I always enjoy seeing the variety of chickens and random scenes in the opening. I particularly like the goats, they are always so entertaining. Ned cracked me up with the tool belt and surprised me with how quickly he seemed to get used to it. It didn't take long for him to be strutting around the yard like the boss 🤪 You guys moved right along and got a lot accomplished. It's two bad I don't live closer as I have a large (68" X 48") gas filled double glazed, dual pane, sliding vinyl window that was mismeasured when I replaced all the window in my house, and I"d love to give it to you but there is no easy or affordable way to get it up there to you. It's new and just leaning against the house out back waiting for me to find someone who needs it. I love watching you two working together on your projects. Katie, you have grow so much, need very little guidance or help and are such a good worker. Greg is lucky to have you and you both compliment each other. Looking forward to the next update, have a great week and be safe. Larry, Central Valley, Ca.

Crosses in constructions can be made in several ways. You can make crosses on both sides of the windows. Chipboard or plywood board also acts as wind bracing. You can cover the inside of the gables with boards and cut holes for the windows. You can make wind bracing between the vertical posts. Crosses do not need to go across the entire gable half, crosses between all posts do the same. When you use wood for bracing, they take forces both ways, pressure and tension.

As another option for your wind bracing, old barns had the siding run on a 45° angle that would work for sheer strength. As long as your bottom kick boards are firmly anchored to your concrete posts they would act as a strong contact point. As someone else noted the bracing doesn't need to go from top of post to far bottom of opposite post. The 45° siding would allow you to install your windows where you want them. Just a thought.

We have bought or had too short of boards before too and had to fashion them together like that. It all works, just being efficient with what you have! ! Nebby was having way to much fun today :D Barn addition is looking great! and so true, so many priorities changing all the time, gotta work on what you can when you can! Katie, I wanna be as good on the sawmill as you! #goals - Jen

If you want an opening window but only have a non-opening window just take that window and build a frame around it using 2x3 lumber. Next, slap some decent hinges on the new frame and hinge it to the 2x4 material around it. run a wire to the new window frame and this will prevent it from swinging wind. It would depend on whether you hang it to swing to the side or out and up or down. to know where the wire needs to be attached. Windows and door frames are always built with king AND jack studs. The jack studs help transfer the load of the window opening to the foundation. On another thought, if you run gutters from the lower side of the new shed area and transfer the input thru a skein and into an IBC tote (350 gallons each!! and cheap, just get ones from former food use). This would be a massive and free water supply for the animals. This way you only need to pipe from the tote to the pens. If you raise the tote on a strong platform you can drop the water to the animals with simple gravity feed.

when using a nail gun to build walls shoot the lower nail first, that is the best way to protect your hand. then you can remove your hand and shoot the upper nail. shooting the top nail while holding the board risks shooting your hand if you skip off the board by bad aim, splintered wood or a double bump. I know this first hand because I had this happen to me.

I love that hot tub setup you got there I got an old 15 man hot tub in my backyard that I used to use as a cold cup I sealed up all the holes with fiberglass and then painted it blue and then I had it my son learned how to swim in it because it's up it's 4 feet deep I think it's about 6 foot or 8 foot by 8 foot square Now I got it out there turned upside down and the turkeys use it to roost on it it's pretty heavy I had a hard time moving it I didn't used to move it around no problem not anymore must be an old age but that would be neat to set up that old 15 man hot tub into the wood burning one the only reason I turned it into a cool tub because it would cost too much to heat it I got it from a friend of mine that used to have a hot tub business and that was one that used to tow around on a trailer and rent out I think I gave him $100 for the complete unit it had a heater in the pump with it Pump works good still but the heater don't because it was a plastic heater and I had the heater plugged in one night and it I guess the pump shut off in the heater kind of sucked the walls of the plastic tank in I'm kind of glad it did that because it would have cost me too much money to run it

You can always use a 4x8 sheet of plywood or osb in lou of diagonal bracing or a metal cut in on a steeper angle than 45° or if your siding is horizontal or sheeting you dont need an angle brace..

Hey Greg. it seems that fuel is your Achilles' heel. So I think that you should get for yourself a 50 gallon barrel so that you can stop having to run to town to by fuel because you forgot the you needed some. Then set a reminder alarm on your phone to check how must fuel you still have from time to time.

For windows, are there any salvage stores in the town/city? For the end of the building, you can either make the wall like a tall truss, window in middle. So multiple diagonals. Our run horizontal bracing that matches your bertical studs. If you verticals are 24” on center, then start from the bottom going up every 24” for horizontal studs. It’s like how blocking in floor joist strengthens the floor, and around the window openings, double up on the studs.

Treated wood will eventually rot due to the soil's dampness. Normally add a concrete pad between the soil and the wood. Also burn the wood or tar treat it. But it's a barn. Lots could change over the next 10 yrs.
