A simple guide to show how to use the Framers Corner PFK04 Hand Operated Frame Making Kit. It shows how to make a professional picture frame without the expense of an underpinner. The kit also includes a range of picture hanging hardware including hooks, screw eyes, screw rings, brass pins, wire, wedges , V nails and D rings.

I have only just started using this item and unfortunately although the wedges were going in perfectly the corners of the wedges were about 2mm away from the actual mitre joint. Called to explain two days ago and received a replacement 'fence' today, put it on and it is now spot on. Love this item. And well done Framers Corner for not forcing me to ask my friend for the receipt for this item. Very highly recommended.

Amrit I am gluing and setting the frames in a band clamp first and then using this to add the wedges for extra strength. If the joints didn't line up to start with then they can't have been cut at a dead 45 degree angle. If you use a good mitre saw to cut the moulding it should work fine. I love mine!

I bought this. The frame clamp left gaps between the joints. The joints never quite managed to join together to begin with.

I use this for framing my own pictures to sell. I manage to produce frames with smart, neat corners, and these have been accepted into some large open exhibitions, so it must do the job. I personally use an ordinary handsaw to roughly take the moulding to the length and angle, and then an Axminster mitre guillotine to slice the corners very smooth and accurately. I then glue and string the frame tightly together, wait a day, and then use this. It takes some time to get used to. I personally don't do the double-stacking, but drill, nail, and fill the corners for larger frames for added strength, as I have found that in some very hot, dry galleries, the corners crack open as the wood shrinks. This tool is ideal for wood such as fsc lime, which is a real joy to use. I use it for fsc ash, beech, and recondition old frames including softwood and ayous, which it is fine with. Obviously, with harder wood, you need more effort. Any moulding with a fairly square or rectangular section to it should be fine on this, but I have trouble with more fancy mouldings that have a curved profile. I'm doing one at the moment with a raised outer edge, but which goes down towards the middle, and to do this kind of moulding you would need a support of some kind, or your joint will be snapped open, as just happened to me... Any tips on managing that kind of moulding would be helpful. For anyone completely new to it, getting the nail dead in the centre of the joint is essential, as is getting the v nail the right way up! I don't use the vice any more, as I find it quicker and easier to do it by eye. If I can sort out issues with curved mouldings, then I will be happy to carry on using this for years and years.

I'd recommend to everyone to use a picture frame vise for glue essembly. it allows you to play with your joint if your miter is a tad off. after its dried and complete I'd go and use this tool to drive v nails.

I've just bought one of these and am really struggling to get tight joins- all mitred properly using a Morso but the joiner seems to been pushing the mitres apart not pulling them in tight- does any one have any suggestions.? I'm using soft wood

I'm a proffesinal artist and have this.its OK but there's a slight amount of shift in the metal bit that holds the v nails and a general bit of shift in the structure.this means it can be difficult to stack the v nails.Its very hard to join harder,deep woods such as ash .You use hardwood v nails for this but the stacking of them is a nightmare as they can slip and poke out of the side of the wood.With perfectly mitreded soft wood ( I use a Logan mitre saw andthen a mitre trimmer with measuring gauge) its OK.

This doesn't work anywhere near as well as this. The v-nails barely go in and the corner of the nail is not level with the join.

I was using a soft wood but you have raised a good point: the sharper edge on the vnail may have well been the problem as I neglected to check, so my own fault. Thank you for your reply.
