French Navy Rear Admiral Yannick Bossu handed over command of Standing NATO Maritime Group Two (SNMG2) to the Royal Canadian Navy Commodore Matthew Coates on 1 July, during a ceremony on board the flagship FS Somme.
=====================
NATO Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM) Deputy Commander, French Navy Vice Admiral Didier Maleterre, presided over the change of command ceremony.
This was the first time France has commanded SNMG2, although French ships have often served in NATO Standing Naval Forces, demonstrating France’s commitment to the Defense of Alliance vital interests.
The handover marked the end of a three-month deployment for SNMG2 during volatile times, with the war in Ukraine, rising tensions in the Middle East and the Houthi crisis in the Red Sea. From 5 April to 1 July, the Task Group carried out its mission in the Eastern and Central Mediterranean Sea.
SNMG2 is one of four Standing Naval Forces that operate under NATO Allied Maritime Command, headquartered in Northwood, United Kingdom. SNMG2 is a multinational integrated task group that projects a constant and visible reminder of the Alliance's solidarity and cohesion afloat. This continuous maritime capability performs a wide range of tasks, including exercises and real-world operations in periods of crisis and conflict.

The WWII RCN was an extraordinary achievement, and no question was essential to the Allied war effort. But what purpose would be served by maintaining a large war fleet? It would impoverish the country. We could not man the ships without conscription. And what exactly would this fleet do? Unlike America, Canada has no Empire

Cool. Our Naval commander gets to spend time on Naval Ships that actually work. Canada's specialize in hanging around the repair shop. The recruiting motto of our navy for decades was "Join the Navy. Take turns sailing our ship." Now we're - finally - building a few ships. The subs (bought from UK) are still mostly MIA. We have the longest shoreline IN THE WORLD, and a few ships to patrol them. No way could we defend them. We have a warming climate that'll encourage use of the NW Passage. Russia, China & USA especially want to send ships through our Arctic: a ridiculously dangerous shipping route (if it becomes that) as there'll be no way to rescue shipwrecks & deal with cleanups if there's an oil spill in what is an incredibly environmentally sensitive area. We can't stop them with Inuit in kayaks carrying rifles! Flagship for the NATO fleet will be HMCS Charlottetown. Pathetic, but it's what we have. With luck it'll be able to keep up with the fleet it's supposedly leading. THEY'LL all have to cut speed to "keep up" with it. Fortunately there'll be lots of bigger ships being "led" with repair crews & parts so it'll be safe on Atlantic crossings.

James, you know not of what you speak, talk to real sailors who have been sailing on NATO deployments since the early 1950s. We have excellent sailors that know how to keep their kit ship shape and we do have good kit. It is the traditional Canadian defeatist attitude that thinks Canada is a lightweight at sea. 12 new destroyers on the books and 12 new ice capable submarines were just announced plus the new P8 Poseidon Long Range Patrol Planes and the CH148 Cyclone helicopters serving at sea. Sign up laddy buck and see for yourself. Says the Chief!

I’m inclined to agree with you. But HMCS Montreal made the news recently as it sailed through the South China Sea with an American ship to protect it!! 😂 The RCN can, at best, sortie 4 of these frigates from the 1990s out of 12. They don’t have the personnel and although nobody will admit it, some of these 12 Halifax-class ships are being canabalized for parts. Plus, nobody wants to join a Navy that has no hope. Their BS announcement of procuring 15 new ships (Canadian Surface Combatants) and recently « cutting steel » has to be viewed with the knowledge that it will take until 2030 or so to finish the first ship…and twenty+ years to deliver them all. That is absolutely pathetic and will lead to the program being out of touch with the changing seascape of war at sea. Canada has no other surface combatants. It is criminal what Liberal governments have done to the Canadian Armed Forces over the past five decades. 😢 Trudeau deserves life imprisonment for treason as well as violating human rights and the Canadian constitution. 😮

The Canadian navy did a great job during WWII . Look up Harry George DeWolf . There was a movie about him. As for YF23, I figure that it will be costly to develop and to maintain, and there will be a lack of missions for potential Canadian YF23 air superiority before 2020 . The tech in YF23 are probably outdated if you consider that US air force did consider retiring F22 due to high maintenance ( they almost did retiring F22 but changed their mind to upgrade). Perhaps workhorses such as F15-EX and F18-E are better choices for Canada .

@@MrGarrychTruth be known the Americans don't want or expect Canada to be a big military force. They prefer Canada to help with peace keeping around the world and go where its needed. like it always has. Although with the changing environment in Washington Canada could be at risk from the North. Basically with two strong men on each side. No doubt a change of government in Canada to the right would sell out Canada and its citizens would pay the price.

@@michaelb9529- Do you actually think these ships are of any use? They are not capable of Arctic excursions, except in the summer (lowest class of ice-breaker possible!!). They has no anti-submarine warfare capabilities. They have no sensors except for navigational radars. They cannot defend themselves from the air either. They are only armed with one Bushmaster 25mm auto cannon. They are big juicy targets, but since they are no combatants, they would barely merit the cost of a missile to disable them. They are a waste of taxpayers’ money. It was a jobs program. Two of the eight ships will be given to the Canadian Coast Guard (minus the Bushmaster). Even the CCG doesn’t want these lemons. Canada is sooooooo unprepared for this century’s warfare challenges that its woke military should be completely rethought through…or disbanded. It is next to useless…

If you can’t contribute at least a Cruiser, leadership should be left to a Nation with a real Navy. The Halifax class barely can’t sail. @@jbqu3142 I coulda sworn that the last time I flew on Air Canada, half the safety stuff was in French. And high school French +1 week of extra training can probably cover 95% of what you'd need to speak as a flight attendant. And you say there is no service in French in 99.9% of Canada. So not a single spec of English Canada, or bilingual NB, or like 99.5% of Quebec has any services in French? You'd think you could get served in French in Quebec, since they're the ones that get uppity about the whole language thing. But apparently that's not true? But apparently in the Canadian province of Quebec, basically nobody uses French. So if you walk into, I don't know, a PFK, in Trois-Rivieres & ask for a 'dix morceaux de poulet' they will look at you funny and tell you to speak English if you want to be served? Sounds like the language problem isn't actually a problem since approximately everyone gets by just fine on English alone. May as well just dump the 2nd official language and save a whole lot of time & money with the duplication of everything into French.
