanks👍 I think the New Endurance beats the Fram Ultra, but just below the Metal-backed Titanium. Now If they are changing the Titaniums (no wire backing) then I would have to put the Endurance on top of them all.
@softwaresignals
@softwaresignals Жыл бұрын
@@WhipCityWrencher Whip, the Fram Endurance really looks exactly like it is sourced off the identical production line as the Royal Purple oil filter. I say this from the way the media looks, but also by the 4548-12 Ascent Filtration Labs test done on the Royal Purple about a year ago, which shows the Royal Purple matching Fram's filtration efficiency claim for their new Endurance line. Fram Endurance and the clone Royal Purple are OK, but they don't hold enough dirt before clogging, and pressure drop is too much, all compared to the pink-media Fram Titanium (like the old Fram Ultra, not the the new Fram Ultra). These are NOT "big" problems though. More pressure drop just creates more & longer bypass events, not great. From Ascent Filtration's 4548-12 testing, actual valid lab engineering tests, rare to see: (summarized by user RDY4WR on Speed-Talk & bobistheoilguy) We see the old Fram Ultra pink-media wire-backed one (Fram Titanium now, for the time being anyway), always ranks in the top 2 in each important category: In order of efficiency at capturing particles 20 um and larger... #1 Fram Ultra - 99.96% #2 Royal Purple - 99.08% #3 ACDelco Gold - 96.49% #4 Purolator Boss - 61.80% #5 Wix XP - 61.61% In order of flow by pressure drop through the filter at a steady 30 LPM... (higher pressure drop = less flow) #1 Wix XP - 4.98 psid #2 Fram Ultra - 5.23 psid #3 Purolator Boss - 6.82 psid #4 ACDelco Gold - 6.82 psid #5 Royal Purple - 8.84 psid In order of loading capacity before clogging... #1 Wix XP - 18.1 grams #2 Fram Ultra - 13.6 grams #3 Purolator Boss - 12.5 grams #4 Royal Purple - 10.1 grams #5 ACDelco Gold - 9.1 grams

@@softwaresignals If I remember correctly that was an old Fram Ultra that he did a test on? Anyway, I agree I think the Fram Endurance Media is probably the same as the Royal Purple media, and probably the same as the Amsoil filter media. The New Fram Endurance filter media is nothing like any of the Fram Ultras that were ever made. Totally a different media. I'm going to compare them but It won't be for a while because just too many projects and not enough time. I think the Old Ultra was better than the Endurance but I would take the Endurance over the Ultra that they make now. Also, I want to add, the Titanium filter media is not the same as the New Ultra being made now, the Fram Titanium filter media is more like the old Fram Ultra media. @softwaresignals Жыл бұрын
@@junboo8730 Wix XP (NAPA Platinum clone) is set up like a racing oil filter: It filters poorly, but it flows well (low pressure drop) and holds a lot of dirt, and is wire-backed. Negative is that it did fail the bubble test (leaks thru the bypass IIRC) in the Ascent Filtration 4518-12 tests. Best is the Fram Titanium, which is like the old Fram Ultra. The new Fram Ultra looks decent, but is a bit unknown right now, so Fram Titanium wins about all the prizes currently. Fram Endurance (Royal Purple clone) has some negative performance attributes, but not too bad, acceptable. I think Fram Titanium makes an engine last longer since it filters best, etc., not Wix XP or NAPA Platinum.

I'd also consider the TOUGH Guard as well. More filter media there it seems. faxmen09 mentioned what I was thinking about using a different filter altogether those particular filters seemed so small. I'd go ULTRA and take faxmen09's suggestion using a different filter altogether (4386). Nice review, interesting comparisons ! 👍

Hi Astro, I just call them cardboard along with thousands of others because that's what they look like, Here's what FRAM says about the end caps: Quote End caps in the FRAM Extra Guard® and FRAM Tough Guard® filters are constructed from engineered fiber. FRAM has manufactured over two billion filters this way because with the plastiol glue this material allows for a superior seal with the filter media than does steel. Honda, Subaru, Bentley, Roll Royce and Nissan all use fiber end caps in OE filters. BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, GM and many others use only fleece for an end cap, and Toyota weaves the ends of the filter media together and uses no end cap at all.

I think the TG is built like the old EG used to be (long time ago). Not much of a difference between those 2. I noticed that the Endurance is on their website now and a 'Walmart exclusive'. I'd like to see the current Titanium against the Endurance. That Endurance looks like it probably has better flow than the Titanium or Ultra. The FE8A is priced at $12.97 almost same as the FS8A. I'm going to try the Endurance. I see on their description they say the tapping plate is HD but nothing about the can being thicker, though it was. I would probably take the flow over the double media.

@vincemajestyk9497
@vincemajestyk9497 Жыл бұрын
Thanks Pete! I think either the Ultra, Titanium, or Endurance are all great filters and I would use any of them. There's just minor differences between them. My belief is that the Endurance was developed because these new direct injected engines with variable valve timing and modulated displacement are controlled by the oil and are VERY sensitive to viscosity or oil flow changes outside what they're designed for. Each Mfr has many TSB's on the subject. They tout 'flow' on the Endurance. Some of the filter brands have backed off of their mileage recommendations and instead say to refer to the manufacturer's default recommendations. Most of my cars are old and I use 3k oil and filter changes so any would be fine for me. I bought a Titanium last month and it still had the screen. Hard to read the date because of the crinkle paint. Sometime late '22. If they do change it, no reason to buy a Titanium anymore. The Endurance would be the 'Top Dog'. That single layer media isn't bad and is perfectly fine for low mile OCI. The thing about Fram that's infuriating is they have more filter 'grades' than you can shake a stick at with one minor change between them sometimes. And then sometimes, like with the Endurance, they mashup all the existing features and come up with something completely 'new'. I think they're trying to capture every possible segment of the filter market with minimal investment. Anyway, I wouldn't buy the Titanium just for the 'inlet holes'. It would be just a minor upgrade from an Ultra and not worth the price. It's OK as is.
