I will add, the SF street painting on the floater looks incredible, well all the paintings look incredible but that one has that nighty vibe with the lightning and the purples that pop up the complementaries so well, plus the varnish, I don't know...made me want to have it, it looks perfect. You know your videos are mellow, they have art, surf, food, nice locations and you are a super cool dude. People always tell me to make a channel but I don't know if I have what it takes cause you've set the bar too high. Im not a Chamberlain!

Great use of complementary colors. There are certain painter’s processes that I like watching and you’re one of them. I’ve always wondered about Euan Uglow’s process. Steven Assael has a wild process!

Thanks for your support! This video was also great to go along with making the frames. I am in that exact same place where I am preparing for a show, and need to save the chunk of money to have someone else do these frames. Thanks for the video! )))

I don't know how I haven't seen this video...I love your floaters and the work you put on the presentation of your paintings. But I already told you that before, as well as other many things Im always repeating lol...I'll continue doing it though because your work deserves it and the comments help to the growing of the channel.

Invaluable information on float frames. Regarding your gold frames, simply pull out a tube of brown or (insert appropriate colour here) oil paint you have lying around and brush it onto the gold leaf, then rub off using a rag. Voila, different frames.

Hi Michael. I always watch but don't always comment. Want to wish you luck with your Oct. show. Looks like you have some wonderful paintings to display. Liz and I love your SF city paintings especially. Of course, I love the ocean paintings also. Always makes us homesick for the bay area. Yours frames are perfect for your paintings. I love the pochade boxes you make also. It sure helps to be a talented carpenter along with being a very talented artist.

Hey Michael, I'd have a question about mounting the panels to that wooden support frame. What do you do if the panel is slightly deformed or bend caused by the liquid paint on the one side. Any advise on how to glue that back on a frame to stabilize it without ruining the paint layer?

San Francisco looks like such a lovely city from your artwork and your vlogs. I would love to visit there if I ever go back to America. I actually love the architecture because it reminds me of a mixture of LA and Melbourne, Australia with the terrace houses and the coloured weatherboard! So pretty! I'd also love to visit Studio Gallery because the local art always looks incredible online!

Very informative! Thanks! I love the look of these frames too but there doesn’t seem to be a vast supply up here in Canada. I recently ordered some floaters from a company based in Montreal but they were too shallow for my canvas. The website didn’t specify depth at all! So when I went to Vancouver recently I stopped in at Opus and they have wooden frames. I bought 2 that were supposed to fit a 3/4” canvas.... but they were slightly too shallow so the painting wasn’t flush. I wish I could make my own like you but I am disabled and my husband isn’t that handy, unfortunately 😕 I guess I’ll keep looking because I think buyers like the paintings pre-framed.

With the foam tape, how do you do the lining up on that when dropping the panel in? If it is crooked it is stuck the moment you drop it in.

I set the top of the he panel first. And then lower he bottom in gently. If the spacing around the outside is even, I press down on the panel and set it. If not, I try again.

Such a nice looking frame. When you attach a panel to a cradle, do you need to wait a long time so it's sufficiently dry in order to clamp the panel to the cradle?

Thanks! I glue the cradle to the panel with industrial adhesive (liquid nails) and let it dry overnight before mounting in the frame.

chamberlainpaintings sorry I meant to ask - do you need to let the oil painting dry for weeks/months before attaching the cradle, or can you do it when it is just “touch dry”?

Mike, Do you try to have all your pieces use the same frame face width of 1-1/4"? In this video, your cradle is 3/4". What thickness is the panel? I'm guessing 1/4" roughly. So, with the 3/4 base, 3/4 cradle and 1/4 panel, its 1-3/4 face on the frame which you state in the How to Make Floaters video. Here, you have the panel slightly below the face of the frame. Are you making any adjustments or dimensional variations when you have canvas vs panels? For instance, the 3/4 base plus the 3/4 stretcher is 1-1/2". Would you cut the frame face width of 1-3/4" down or leave the 1/4 difference alone? I'm making floats for watercolors that I mount and have used 1/4 panels and 3/8 panels. Its extra time and effort to make the cradle part for the 1/4 panel of course. As you, I mount loose paintings to the 3/8 panels when I want to float them. I use the mounted paper for plein air since they travel better. One more question if you please: Your poplar lumber looks closer to the color of pine. Is this a different type of poplar? What I can buy has a more greenish cast. Thanks Mike.
@chamberlainpaintings
@chamberlainpaintings 6 ай бұрын
The width varies depending on the thickness of the painting. I try to have the painting recessed about 1/8”. I hand pick the poplar. I avoid the green and gray.
