As we watched this, we were enjoying two glasses of 2018 French Gouleyant Malbec by Georges Vigouroux from Cahors. Le Gouleyant is French for “easy to drink”. A simple and tasty 100% Malbec wine from the birthplace of Malbec. The funny thing was that this French Malbec much more resembled, both in taste and profile, the darker Argentinian Malbec you were trying, so entire time I was calling them wrong! With an intense darker color, the nose reveals aromas of black fruits, cherries, spices, and just a slight note of licorice. After a bit of time to open up in the decanter, tasting reveals a soft and smooth wine that is a bit tannic with plenty of dark fruits and just a little bit of earthiness underneath. It’s a lovely and quite enjoyable wine. À votre santé! (Cheers!)

what a coincidence! I recently had a chateau de mercues malbec by the same producer and it blew me away! so many flavors in one glass, especially that hit of licorice! Fun to see a total stranger from a year-old comment have such similar notes! In the oooold days, just recognition/repetition in flavors was what really made a wine considered Good. Looks like they still hold true to that over in Cahors. Or we happened to have the exact same vintage lol.

There's a variety of Malbec based wines coming out of Mendoza. Depending on where the vineyard is located (Agrello or Valle de Uco, for example), one gets to taste different Malbec wines. And depending on the quality of the Malbec grapes and their brix one can get different classes of Malbec wines. To try and compare some of them I recommend having a taste of Penedo Borges Parcela Malbec (from Alto Agrello) and Finca la Celia Elite (from Valle de Uco). Both of these wines are on the same "crianza" level.

I will drink other wines, but Malbec is the only red that I buy for myself, and only ever Argentinian. Simply haven't tried the French stuff, but didn't France lose all their Malbec grapes several years ago to disease and have to re-import a load from Argentina?

If you like "New World" wines, you'll like Malbec, because virtually everyone likes Malbec. Try to bump up into the upper teens to low $20s if you have to. If you like "old world" wines, then you might be able to like the Malbec from Cahors. It is quite an adjustment from Malbec argentino. Para mí, el vino tinto de Cahors es mierda, pero bueno.

Tannins are complicated. I definitely taste some of them (although, I'm not sure if it's the polyphenols or flavs): some are bitter, like the bitterness in coffee. I suspect that it's the polyphenols that are more astringent (like the texture of sandpaper on the tongue), although I'm not entirely sure. Great question btw. Gold star!

Totally agree with daver8521. Cahors is a more elegant wine form me than the rough Argetinian versions. I prefer less tannin and average alcohol. New world wine is explosive but comes across as rough or too rich for my taste. I think savory Crepe vs Taco for me, I'd prefer eating the taco for its fuller flavor profile but prefer enjoying old world subtle wines and looking for its flavors that getting smashed in the mouth by strong wine flavors.

oh no! cured meat will totally wreck your palate. it will just coat it with meat juice. I actually try to keep my palate really clear when tasting wine. Just had my first Argentinian malbec (Mascota Unanime) after being haunted by a delicious and complicated French one I had a few months ago (Chateau de Mercues). It's so cool how different they are but both so tasty. From my very limited experience so far, it feels like Argentinian malbec is very friendly and gets along well with food while the French is like an eccentric artist demanding all the attention. Malbec in it’s hey day (before Governor Domingo bought some to plant in Argentina or it’s introduction in Chile) was one of Frances most popular grapes. It was actually a favorite varietal of Russian Tsars and the French Aristocracy. But because Malbec is very temperamental and a wave of phylloxera swept through Europe, most French winemakers did not replant Malbec.

I bet it will stay great for 10 years. The only thing I wonder about Malbec is that short finish and how it will taste with more tertiary (aged) flavors. I've had a pretty high quality malbec aged 12 years that was fantastic, so it's definitely possible. Look into the alcohol level and pH of this Cahors wine. If it's got a relatively low pH (e.g. high acidity) it will age longer :)

The Malbecs from Cahors are much thinner. MUCH. Much more inline with Old World Wines. (Remember that Malbec is one of the 5 grape varietals that can be included in a Bordeaux... though it was usually only used in very small quantities and specifically for it's color - like ink - than for what it adds to the palate.) The Malbecs from Argentina a much dark, have higher alcohol, and more viscous. A richer mouth feel. Cahors = body of light beer or Czech pilsner Argentina = body of an ale or German lager

@@numanuma20- I can't think of one, I just know that it is one of the 5 grapes that is allowed to be used in a wine and still have that wine be called a Bordeaux. I believe that it is rarely used anymore and when it is, it's just because there was less sun and the color extracted from the skins of the primary fruit was so pale that the wine makers felt that it needed something to darken the color. It's basically natural food coloring when used in Bordeaux blends. There is now some single grape production out of the Cahors region, but even some of those wines have taken some tips from Argentine production in order to make the old world vino better* than it traditional was. *"Better" is my opinion. "More popular", "more drinkable",... there are different ways to say "People like it better and will pay enough for it to make it worth producing."

@@chancemiller9340 Sorry for the late reply. Warning ⚠️ long comment I learned about Cahors from WSET level 3 and you’re spot on. Having tried the Clos La Coutale Cahors , Château Haut-Monplaisir Cahors Tradition and the Crocus L'Atelier Malbec de Cahors, they where completely different from the Catena Lunlunta Malbec 2018 and the Alamos Malbec 2020. Don’t remember much about the Clos La Cotale. Château Haut-Monplaisir Cahors Tradition is made and raised in concrete vessels with 30% raises in natural barrels from the winemaker notes say. Great display of the terroir and the grape that needs to age for a while as it has astronomically high grippy tannins. The Crocus L’Atelier Malbec de Cahors is a fantastic Cahors that is a collaboration with Paul Hobbs and Bertrand Gabriel Vigouroux. Crocus and is a fantastic wine that drinks well now and could possibly age for a while. Then I compared them to the Alamos Malbec for my Argentinian wine tasting, I drank the Catena Lunlunta Malbec 2018 before I did the actual tasting, along with the Ankos Torrontes. I intentionally was looking for a cheep Malbec to replace the Catena and for $8.99, I was glad I purchased the Alamos Malbec. It gave me a clear understanding of why Argentinian Malbec is heavily imported to the USA. The aroma intensity was medium and showed blackberry, strawberry, smoke vanilla, violet, lavender, fennel and blueberry but the fruit was a little muted on the noise making it youthful . Tasted off dry, maybe from tasting jammy, high acidity, medium + tannins, medium alcohol, medium flavor intensity medium, flavors of blackberry, strawberry, smoke, vanilla, violet, lavender, fennel, blueberry, and red cherry which I did not get on the noise. Finish, I have a hard time judging was medium +.

Some time ago you made a video about French Malbec and Argentine Malbec, but all with a cut of another strain, maybe you didn't choose one of the Malbec / Malbec strain, like a blend of Malbec of different heights as there are, and very good, no I'm an extreme fan of Malbec, because when the wine is good, all the strains are rich, I have preferences, like the Cabernet Franc that has been produced in Argentina in recent years, also Malbec / Malbec and Malbec / Cabernet Franc (exquisite)

I love the grass, barnyard, and other intense and complex earthy, herbal, and floral notes in Cahors malbecs, but they're crazy and wild wines IMO. Mendoza malbecs are elegant and rich, with their deep fruits and chocolates, but they're not as interesting. I don't know that I fully grasp the concept of terroir as the French understand it, but this is a wine that demonstrates its extremes, I think. A Chateau Eugenie literally changed the whole way I think about wine a few years ago.

@@Winefolly- I don't think that the French produce much wine, so it might be difficult to find some of their fermented juice in your neck of the woods.

Hey there, I really liked your review.. I must say though, I find it a bit unfair to compare a 100% French Malbec with a Malbec Blend from Argentina. There are plenty of very good 100% Malbec in the southern country, e.g. Lorca Poético.

None of the two wines are pure malbecs, they're blends. Info no know about French wines but that argentine wine is mid/low quality. I would like to see s review of a higher end argentine malbec like a Viña Cobos Chañares

Malbec is an underappreciated wine, and in my estimation, the Argentinians do a better job.. You can get a very good Argentinian Malbec for $25 not the case with the French counterpart.
