“Provided Mr. Starmer doesn't screw things up, after all the business of Brexit, Britain is now looking a bit like an island of stability.”
The results of the French election is “probably quite good news for Britain”, says Times Radio’s Andrew Neil. Nina Dos Santos explains what’s next for France after the National Rally’s surge.

Not surprising at all - one of the main reasons I voted leave. subversion of parliaments, EU corruption which media ignores etc etc not that I think our brand of socialism is any good.

Even more ironically, many on the Left love everything EU because they think that they're left leaning and isee it as a way of getting Socialism through the back door to thwart a Tory voting British public. Bow, justas a Labour government comes in, Keir Starmer will be keen to join an EU that is swinging to the Right.

If you were to look at the whole period the UK was in the EEC/EU, I'd say the left was a more longstanding opponent of our membership than the right. Tony Benn devoted pretty much his whole life to opposing it. The 1983 Labour Manifesto included a pledge to leave without a referendum.

@@DY-cq3qd You are sure your reason for leaving wasn't immigration? What socialism in the UK? The tories have been in power in the UK for 14 years! Did you not pay attention to tory corruption during covid? Billions and billions into the pockets of tory mates. Your voting leave, by the way, has totally disenfranchised me. As a British citizen living in France I have no vote in France, as a Briton not resident in the UK I have no vote in the UK. That, among many many other things, which I could explain to you, has made my life worse and is your responsibility.

The UK has generally been quite a stable society for the past few hundred years. Yes we had the English civil war and some turbulence with the English parliament. On the whole we seem to just keep calm and carry on. I was a bit gutted when we had brexit but we really never had a government that would stand up to Europe when they started playing silly buggers at the airports. The only reason why we deviate between centre left and right is because of first past the post. I'm no fan of any of the extremes, particularly the right given its obsession with "national identity" and who is and who isn't a true citizen, BUT if we had proportional representation, there is no doubt Reform would carry a significant number of Parliamentary seats. Not enough to form a government of course, but its folly to think the UK is "stable" because we swing from Conservatives to Labour, each of whom present basically the same platform with some tweaks. In any event, the one benefit of first past the post is that it forces both main parties to be broad churches and- in theory- make internal compromises, rather than a system that would have the more extreme and possibly dangerous elements outside. But lets not be complacent and think there are not many people out there who are supportive of more extreme positions.
