From the late-night circuit and an HBO documentary to her essays and speaking engagements, Fran Lebowitz has never shied away from a controversial topic. And in this new video, she takes on tax inequality, dying, and getting rich. Watch the Vanity Fair contributing editor-who has been likened to a modern-day Dorothy Parker for her razor sharp wit-stop by her office to give her altogether original take. Credits: Filmed by Vance Spicer; Interview by Cat Buckley; Lighting by Greg Waszczuk; Audio by William Pierce; Edited by Nikhil Shah and Jeremy Elkin.

What if I get rich some day? The biggest lie ever perpetrated on the working class to get them to vote for their exploiters.

So true. There was a time when working class people understood this but now many of them believe they are simply inconvenienced millionaires. It's all wrapped up in the myth of American exceptionalism.

@Cody Leach literally 100 places I would rather live than the US, but I already bought my one way ticket quit pretending America is actually great it could be if it actually used its insane wealth to support working people like every other country, but in its current state it shouldn't even be considered fully developed healthcare, education, transportation, workers' rights, taxation (every other country taxes are even done for you instead of filing yourself), the electoral system, and more are all way behind the developed world

The problem is that their exploiters control both parties, and they have for decades. Democrats pretend to care about the working class when they campaign, but they suddenly become hamstrung and impotent once elected. We've also seen how establishment Democrats use their minions in the media to attack genuine champions of the poor and working class like a pack of vultures. In the end, even the most well meaning progressives who remain in the Democratic Party usually end up being co-opted by the establishment wing.

Running is definitely good for you, but she is correct about the notion that so many fitness obsessed people don't really enjoy life because they are preoccupied with being "healthy" and maximizing "longevity". Life should be enjoyed. Don't stress over exercise.
@tylerjhunter

It seems to elude her that a lot of people actually enjoy exercising. It feels wonderful to get out on an October morning and go for a jog, breathe in the crisp autumn air, and then for the rest of the day you feel relaxed and alert. It's not at all just about living longer. Fran can't even take an airplane ride without getting uncomfortable because she needs cigarettes to relax. In what universe is this considered a good thing?

Some of my happiest moments in the last 10 years were runing. Like, actual euphoria, made me probably look like an idiot. That said, it can be a miserable slog sonetimes too. Not just tiring and unpleasant, but getting a serious knee injury during a race was awful. If that's all it was, of course I would be in Fran's camp lol.

Disagree completely - having done exercise is a key component of what allows you to have a better chance of surviving a heart attack and reducing the chances of you suffering with the complications of diabetes. Life wont be "enjoyed" if youre alive until age 90, but the last 30 years of them are you living everyday with a poor heart due to how you lived your life in your middle years.

Well, but it is also absurd to have a federal income tax for rich people that is about 50%. There are safe made rich people, who worked their behinds off to get where they are. Besides, 20% of 50k is not the same as 20% of 200k a year. Out of whos tax payment do you buy i.e. more hospital equipment for children? Make it 15 and 25%, everybody can live with that. But 10% and 50% would just be nuts. And it drives me crazy when people say rich people pay the same as poor people, they do not

@Scriptease123
@Scriptease123 3 жыл бұрын
She may have been talking about Social Security taxes, which in 2015 would have only applied to the first $100 or so of wages. The essence of what she's saying isn't wrong though. They top income tax bracket has been somewhere just above $400K for a while now, and a single person making $400Kish will pay the same top marginal rate as someone who makes $10 Million or $100 Million.
@Tomhhh5535
@Tomhhh5535 3 жыл бұрын
@@Scriptease123 She was referring to brackets with have nothing to do with SS payroll tax, but even if she was, neither of you would be correct. SS tax is 6.2% of wages up to 142k, and employers also kick in another 6.2% to bring it to 12.4%. As far as the brackets go, anyone who wants to make it seem like the world isnt fair quotes taxes in percentages. But here's the math for you: Someone who makes 400k pays about 112k in taxes, $10mill income and you pay $3.7million in taxes, and $400mill income gets you $148 MILLION in taxes. The people making disproportionate income pay a disproportionate amount of taxes for the whole country. how is that not fair? Oh ya, if you make 30k in income your taxes are about $1900 (6.5% of total income). That's how it should be and that is why the tax system isnt as unfair as everyone in these comments seems to think.

No one is under the illusion that running will make one immortal. People do it because exercise makes them feel good, makes them healthier, and in fact does extend their lifespan a little. I know what she’s saying: wealthy people nowadays are trying all sorts of means to accumulate as much wealth as possible and will subscribe to any sort of health regimen to postpone death for as long as possible. Even if her comment is a side-dig at the relatively new culture of exercise and health (new since the 70s) it still reflects her desire for effeteness that comes through in her other interviews: she’d rather live the type of life the wealthy did before the advent of health and wellness consciousness. Because it takes less effort and we all die anyway.
